Q27
08 Oct 2003
From: Linda Lou
Subject: Looking for Parents of Lavinia Ann"Hannah" Butler

Hannah Butler was my great grandmother and her parents were Benjamin J Butler - born 01/11/1829 and Mary Elizabeth Mcginnes born 12/08/1825. I believe they came from the Blue Mountain area - I have seen a picture of Hannah as she was known - she is of very dark complexion, wondered if from Indian stock. Hannah married Jonathon Elijah Walsh in 06/09 /1880.

My grandmother Jennifer Elizabeth "Jennie" Walsh married James Messom(born abt 1895) James Messom is the mistery- I cannot trace his family back further than him, he either came from Blue Mountain or Gaspereau, he worked and lived in Gaspereau most of his life but before that - is a big question. If anyone can help me out with that one as well that would be great.

Q28
16 Oct 2003
From: Susan Hintz
Subject: Hodges look-up

I am trying to track Hodges ancestors in Nova Scotia, specifically Jonathan Hodges (nickname Sampson) b 1838, Aylesford, d 1875 in Middleborough MA, but buried in Morristown NS. His wife was Henrietta Vroom b abt 1846, d/o John Ditmars Vroom b 1811 and Catherine Jones b 1809, both of Clements, Annapolis, NS. Jonathan's siblings include Rebecca Hodges m William McKeown, Sylvanus Boardman Hodges m Eliza Martin, and Louise Hodges m John Banks.

Parents are believed to be Jonathan Hodges and Ruth ____, both b about 1800. They may have been part of the Massachusetts to NS migration, but I haven't been able to make that link yet. Any help would be appreciated.

It appears that there is also a Jonathan C. Hodges who m. Rachel, and had a son named Jonathan C, both families in the same area, same time, same ages, and this is adding to my confusion.

I see that you are looking for volunteers to do look-ups - unfortunately, I don't have access to any books or original records for the NS area, although I have two town Diamond Jubilee books from Elgin and New Liepzig, North Dakota, which have short biographies of settlers there, starting in the 1880's.

Q30
25 Oct 2003
From: Lilly K
Subject: (Mary?) Catherine Gesner born about 1849

I'm trying to find the origin of my great-great grandmother, (Mary?) Catherine GESNER, who was born about 1849 in Canada. I'm guessing she was part of the Gesner family of Nova Scotia, mostly because it was so large (and because she was, most definitely, "City People.").

She appeared in Minneapolis in 1871, where she married my great-great-grandfather, Peter Jungblut/Youngblood, a butcher from Germany. I think this might have been an elopement since they are no where to be found in 1870, and she never seems to have had family in Minnesota. I think he first immigrated to Canada, worked his trade for a bit, and they moved on together.....

Does anyone have a Mary, Catherine or Kate Gesner in their notes, born about 1849, and perhaps disappearing about 1871? Any information would be appreciated.
