1896 Jeremiah Brooks

Freeport news Mr. Jeremiah BROOKS , one of our oldest inhabitants died Monday after a short illness.He was in his 89th. year and until within one week had been remarkably active and vigorous for a man of his years. During the past summer and fall he frequently took his boat and rowed out into the Bay and fished as a pastime. Mr. BROOKS was born at Weymouth and came to Freeport 58 years ago and in his younger days was a master ship builder and caulker. In the sixties and earlier he built upwards of twenty vessels at his yard in Freeport, the largest a brig of over 300 tons. He married Miss GRANT of Weymouth who died about six years ago in the 79th. year of her age.They reared a family of seven sons and three daughters, nine of whom lived to grow up. Four sons followed the sea , and died or were drowned away. Two, Charles and William , reside here and two daughters Mrs Benjamin THURBER and Mrs RING alone survive Mr. B. united with the Baptist Church over 40 years ago in one of the historic revivals of those days .In politics he was always a staunch Liberal and years ago was almost the only standard bearer of that party.

1897 Charlton Prime

Freeport news Death occured here last week to Mr. Charlton PRIME of New Tusket , Digby Co. Mr PRIME came here last fall to spend a few months with his daughters Mrs Edgar WHITNECK and Mrs Thomas PERRY and enjoyed good health until about ten days ago when he was strickened with paralysis from which he died Thursday the 11th inst. The deceased was one of first born of New Tusket , his father having been one of if not the earliest settler in that part of Digby County.His wife was the daughter of the late Samuel RING of Freeport and died about twenty years ago.Mr. PRIME leaves two brothers George of New Tusket and William H. PRIME of Weymouth ; also one son and four daughters. He was a man of quiet , peaceful nature , respected and beloved for his kind and generous disposition and deep piety. The burial took place in the Freeport Cemetry Saturday morning. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. L. J. TINGLEY

FORMER DIGBY BOY DEAD The death of Mr. F. Bert SAUNDERS occured Monday evening at the residence of his father Rev. J. H. SAUNDERS at Yarmouth. The deceased had not been in good health for some time ,but he was able to be about until a week ago, when he grew worse , and passed away as above stated.He was a young man of excellent attainments , was of a kindly disposition and leaves a host of friends,who will hear of his decease with sorrow.For some time he was assistant business manager of the Messenger and Visitor , St.John, and latterly was on the staff of the Yarmouth Daily News. In Digby he was well known ,having spent several of his early years here . He was thirty years old

DEATH OF MRS HENDERSON After a long and tedious illness, combined with the weakness of age , Mrs Mary HENDERSON ,relict of the late George HENDERSON , passed away on Tuesday morning. The deceased was a lady of wide aquaintance and estimable qualities.She was a native of Annapolis County and with her husband came to Digby when the town was in comparative infancy.Mr. HENDERSON was for many years enaged in a profitable mercantile business,and his wife was also the proprietor of a millinery establishment.Mrs HENDERSON was left a widow in 1880. Her health had failed her of late and the end was long expected,though the best of care was excised. The deceased wasa consistent and devoted member of the Methodist church and the funeral yesterday afternoon was conducted under the uspices of that church. A large number of relatives in Digby and Annapolis counties are left in beheavement .The deceased was 76 years old. same Courier Mr. Robert HARDWICK and Miss HARDWICK of Annapolis were in Digby Thursday to attend the funeral of their aunt Mrs HENDERSON

Llewellyn PERRY Word was received last week that Llewelyn PERRY, son of Mr. and Mrs James PERRY had been lost at sea. on Aug.11. He had been employed on a steamer from New York and Autwerp and was washed overboard while assisting at the wheel during a heavy storm .General sympathy to the beheaved family in their deep afficition. The deceased was in his 22nd year and was a young man of good character and always well liked and respected for his manly ways and upright life.

DEATH OF MR JOHN WOODMAN We regret to record this week the death of another of our fellow citizens, Mr. John C. WOODMAN , which occured on Tuesday. Mr. WOODMAN , it will be remembered was very ill last winter and was at one time at the point of death. He recovered , but only partically and never regained his wonted activity. Gradually becoming weaker , he passed away this week , after along and tedious sickness, a victim of consumption. The deceased had been for many years a familar figure around town. He was a native of New Brunswick and moved here , engaging in the carpentering trade. He was a widower, and was sixty-five years of age.Mr. Clarence WOODMAN of the Digby Paint and Wall Paper Co. is a son. another son , Arthur now resident in New Hampshire , is attending the last sad rites , the funeral taking place yesterday afternoon from the Baptist Church and conducted by Rev. Mr. THOMAS

1898 Benjamin Ruggles

BENJAMIN RUGGLES ESQ. PASSES AWAY By the death on Monday last of Mr. Benjamin RUGGLES, of Westport, Digby County loses one of its oldest and best-known residents. A member of one of the best families in the country and himself a man who figured prominently in the past life of the communtity , he was one of those of whom it may truly be said that his death leaves a vacancy which his fellow citizens will feel.Mr. RUGGLES had been remarkably active for one of his years , having arrived at the milestone of eighty and seven , but an attack of heart trouble resulted fatally Monday morning. The deceased was a son of Thomas RUGGLES , who was the grandson of Brigadier -General Timothy RUGGLES , the most prominent man , perhaps of his time in this country.The General served faithfully during the American wars and in reward for his services in 1784 , was granted ten thousand acres of Loyalist land in the eastern part of Annapolis County where he settled and ended his days. His grand son Thomas HUTCHISON was born before they left Massachusetts and Benjamin the subject of our sketch was the fifth of the RUGGLES name who was born in Nova Scotia. January 9, 1811 was the date of his birth , one hundred years after the General. He was born in Digby , where his father owned the place now occupied by Mr. LONGSTAFF. Early in life he removed to Westport. Mr. RUGGLES was a man of extensive business connection. One of his first ventures was a clerkship with Mr. Charles JONES , father of our townsman Dr. J.E. JONES with whom he was afterward associated in business as a general merchant. If we mistake not , he was the first customs officer for the port of Westport , some fifty years ago , a position which he continued to hold until within ten years.He also post-master and Justice of the Peace . Of late he had not given personal attention to his business, his son , R. W. RUGGLES , being his assistant ;but his form ,showing marks of respected age , has been a familar one on the Westport streets and his fellow -citizens will bear testimony to the important part he acted in the civil , social and commerical life of the place. Seven sons and two daughters survive , all of whom reside at Westport with the exception of four sons . Mrs RUGGLES died some years ago. The funeral will not be held until tomorrow , to permit of the arrival of the absent sons. Rev. J.W. BOLTON of the Disciples church will conduct the services.

She was twenty-eight years of age and leaves one child to mourn the loss of a mother . Mrs MORRELL was a person much esteemed among her acquaintances and her early death will be greatly regretted

HENRY GILPIN We regret to announce that Mrs Gilpin's youngest son ,Henry whose illness we noted last week,died on Tuesday at Wolfville.He had been suffering from a complication of ailments , though it was thought that he was recovering. The body was brought to Digby by train yesterday and the funeral was held on the arrival of the train , from the holy Trinity Church.The deceased was fourteen years of age and a lad of much promise.We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family.

JAMES E. COSSETT Mr. James E. COSSETT died at Smith's Cove , Wednesday night after a two-weeks illness. He was well advanced in age, having reached 71 years.He was a farmer and a man of industry and thrifty habit,He was well known in his community as a citizen of the good , reliable kind and in church circles was a valued member of the Baptist flock. He leaves a wife but no children.

1898 James Haines

MR JAMES HAINES After a few days illness, arising from an attack of pneumonia, Mr. James HAINES, one of Freeport's most-respected citizens , passed away,on Sunday morning. The deceased was the grandson of the HAINES who was the first settler on Long Island, and had attained to the good round age of 78 years.During all these years he had proved himself a man of stirling worth and public spirit and it will be felt that one of Freeport's landmarks has gone. He leaves three sons and one daughter and a brother Nicholas. Capt. Isreal HAINES , the well known pilot with Yarmouth S. S.Co. is a son and the others reside in Freeport. The Funeral was held Tuesday.

Digby Courier 14 Oct. 1898 DIED At BANGOR Word was received yesterday morning of the death of Miss Annie GAUDET , of Havelock, Digby County , who for several years has resided in Bangor, ME and who died at the latter place on Sunday the 9th inst. She leaves a Father aged 90 years , three sisters and other relatives and friends at her old home to mourn their loss besides many friends in Maine.

Digby courier 21 Oct. 1898 DEATH OF MRS SABINE SAVARY At Plympton, Digby County on Sunday morning after an illness of four days, Olivia MARSHALL relict of Sabine SAVARY aged 97 years, 6 months and five days passed to her rest.She was the mother of four children , an only son Judge A.W. SAVARYof Annapolis and three daughters Mrs R.P. MCGIVERN of Saint John NB;Mrs James R.GARDEN formerly of Fredericton ,now residing at Plympton and Miss Savary of Plympton. Her grandson , Rev. A. GARDEN of Texas USA was on a visit to her and his parents at the time of her death. She was the daughter of Samuel MARSHALL ,a loyalist , who was MPP for Yarmouth from 1811-1813 and one of the firsy two Church Wardens in Trinity Church in that town. She was born April 11, 1801 and ws married Nov. 21 1821 , when she removed to the place where she died. She was looked up to by her fiends and acquaintances as a womanof unusual power of mind and excised in her younger days a strong social influence. Intensely devoted to the avancement and interests of her family ,she will be long remembered by an affectionate posterity , and by the older members of the community in which in days long gone by she played so active and useful part. She brought up her children in her father's faith to which her descendents all adhere.She had two brothers of whom Charles in early youth went to Upper Canada and left descendents there and in Michigan.and William settled in Texas where his children are now members of her grandson's congregation. Besides her four children she left surviving ,eight grandpchildren and nine great grandchildren . Three grand children and six great grand children passed brfore her into the better country. The funeral will take place today at 10o'clock from her residence.After the ordinary service in the church at Barton, her remains will be taken to the Church of England Cemetery , Digby and interred beside those of her late husband.

1898 Mrs George Purdy

Mrs George PURDY ,widow of the late Geo. A. PURDY died at her residence on the evening of Wed. the 12th. having survived her husband a little less than a week. Mrs PURDY had been in ill for some time with cancer which caused her death.She was the same age as her husband 78 and after a married life of over half a century their death within a week seems quite a concidence.

1898 George A. Purdy

DEATH OF GEORGE PURDY ESQ. [telephone] By the death of Geo. A. Purdy , Esq. , which occured at his home on the evening of the 6th. Bear River loses another aged and respected citizen. Mr. PURDY was the son of the late Samuel PURDY of Deep Brook , and was born in 1820.He was thus 78 years of age and for the past year has been in very feeble health. His sudden death did not greatly surprise his friends. He came first to Bear River when he was 16 years of age and with the exception of his early manhood when he resided near Annapolis, he spent his life here and taken a prominent part in the public affairs of the village , being one of the J.P.'s of Digby Co. He was married in 1844 to Miss HARRIS who survives him and by whom he had nine children , four of the sons Councillor C. H. PURDY,Messrs James H. and John A. PURDY and Capt. George PURDY are among Bear River's most respected residents. Another son, Capt. Norman PURDY is absent at sea. Two daughters are living , Mrs S. M. WALSH of Boston , and Miss Alma PURDY of Bear River. One brother Mr. Cereno PURDY of Deep Brook still survives. The funeral took place from his residence Sunday afternoon.

1899 Capt. Crawford Daley

DEATH OF CAPT. DALEY We have to chroncile this week the death of Capt. Crawford DALEY of Culloden who passed away on Wed. Jan. 25 after a long illness. Capt. DALEY was born in 1834 and had therefore reached the age of 65. In former years he commanded small vessels out of St. Mary's Bay but later carried on a farming business at Culloden. Three sons and five daughters , three sisters and two brothers and a large circle of relatives and friends are left to mourn their loss. The funeral took place on Friday and was largely attended . The remains were interred in the cemetery at Broad Cove and the funeral service was preformed by Rev. B.H. THOMAS , assisted by Rev. Mr. DURKEE. In the announcements -DALEY----Died at Culloden on the 25th. of Jan. Capt. Crawford Daley age 65.

1899 Mrs R. J. Uniacke

DEATH OF MRS R.J. UNIACKE Annapolis Jan. 31 The community here was greatly shocked this morning when they learned of the sudden death of Mrs UNIACKE , wife of R. J, UNIACKE prothonotory of the supreme court and clerk of the town council, which sad event occured at an early hour this morning from inflamation . Deceased was taken ill only yesterday and not with standing the best medical aid and everything that could be done for her by her friends she lingered in paroxysms of pain till four o'clock this morning when death released her from her sufferings. She was a most estimable lady and highly respected in the community in which she lived and her sudden demise will be regretted by a large circle of friends. Mrs UNIACKE was about 60 years of age and a daughterof the late James HARDWICK . A husband and two sisters survive her, to whom the sympathy of all go out in their sudden bereavemant

1899 Sterns Jones

DEATH OF STERNS JONES AN OLD AND RESPECTED RESIDENT OF WEYMOUTH PASSES AWAY The death of Sterns JONES occured at Weymouth on Tuesday .Although hourly expected , yet the sad news was received with a shock ,and has cast a gloom over the entire community . He was 85 years old. Mr. JONES was born in Weymouth April 15 1814 and was the son of the late Cerno U. JONES who was one of the Loyalists who first settled in Weymouth. He was married Dec. 22nd . 1830 to Margaret Ann, daughter of Isaac Wiley DOANE of St. John NB. One daughter and two sons were the family ,viz.,Mrs Charles BURRILL, of Weymouth; Forbes JONES, deputy customs collector of Weymouth and Frank W. JONES of New York. The deceased bore an unblemished character through life . He was one of the charter members of the Old Columbia division ,no.24 , the first Temperance organization formed in Weymouth and always held sacred and lived up the obligation taken in his youth. He was a member of the Anglican church. The wife of Mr. JONES died April 24th. 1885 .In the year of 1887 he was married again to Mrs FREEMAN nee Miss Annie Sowley MILDON daughter of Thomas MILDON of Weymouth.In 1851 he was gazetted justice of the peace for Digby county.Twelve years later he was appointed collector of customs for Weymouth . After filling this position satisfactory for 19 years he was super-annuated in 1882 . Since then he has been living a quiet life until his death. His successor was Norman Bond JONES who is still in office. The deceased was a liberal in politics and was a great admirer of Joseph HOWE in his time.

1899 Mrs Stephen Payson

Another aged and highly esteemed resident of Weymouth passed away at the ripe old age of 82 years.Mrs Stephen PAYSON , who died at the residence of her sister Mrs RUGGLES of Deep Brook , Annapolis County , Monday morning Jan. 30. The remains were brought to Weymouth and interred in the Episcopal Cemetery on Thursday . The funeral services took place in St. Thomas'Church in the afternoon and was largely attended by a number of relatives and friends. The deceased was a native of Annapolis , but for many years she had resided at Weymouth . She had been in failing health for some time and being of a retired disposition had led a very quiet life;gentle and amiable.She had many friends and no enemies. The remains were accompanied to Weymouth by Mrs James RAY, Mrs A. HOOPER, Mrs FERNALD , neices of the deceased and Charles RUGGLES , nephew, all of Deep Brook.
