HALIFAX COUNTY
Harrietsfield

LOCATION:

Harrietsfield is located about ten kilometers south of Halifax along the Old Sambro Road, or Route #306.

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

The community was probably named for the wife of Colonel William Thompson who was living in the area by the 1780s.

SETTLEMENT HISTORY:

In 1790, Casper Gruber arrived, and by 1827 there were at least nine other families in the community.

HARRIETSFIELD AND WILLIAMSWOOD TODAY:

Today this is a largely rural residential area, with access to Halifax along the Old Sambro Road. There are a few commercial enterprises, schools, several churches and a fire hall as well as a trailer park which was developed about thirty years ago. The population of the community has been increasing slowly over the years, thanks, in part, to the expansion of the Williamswood area, located near Harrietsfield.
