HALIFAX
COUNTY
Jollimore
LOCATION:
Jollimore is a suburb of Halifax on the North West
Arm, situated off Purcell's Cove Road.
WHAT'S IN A NAME?
The area is named for the family who first settled
Purcell's Cove Road. The original Jollimores were from Terence Bay
but wanted to be closer to the city. The family realized the
benefits of a ferry service across the North West Arm and were
issued a license to carry passengers on their ferry. It was not
until 1902 that the area was officially called Jollimore Settlement.
It became a part of the City of Halifax on January 1, 1969.
FAMOUS RESIDENT:
The community includes Sir Sanford Fleming Park,
known colloquially as "The Dingle" after American
immigrant Richard Dingle. Sir Sanford is recognized as the Father of
Time for creating the world's time zones. He was also instrumental
in designing Canada's first postage stamp and played a major role in
the development of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
In 1896 he donated land in Jollimore for a community
church. Later, in 1908, he had the stone edifice known as the Dingle
Tower erected and donated it to the City of Halifax to commemorate
150 years of representative government in Nova Scotia. The
dedication took place four years later in 1912.
