ST. JAMES CHURCH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, SPRY BAY

The original church building was destroyed in August, 1872 by a fierce gale. The community joined together and rebuilt the church. On Jan. 24, 1874, the opening service was conducted by Rev. John Waddell and Dr. Sedgwick from Middle Musquodoboit.

The original church was built with hand hewn timbers from trees from the Grand Lake area. The second church was built from timbers salvaged from the Railway Queen. Money for the rebuilding was raised by the salvaging and selling of copper sheeting from other wrecks. Also, pews were sold for $20 to $50.

To prevent the new church from suffering the same fate as the original, the builders tied down the building to some rocks with lengths of one inch round iron attached to the back of the church.

The total cost of the rebuilding came to $1700
