County, Nova Scotia, Canada |

New to Hants County?
|
Hants County occupies the
central part of the
Province of Nova
Scotia, Canada. The County of Hants was created in 1781
out of one of the original counties --
King's County. Once comprised of seven townships in two
divisions,
Hants
County currently has four municipal divisions: the
Town of
Windsor, the
Town of Hantsport, the
Municipality
of Hants West and the
Municipality
of Hants East. Hants has long been associated with
traditional farming, mining, lumbering and at one time had great
ship-building along the north shore areas. The county remains
primarily a rural area to this day. Windsor, Hantsport and
Shubenacadie are the main towns in the county. The
2001 census of indicates that the County of Hants
had a population totaling 40,513, an increase of 2.6% from
39,483 in 1996. |

Selmah in 1853.

SELMAH IN 1853.
A Paper read before the Presbyterian Social in Selmah,
Maitland, Hants County, Nova Scotia, 1894.
... "After the French were gone, for a number of years we have
no records of any person living in Selmah. In the year 1765, Mr.
Salter, of Halifax, obtained from the Crown a grant of 2,500
acres, extending on the shore from near Mr. Alfred Putnam's
shipyard to Lower Selmah. All that has come down to us of his
ownership is the name of "Salter's Head," and our worthy citizen
and county councillor, Mr. Stairs, is one of his descendants.
The Salter Grant, except 100 acres at the upper side, passed by
purchase about twenty years later to General Small, who, at the
close of the American Revolution, settled the Kennetcook and
Nine Mile River districts with soldiers who had been disbanded
at the close of that unfortunate struggle, and were rewarded for
their sacrifices and services with allotments of lands in those
districts."

Accepting
Undocumented Information
By Dan Craycraft in
Cleveland, Ohio, USA
A word of caution to new genealogists. When I began using
the Internet, some five to eight years ago, I accepted
everything that was given to me. I was like a magpie, saving
everything. Unfortunately, I began to post this undocumented
information on the RootsWeb's WorldConnect.
Then the problems began. I received dozens of queries over
the years as to where I got my information. Of course, I
could only explain that it came from John or Jane Doe.
After several years of receiving this type of query, I came
to the conclusion that if it was not my research, I would
delete it from my database and from WorldConnect.
My advice to new genealogists -- don't incorporate someone
else's work into your database. Use their work as a
launching pad, but do not accept their work as fact without
doing the research yourself. This process will save you many
agonizing hours of answering inquiries as to the source of
your information.
Be very careful about what you post online and what access
you allow others to have to your data. I have several
examples where I freely gave my family tree (GEDCOM) to
others. They in turn incorporated it into their databases
and now, I cannot retract what I gave them. Unfortunately,
during those early years of my investigation into my family
line, incorrect information was included. Yet, those errors
continue today to be posted on their websites!
