LOCATION:
The community of Hackett's Cove is situated between
Indian Harbour and Seabright, along the old Peggy's Cove Road.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
It might have been named after a settler called
Haggett, but there is not evidence that any such family lived there.
The name Haggett is found in reference to a school district that
existed during the early 1800s.
COMMUNITY HIGHLIGHT:
Among the Loyalist pioneers was the MacDonald
family, originally from Scotland. Hugh MacDonald had fought for the
British during the American Revolution and was granted land along
St. Margaret's Bay. There is a headstone in the graveyard attached
to St. Peter's Anglican Church that states Hugh erected it when his
mother, Jeanette died. It may well be the oldest headstone in the
St. Margaret's Bay area.
COMMUNITY LORE:
There is a family story, never confirmed, that these
MacDonalds were related to Flora MacDonald, the spirited Highland
lass who hid Bonnie Prince Charlie from the British after the Battle
of Culloden. The sheets that Jeanette is buried in are said to be
the same ones that Prince Charles slept in while hiding with the
MacDonald family on the Isle of Skye.
HACKETT'S COVE TODAY:
Today's residents of Hackett's Cove are fishers or
are involved in the tourist industry. Others work for NAUTEL
Limited, a manufacturer of high power radio frequency products,
which was established over thirty years ago.
