Gerald Chisholm - Truro, Sept. 12 - Well known throughout
Nova Scotia, G.C. McElhiney died at his home, this afternoon
after an illness of two days. Prominent in the musical life of
the province, Mr. McElhiney was the possessor of a rich baritone
voice and for many years delighted audiences throughout Nova
Scotia, taking leading roles in many concerts and recitals, and
being greatly in demand. Gerald Chisholm McElhiney was born in
Windsor, May 21, 1890, the eldest son of the late George W. and
Mrs. McElhiney. As a young man, he moved to Halifax where he was
employed at the outbreak of the First Great War. Enlisting in
the 64th Battalion, he went to England as a sergeant with that
unit and later transferred to "The Fighting 25th" with which he
was commissioned, receiving the Military Cross for bravery on
the field and was promoted to Captain. Upon his return to Canada
in 1919, Mr. McElhiney resumed his position at Mahon’s Limited,
but later moved to Sydney where he remained for some time before
taking a position in the Customs Office in his native Windsor.
Later he established residence at Truro, where he took a
prominent part in the life of the town. For many years he was
Choir Director at First Baptist Church and later was a member of
St. Andrew’s United Church choir. He is survived by his wife,
the former Josephine Harris; a daughter, Geraldine, and son
John; also three sisters and one brother: Mrs. H. S. Anslow of
Windsor; Miss Almeda of Santa Maria, California; Miss Mabel and
C.R. McElhiney, both of Halifax. Funeral services, which
Canadian Legion members will attend, will be held Thursday
evening at eight o’clock at St. Andrew’s United Church, Truro,
conducted by Rev. H. J. Rowley, and the remains will be taken on
Friday morning to Windsor, where following the arrival of the
train, a service will be held at Trinity United Church,
conducted by Rev. P. A. Fitzpatrick, pastor, assisted by Dr. W.M.
Ryan, a former pastor. Interment will take place in Maplewood
cemetery.
