The Parish of Sainte-Famille

First settled in the 1680's, Pisiquid district become one of the major settlements in the French colony of Acadie. With an agricultural economy based on farming the marshlands which they had dyked, the settlement prospered during the 18th century. The parish of Sainte-Famille was established in 1698 and a second parish, l'Assomption, was founded in 1722.

After it became an English possession in 1713, Acadie enjoyed a period of peace and prosperity which lasted approximately thirty years. The period that followed was marked by war and increased tension between England and France.

Perceived as rebels by the English, who coveted their lands, the Acadians were expelled in 1755. Most of the Sainte-Famille parishioners were deported to other British American colonies. Very few of them would see their native land again. Today, their descendants live mostly in Louisiana, in Quebec or in Acadie.
