SAULNIER,Mary Josephine - 88, Halifax, passed away July 2, 2005, in Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Born in New Edinborough, Digby Co., August 5, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Leo and Emma (COMEAU) DOUCETTE. Mary was involved for over 30 years with the CWL and will be missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by her son, Bernard; daughter, Shirley (John) CHESAL, Sydney, daughter-in-law, Brenda; grandchildren, Jon and Amelia SAULNIER, Sarah and John CHESAL; special sister, August, Digby County; a number of nieces and nephews including Anita and Delbert. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Emedee; brother, Camille; sisters, Melvina and Esther. Visitation will be held today 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in T.K. Barnard Funeral Home, 3460 Dutch Village Rd., Halifax. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Pius Church, Rev. Duncan MacMaster officiating. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Sackville. Donations may be made in Mom's memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Nova Scotia Branch.

HATTIE, Joseph Donald - 92, Digby, died in Digby General Hospital on July 10, 2005. Born in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Charles William and Ethel (DOYLE) HATTIE. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Digby, and was a recipient of the Yarmouth Diocesan Order of Merit, January, 2001. He was the First Grand Knight of Council No. 5648, Digby and 4th Degree Member of J. Edgar Newell Assembly No. 2262. He was a well-known businessman and was actively involved in many organizations over the years. He was a former town councilor, volunteer and probation officer, and was a member of the Board of Trade, Hospital Board, School Board, Housing Commission, Water Commission, Honorary Member of the Digby Fire Department, Social Services Board and Kawanis Club. He is survived by sons, Rev. Joseph D. HATTIE, OMI, Halifax; Donald and his wife Irene, Digby; daughters, Joan (Mrs. Roger MCDONNELL) and Judy (Mrs. Jack MACDONALD); eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by wife, Mabel (MACISAAC); brothers, John, Ronald, and Bernard; sister, Geraldine HATFIELD. Visitation will be today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. with prayers at 8 p.m., followed by Knights of Columbus service, No. 5648, Digby, in Jayne's Funeral Home, Digby. JOHNSON, Ralph Scott - Died peacefully on Sunday, July 10, 2005. Born in Digby on February 27, 1923, he was the eldest son of Walter and Isabelle (VANTASSEL) JOHNSON. Ralph served in the RCAF from 1939-1946 as a WAG (wireless air gunner) attached to the RAF upon arrival in London and was honourably discharged in 1946 as MWO first class. Actively involved in community, Ralph served as president of the Digby Lions Club, the Digby Curling Club and the Digby Golf Club, and was a founding director in the formation of the Digby Neck Volunteer Fire Department. Ralph also served as a director of the Digby Housing Authority. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Bear River Branch. Ralph was predeceased by his wife, Lillian Ruth (MUNROE) JOHNSON, and his brother, Carl Newman JOHNSON. Surviving Ralph are sons, Douglas and Gary, both of Bridgewater; as well as daughters, Valerie, Edmonton, Alta.; Marilyn, Gatineau, Que., and Rosetta, Waterville, Kings Co. He is also survived by sisters, Thelma (Parker MANZER), Ashmore; Lois, Ontario; Lillian (Alan WILHELM), Ontario, and brothers, Roger (Marion), Lower Sackville; Walter Jr. "Buddy", Ontario; as well as several nieces, nephews and grandchildren. Cremation has taken place as per Ralph's wishes under the direction of Sweeny's Funeral Home, Bridgewater, and a memorial tribute service will be held in the Royal Canadian Legion Branch in Digby on July 19 at 1 p.m. A private family committal will follow in the Baptist cemetery. No flowers at the request of the family. He was a member of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Plympton. He worked for the Department of Highways for 13 years and raised cattle for many years. He is survived by his wife, Olive; sons, Blaine (Patricia), Plympton; Joey (Denise), Concession, Digby Co.; Neil (Terry), Plympton; sisters, Lucy JOHNSON and Marie SCOTT, both of Plympton; brothers, Jonnie, Bennie and Fred, all of Plympton; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Andy; sisters, Laura AMERO, Emma AMERO, Viola MACINTIRE; brother, Roy AMERO. He was a past caretaker for the Royal Bank, Digby. Paul enjoyed playing hockey and baseball. He coached youth soccer and T-ball. Paul was also a volunteer with his father, Alfred, at the Royal Canadian Legion, Digby. Paul is survived by his wife, Helen (GILLESPIE). He was the proud father of daughter, Leanne, and son, Cory, both at home. Also surviving is brother, Mitchell, Cornwallis, Annapolis Co. He was a clam harvester and loved being on the beach, the shore and the waters which took him home. SABEAN, Stientje - Celebrating the life of Stientje Sabean, age 91, of Weymouth North, Digby Co., and for the past two years residing in Plympton with her son and family, who died August 10, 2005, in Digby General Hospital. Born in Rotterdam, Holland, she was a daughter of the late Hendrik and Maria (SCHREUDERS) BLAAUW. She was very courageous during the Second World War and through her efforts saved many lives and helped with the liberation of her country. She was a tailor by trade and immigrated to Canada in 1948 to start a new life. Her kind, positive attitude was passed on to her family. She will always be remembered for her kind deeds, quick wit and sense of humour. THURBER, John Douglas Dyas - 90, beloved husband of Gertrude (THURBER), passed away on August 23, 2005, in Digby General Hospital. Born in Freeport, he was a son of the late John W. and Emily (TIDD) THURBER. He was the last surviving member of his family. "Doug" worked as a fisherman for many of his early years, as a cook's assistant on the " Princess Helene " and a cook on the vessel "Tagati ". He was employed for a time at the Westport Co-op. Later he was a foreman for Connors Bros. Fisheries, and once the fishery closed he worked at several construction jobs. He then became foreman for the Department of Transportation until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Freeport Masonic Lodge No.65, and a loving husband and father. She was a past postmistress for the Barton Post Office, and along with her husband Lloyd, owned and operated Grant's General Store, Barton. She enjoyed knitting, quilting and hooking rugs. She is survived by her daughters, Joan (Richard) ELLIS, Barton, and Diane SHORTLIFFE, Hammonds Plains; sister, Muriel COSMAN, Annapolis Royal Nursing Home (Weymouth); brother, Daniel (Bessie) HANKINSON, Weymouth; grandchildren, Kevin ELLIS, Kent ELLIS, Jennifer HEBB, Michael SHORTLIFFE, and Michelle SHORTLIFFE; eight great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Late Friday afternoon Marc Lee MITCHELL, 16 of Ardmore passed away after a tragic accident. Marc was a model citizen of Ardmore, and a wonderful student. He was involved in basketball and soccer at Dickson High school. Students looked up to him as someone they wanted to be. He will be greatly missed. Proceeded in death by his fraternal grandmother, Marilyn TISCHER of Lockport, Ill. Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family ahead of herself. She was our rock and instilled family traditions and importance in all of us. She brought out the best in everyone. We will miss her dearly and remember her always. Surviving are husband, Gerald; brothers, George, Fort Francis, Ont.; Bill, Regina, Sask.; sisters, Lena MERINUK, Roblin, Man.; Vera GORLICK, Winnipeg, Man.; Pearl SMITH, Winnipeg, Man.; Mary BULIZUIK, Regina, Sask.; Carol DUFUR, Mission Viejo, Calif.; Emily KENTEL, Langenburg, Sask.; Shirley KROCKER, Calgary, Alta. She is also survived by Gerald's immediate family, who were all very dear to Flo, Mae ROBICHEAU, Meteghan; Brenda and Ivan BLINN, Richard and Bernadette BLINN, Anna and Pierre LEBLANC, Olivier LEBLANC and Martin LEBLANC, all of Saulnierville. She was predeceased by brothers, Matt and Johnny; sisters, Sylvia and Doris. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Meteghan Funeral Home. Funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Stella Maris Church, Meteghan, Rev. Albeni D'ENTREMONT officiating. Interment in the parish cemetery. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Born in Doucetteville, Digby Co., she was the daughter of the late Alphie and Mary Elizabeth (THIBODEAU) DOUCETTE. She was a member of St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Marshalltown. She is survived by sons, Ellis (Joan), Digby; Jimmy (Lynn), Port Perry, Ont.; daughter, Patricia (Patrick) MADDIGAN, Oromocto, N.B.; grandchildren, David DOUCETTE, Denise REID, Melody MADDIGAN, Tracey TURNER, Danny MADDIGAN, Michael DOUCETTE, Jacinthe COMEAU; great-grandchildren, Owen, Derrick, Krista, Cory, Darcy, Kendra, Max, Kyle, Meagan, and Tiffany. She was predeceased by her husband, J. Elliott DOUCETTE; son, Clarence. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Friday in Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch St., Digby. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. today in St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church, Marshalltown, Father Keith Billard officiating. Interment in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Plympton. GIDNEY, Mary Elizabeth "Libby" - 88, Tideview Terrace, Digby, formerly of Rossway, Digby Co., passed away October 28, 2005, in Tideview Terrace. Born in Rossway, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Ina (WHITE) GIDNEY. She is survived by sisters, Vivian RAYMOND, Rossway; Alva THIBAULT, North Range, Digby Co., and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by brothers, Loran, John, Ray; sisters, Vira and Vera. No visitation by request. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Tuesday in Jayne's Funeral Home, 7 Birch St., Digby, Rev. John PURDY officiating. Interment in Rossway Community Cemetery. Donations in memory can be made to Rossway Community Cemetery Fund.

2006 Grace Harriet SPARKS

SPARKS (HANKINSON), Grace Harriet Grace Harriet (HANKINSON) SPARKS, age 92, youngest daughter of George and Maude (GATES) HANKINSON, born in Weymouth on November 15, 1913, peacefully passed away on January 25, 2006. She attended Simmons College in Boston, Mass., along with her nursing school at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Brookline, Mass. She graduated in 1934, and became a registered nurse. In 1941 she joined the United States Navy as an Ensign in the Nurse Corps and served in Brooklyn, N.Y., Norfolk, Va., and Philadelphia, Pa. She leaves her husband, Harry R. SPARKS Jr.; and daughters, Sandra Lee SPARKS, Springfield, Mo., Charlene DICKENS, St. Louis, Mo.; and grandsons, James R. and John M. LAUNIUS, St. Louis, Mo. She also leaves brother, Kenneth HANKINSON and his wife Eleanor, Weymouth. She was preceded in death by brothers, Scott, Thomas, Curtis and George W. HANKINSON; sisters, Margaret, Esther and Klara. A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Chrust Church Unity, 2214 East Seminole St., Springfield, Mo. 658014. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Christ Church Unity.
