The 1871 Census of Nova Scotia was the first Census in the province to include all persons in the household. Information provided in the census are the names, ages, sex, occupation, marital status, and year of birth, place of birth, religion and national Origin of each person.
NOTE: The Communities that have (.xls) means that Microsoft Excel or Word Perfect Quattro Pro is required to view the information. Inorder to view information online you will have to view it with Microsoft Explorer. I apologize for this.
Halifax City
Thanks to Maggie McCracken who has volunteered to scan
images of the Halifax City 1871 Census. She has scanned and offered the
images to be used on this website. The files are arranged in images imbedded
into Microsoft Word. You will be downloading a .zip file containing an
entire Ward division. These files are quite (I mean REALLY) large, so patience
is needed.

A good source for the 1871 Census is an Pat Smith's 1871 Census for Halifax City Surname Index, which can be purchased through Pat at this address:
In Canada the index will cost: $21 + $1.00 for P.O.D., and in the
U.S. it will cost $16 s&h included.
