CUMBERLAND COUNTY DIRECTORY

CUMBERLAND

This county is rich in varied resources. The alluvial lands around the head of the Bay of Fundy, and along the courses of the various rivers, are of great extent and extraordinary fertility. The interior of the county is well wooded, and numerous sawmills yearly manufacture large amounts of lumber for market. Coal mines are in operation at the Joggins and River Hebert, and besides these, extensive deposits of coal exist at Spring Hill and elsewhere. Valuable quarries of grindstone are worked at Minudie, and of freestone for building purposes at Wallace River. Shipbuilding is carried on extensively at Parrsborough, Pugwash and Wallace, and other places. A Newspaper has recently been established at Amherst, the shire town. The population of the county amounted to nearly 20,000 in 1861.
