Funeral from the Comeau funeral home, 47 Broadway Tuesday at 8 followed by a requeum high mass at St. Joseph's cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home Sunday and Monday from 2-5 and 7-10. Relatives and friends are invited.

Digby Courier 11 Nov. 1958 Eugenia Belle MARSHALL highly esteemed lady of South Range passed away at her home early Monday morning. Born in Riverdale she was the daughter of the late Charles and Sarah WAGNER COSMAN. she attended school at Southville and following her marriage to Augustus MARSHALL , moved to South Range where for over 40 years she and her husband operated a Post Office. She was a member of the Christian Church of South Range and was one of its most ardent supporters.It was a rare occasion when this fine lady missed the church service. Surviving are three children ;Harold MARSHALL , Conway ;Welcome MARSHALL in the USA and Muriel at home. Three children have preceased her. She is also survived by foster son , Hubert SHORTLIFFE of North Range. six grand children and six great grand children. The remains rested at Jayne's Funeral Home , Digby NS until Thursday noon when they were taken to the South Range Christian Church for service at 2:30 PM. Rev. J.W.Derby conducted the service and interment was in the family lot at South Range.

Digby Courier 11 Nov. 1958 The death occurred at the Digby General Hospital of Mrs Maud P.SULLIVAN wife of the late Frank SULLIVAN , Brighton , NS . She was born in Digby 76 years ago , the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs John GERMAIN. She leaves to mourn her loss one son, Bernard SULLIVAN of Digby ;two daughters Mrs George GAVEL of Southville NS and Mrs Herman GRAY , Brighton and 17 grandchildren and 13 great grand children ; one sister Mrs Charles COOK , Conway and one brother Ernest GERMAIN of Digby . Three sisters and one brother predeceased her some years ago. The funeral took place at Havelock NS Saturday , Nov. 1st. at the reformed Baptist Church of which she was a member and worker trying to bring others to Jesus.

Digby Courier Nov.11 , 1958 Leonard MOORE , for many years a resident of Centerville, Digby Co.,passed away at the Digby General Hospital on Sunday afternoon. He had been in failing health for the past two years. Born in Central Grove , 90 years ago, the son of the late Henry and Sophronia MOORE When a young boy the family moved to Centerville where he has since resided. Mr. MOORE followed the sea for a number of years and then took up farmimg. His wife , the former Augusta BUNKER passed away 25 years ago. Surviving are the following step-children ;Mrs Mary GRAHAM , Centerville ;Mrs Nora TITUS , Weymouth North; Mrs Winnie GRAHAM , Lake Paul; Mrs Lennie WALKER of Belmont NS and Pauline [Mrs Albert TITUS] of Centerville NS The remains resided at Jayne's Funeral Home in Digby until Tuesday noon when they were taken to the Centerville Baptist Church for service at 1:30 PM Rev. Donald McClare conducted the service and interment was in the family lot in Centerville

May 14 1959 HILLBURNE CROCKER Many friends and relatives in Freeport and various parts of nova scotia learned with regret of the sudden passing of Hillburne M. CROCKER of 11 Anawan Ave. Saugus MA . Mr. CROCKER was strickened with a heart attack and taken to Saugus General Hospital where he passed away on Tuesday April 21st. Born in Freeport NS a sixty-six years ago, he was the son of Deacon Joseph CROCKER. He graduated from Provincial Normal College and taught school in various parts of Nova Scotia, later going to MA where he was employed in the whole sale lobster business in Boston and Nova Scotia. He was a member of Cliftondale Methodist Church and William Sutton Lodge of Masons. Surviving are his wife , Lexena [CAMPBELL] CROCKER ;a daughter June [Mrs. Russell WHITENECT] , Halifax son Rev. Joseph H. CROCKER pastor of Alliston Methodist Church; his mother Mrs. Joseph CROCKER of Freeport ;two brothers Grafton of Melrose MA and Harold of Freeport ;two sisters Eva [Mrs. H. P.WARNE] Edmonton Alberta; Louise [Mrs Henry WALCOTT] Brockton MA;also two grand children Joanne and Stephen WHITENECT] , Halifax. Funeral service was held from the Cliftondale Methodist Church on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended. Sympathy is extended to all who are left to mourn his passing.

He was the son of the late Mr and Mrs Louis LEBLANC of Comeauville. In January 1915 he married Mrs Catherine MELANSON, widow of Little Brook, He leaves his widow , three sons , Louis of Dartmouth,Albenie of Grosse Coques, Elis , orderly of Saint John and three daughtes Sister Jacqueline[Elsie ] , Mrs DElphis COMEAU[ Zelma] with whom he resided and Mrs Emile THERIAULT [Stella ] of Comeauville. There are two children from his wife's first marriage , Rene at Concession and Mrs Joseph FLORENCE [Lea] of Norwick CT ; a niece whom he adopted , Mrs ANSELM of Comeauville ; two sisters Mrs Rosie MUISE , Digby and Mrs Stuard HUTCHINS [Amy ] of Lynn MA The funeral was held April 25th at Church Point , Father Camile Comeau , parish Priest officiated. Pall bearers were his four sons, Louis, Albenie , Elie and Rene assisted by Anselm DEVEAU of Salmon River.. The choir director was Alyre Comeau of Yarmouth who sang Beau Cill at the end of the Mass. The organist was Father Jean Paul of St. Anne College. Among the numerous who attended were fourteen Sisters of Charity.

Digby Courier Thursday 14 May 1959 J. MILTON SABINE J.Milton SABINE , in his 86thth. year, formerly of Weymouth, Nova Scotia died Friday , May 1 at the New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston MA. He had been residing at his son's home in Needham, MA for the past year and a half since the death of his second wife Mary ESTER. Mr. SABINE was born in Southville , Nova Scotia ,16 March, 1873. He attended Horton Academy in Wolfville, prior to special training at Halifax in funeral directing. Shortly after , he started his own undertaking and furniture business in Weymouth . In the late 20's he was appointed Justice of the Peace and became a Stipendidary Magistrate in and for the County of Digby in which capacity he served for several years. Mr. SABINE was a past member of the IOOF at Weymouth where he took an active part and also served in Halifax, Wolfville and several other places as a Grand Lodge Delegate. His first wife Jennie A. MELANSON , to whom he had been married for 47 years died in 1947. He is survived by his son Donald L. of Needham MA , a sister Maud MACNEILL of Armstrong BC and two grandchildren Richard SABINE , West Roxbury MA and Carole SABINE , Needham MA. Funeral services were held at the Eaton Funeral Home , Needham, Monday , May 4. Dr. Harold Cramer of the Carter Memorial Medodist Church, officiating.Interment will be in the Milton Cemetery , Milton MA . Mr. SABINE will be greatly missed by his host of friends in the United States and Canada

Digby Courier Thursdar May 14, 1959 JOHN ROGER LAWSON The death of John Roger LAWSON occured very suddenly of a heart attack on April 18th. at Miami FL.He was born in Lynn MA , 59 years ago , the son of the late Mr and Mrs George LAWSON,his mother being the former Maud MESSENGER of Bridgetown. Mr. LAWSON wasa commerical artist. He was a veteran of WW1 having been with the American 3rd. Division ,6th Engineers in France ,was a member of Wells-Hussy American Legion no.42. He was also a member of Alma Lodge no.43 AF and AM Ezra B French Royal Arch Chapter and Chrystal Chapter Order of Eastern Star no 37 Surviving are his wife , formerly Delma PETERS of Centerville , Digby Neck and a sister Rose[ Mrs Kenneth REID ] of Palo Alto CA , Mrs Raymond MOORE Sr. of Deep Brook NS is a cousin. A Masonic Funeral service was held in the Chapel of Philbrick Funeral Home , Miami Shores after which the body was taken to Grove Park Crematory . The remains will later be taken to the family plot in Lynn MA

There passed away on Monday, October the 19 th. ,at the Montreal General Hospital, Miss Josephine ROOP at the ripe old age of 98. Miss ROOP, or as she was usually called "Aunt Jesie" was born in the United States but moved to Clementsport with her parents at the age of two years. She was the eldest daughter of the late Deacon and Mrs. Joseph ROOP ( his first wife ) and with the exception of a few years in the United States after her Fathers's second marriage to the late Mrs. Catherine CHESLEY, and after her father's passing in 1925, Miss ROOP returned to the old home in Clementsport where she made her home with her Step-mother, and Half-sister Mrs. Margaret BURNS, after the death of Reagh Burns in 1957 Mrs. BURNS and Miss Roop went to St.John N.B. to make their home with Mrs. Burns' Daughter ( Phyllis ) Mrs, Theo BLACK, and her husband. Mr.Black who was with the C.P.R. in Saint John was transfered to head office in Montreal, necessitating the moving of the family and Miss Roop to Montreal in June this year. About a week previous to her passing Miss ROOP had the misfortune to fall and break her hip. Her remains were brought back to Clementsport on wednesday the 21 st.,where funeral services were held in the Baptist Church of which she was the oldest member at the time of her passing, The service was conducted by the Pastor of the church, the Rev. Sydney Whitehouse,assisted by the Rev. Frank SMITH, a close personal friend for 35 years of the family. Hyms sung were two of "Aunt Jesie'S" favorites, "What a friend we have in Jesus " And "Abide with Me " Interment took place in the family lot in the Union Cemetery Clementsport. Among those left to mourn her passing are her nephews Mr. ROSS and MR. Ira McCORMACK and Mr Fred R. HARRIS all of Bear River. Mrs. Rice KINNEY, Barton and Mrs. Norman PEVERILL, Sherbrooke P.Q., Mr. Lionel ROOP of Ottawa, Harold ROOP of the RCAF in Ontario, and a niece Mrs.Avis NEWMAN in the U.S.A. ( She was born June 18,1861)

He had been in poor health for the past year.Born in Deep Brook , fifty years ago he was the son of the late John and Ella [AMERO ]JORDAN .Surviving beside his wife, the former Edna DOUCETTE, are children Roy and Reid of Hamilton Ont ; Fred and Keith of Marshalltown ;and John of Caledonia ; Theresa [ Mrs Henry COMEAU ] Plympton;Audrey[Mrs Earl MORRELL] Wellington Ont. ;Jean [Mrs Arthur MCCORMICK] Wellington Ont. ; Lillian [ Mrs Bernard ROBICHAUD]; Anne JORDAN, Lorna JORDAN, Sheila JORDAN . Five brothers and three sisters also survive Lovett, Brighton; Louie, Bear River; Ralph, Ont.; Reginald and Harry Culloden; Majorie [Mrs Keith RAMEY, Bridgetown Esther [Mrs Albert SHIPLEY ] NJ and Mildred CB. The remains which rested at Jayne's Funeral Home in Digby were taken to the Roman Catholic Church in Marshalltown for service at 9am Wed. Interment was in St. Croix Cemetery, Plympton.

Saulnierville-- Funeral service for Patrick J. ARMSTRONG was held with a solemn high mass at Sacred Heart Church, Saulnierville. Mass was celebrated by his son, Rev. Louis ARMSTRONG, rector of St. Ambrose Cathedral, Yarmouth. He was assisted by Rev. L. MAILLET and L. COMEAU. Surviving besides his wife, are his sons, Rev. L. ARMSTRONG, Yarmouth; Gabriel, of St. Anne de Bellevue, Que.; Willis, of Meteghan Station; and John Amedee, of Bouctouche, N.B. ; three daughters, Sister Gabriel Marie of Moncton, and Sister Amedee Marie of Arichat, both Daughters of Jesus; and Mrs. Maurice BELLIVEAU (Felice) of West Arichat. Interment was in the Sacred Heart cemetery.

Jan. 13-- The community was saddened Jan. 2nd, with the passing of Mary Rose, beloved wife of William DEVEAU. Mrs. DEVEAU had lived most of her married life here, a member of our club she will be greatly missed by friends and neighbors. Sorrow came to her early last June with the passing of her only daughter. Since then she had been in declining health. Our sincere sympathy goes to Mr. DEVEAU and all the family. Mr. And Mrs. Bernard DEVEAU, who were vacationing in Ontario, were called home, due to the health of his mother, Mrs. William DEVEAU.

Digby Courier Thursday Aug. 25,1960 ZELDA P THURBER The funeral of Zelda Pearl THURBER , whose death occurred at the home of her sister , Mrs Warren GRAY , Kemptville NS on Aug. 6th. was held from the United Baptist Church at Freeport with the service conducted by the Rev, Mr. Ideson. Interment was in Brookside Cemetery . Pall bearers were Gene Tibert, Peter Milburn , B. Bouchie,AveryFinnigan , Willard Titus and Raleigh Nichols. Born in Freeport she was the eldest daughter of H. N. and Mrs Thurber. She was 59 years of age. Miss Thurber taught school in Nova Scotia for several years , moving later to the United States where she was employed for over thirty years by Rust Craft Corp., Dedham MA She leaves to mourn three sisters , Mrs Warren GRAY;[Irene ] ;Kemptville NS ; Mrs A.R. Frederick Otis HANKINSON, a well known citizen of Weymouth and vicinity, passed away very suddenly at his home Friday morning. Born in Weymouth August 8, 1889, he was the son of the late Frank and Margaret HANKINSON. He was a life long resident of Weymouth and was employed with his brother G. O. HANKINSON until he retired nine years ago. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church in which he acted as Deacon for many years. He was also a member of the Canadian Order of Forresters. Mr. HANKINSON is survived by his wife, the former Hazel CHRISTIE, Quebec; a son Daniel, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Lloyd GRANT (Dorothy), and Mrs. Wilfred COSMAN (Muriel). Also surviving is a brother, George, and a sister, (Hattie) Mrs. D. H. MacLEAN, Hopewell, Pictou Co.; several nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren, and one great grandson. The funeral service was conducted from the Riverside Baptist Church on Monday, with Rev. R. R. Winchester, assisted by a nephew of the deceased, Rev. Ward MacLean, of Halifax, officiating. The music was supplied by the Weymouth Falls Baptist choir. Interment was in the family lot in Riverside cemetery. The floral offerings were many and numerous, showing the high esteem in which the deceased was held.

Born in Marshalltown, 74 years ago he was the son of the late Benjamin and Annie DOUCETTE His wife was the former Lennie MELANSON . He was a member of the Roman Catholic Church at Marshalltown. He worked for many years with the Digby plant of the Martime National Fish. Surviving besides his wife are five sons and three daughters. Alonzo of Conway; Clifford and Carey of Marshalltown and Bennie and Nathan of Hamilton ;daughters Edna [Mrs Archibald JORDAN ] Marshalltown , Millie [Mrs Llewellyn WENTZELL ] Digby and daughter Sister Jana Bernadette of Quebec;sisters Lotti [ Mrs Carey HENSHAW] ; Bear River; Sadie [Mrs Ernest COMEAU] Marshalltown The remains rested at his residence until Friday when they were taken to the Roman Catholic Church at Marshalltown for mass at 9AM. Rev. Father GAUDET conducted the mass and interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Plympton.

Digby courier Thursady 35 May 1961 ALPHEUS B MARSHALL Alpheus B. MARSHALL ,91, retired Bear River merchant passed away at his residence Saturday. Born in Bear River he was a son of the late Alpheus and Tamar HARDWICK MARSHALL . He attended Horton Landing School , Mount Allison and was a graduate of Saint John Business school. Following his education , he worked for 15 years with the firm of John Marsh and Co. in Boston . He removed to Bear River where he worked for the firm of Clark Bros . Later he opened his own business on the location that is now known as the Bear River Trading Post. He served the people of the area for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Bear River United Church and of the Keith Lodge AF and AM. He served his lodge as treasurer for 35 years and was the possessor of the 50 year jewel and the gold cane. His wife the former Mary DUNN predeceased him in 1933. He is survived by a daughter , Katherine [Mrs Allen WALKER , Taunton MA also three grand children , Marshall, David and Judith of Taunton MA and two great grand children. two nephews Dr. A.M. W ILSON of Barrington NS , Mr ,I K WILSON Barrington NS , six nieces Mrs J. H. CUNNINGHAM , Bear River, Mrs A.G. MACINTYRE, Mrs F.W. FRASER, Mrs J B GORST ;Mrs William J. Digby Courier Thursday 25 May 196 J DIXON RICE One of Weymouth's prominent citizens J. Dixon RICE died Thursday at the age of 67.He had been ill for some months. The deceased was the son of the late Edward P. and Josephine [LEBLANC] RICE . He attended Saint Francis Xavier University and served his country during WW1. In 1919 he took over his father's retail grocery business which he operated until before his death. Mr. RICE was a devoted member of Saint Joseph's Roman Catholic Church in Weymouth . He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbas and a charter member of the Yarmouth Council, president of the Holy Name Society of Saint Joseph'a Church, president of the Weymouth Garden Club and past president of the Weymouth Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society , past president of the local Credit Union and a member of the Weymouth Board of Trade. He is survived by his wife the former Lennie M MELANSON , a son Edward , Halifax and two brothers Dr. J. Herbert RICE of Halifax and J. Nelson RICE of Washington DC . The funeral service was held Monday morning at 10:00 at Saint Joseph's Church . Burial in the family plot in Weymouth.

Digby courier , Thursday May 25 1961 FRED A ROBBINS Word was received by Clifford ROBBINS of the passing of his brother , Fred Albert ROBBINS of Worcester MA.on Sunday May 14. He was the son of the late James Albert and Mary Etta ROBBINS of Smith's Cove NS . The deceased had been in poor health the past two or three years.He underwent two operations in the past year. Besides his wife, Mildred D'ARCEY ROBBINS , formerly of Joggins Bridge , he is survived by two sons and two daughter of Worcester and Shewsbury MA and several grand children, also a brother Otis in California , two sisters in New York, and one in Virginia USA ; Hazel SMITH of Sudbury Ont.; Mrs Avard WILSON of Lawrencetown NS and Mrs Myrtle JACKSON of Depp Brook NS . He was 67 years of age and born in Bear River NS
