1817 Census of Nova Scotia: Hants County

A census taken only for the counties of Hants, Pictou, and Sydney. This "head of family" census also lists the sex and ages of other members in the family.

The Public Archives of Nova Scotia in Halifax have the 1817 census of Hants County available on microfilm number 13582. It is the only item on the entire microfilm. Perhaps the Hants census was somehow discovered after the other portions of the 1817 census were filmed [M-5220]. There are 32 pages of the Hants census imaged; being Windsor - 8 pages, Falmouth - 4 pages, Newport - 7 pages, Shore District - 2 pages, Rawdon - 3 pages and Douglas - 8 pages. Unfortunately, about twenty-five percent of each page is illegible. This appears to be smoke damage, perhaps the originals barely survived the Windsor fire of 1897.
