President's Report Veteran's Project
As stated in the last newsletter the South Shore Genealogical Society and LaHave Islands Marine Museum have decided to work on a joint project about our Lunenburg County veterans. Enclosed in this newsletter you will find an outline you can fill in about any veteran you may have in your family tree who was born in Lunenburg County or who has close ties to our county. We hope you will reproduce the outline if you have more than one person. These information pages will become a part of the research documents at the South Shore Genealogical Society. As we are gathering information, we are surprised at where we can find information. You know those scrapbooks Granny made during her lifetime- they have a wealth of information !! This project should not be from the work of one or two persons. Each person/member should have a hand in gathering information and sending it to the address of the South Shore Genealogical Society "ATTENTION: Veteran Project Manager."
Strategic Plan
On June 7th three of our members will be attending a seminar on strategic planning. We are looking into whether we as a genealogical society qualify for any provincial grant from the Heritage Sector of Nova Scotia.
Cemetery Books
At our last meeting we held a discussion on what we should do with our now some what outdated Cemetery books. (One of the books was published in 1985 and others before 2000.) We do have updates for many of the cemeteries. Some of our original books were done with a Gestetiner and so there is no computer copy to make reprints while other books were done on the computers. We realized to reprint them as books would be costly and very time consuming. Knowing the age of our current computers and their capabilities, a motion was passed to buy a new computer, printer and scanner for the office.
We are really fortunate to have Candice with us again this year. She graduated this year but will be resuming her studies in the fall. Congratulations Candice and thanks for returning this summer to our office.
Boat Launch On July 23rd, 2005 there will be a launch of the Tancook Whaler Amos Stevens at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic. The South Shore Genealogical Society will be participating in the launch to celebrate the families of Tancook Island. If anyone has pictures or information about the Tancook families that they could loan the society it would be deeply appreciated. For more information contact the society through e-mail or phone.

Spring There is a growing richness everywhere
A stirring in the land and air
The tree is decking out in bright attire
The milky-cloud sail sea of deep sapphire
Red lilies grow in every shady nook,
And dandelions beside the bubbling brook.
There is a feeling fresh, a throbbing ring
All things in newness seem to lift and sing.
The robin trills a merry note of cheer,
And proudly claims his territory here.
The mud-free-frog puffs out his noisy peeping
A dancing rendezvous the sly grouse keeping.
There is the joy of laughter round about
In children's happy play and friendly shout.
The earth is turned made ready for the seed
The hoe and spade are flinging garden weed.
Old pussy snoozes in a sunny bed
A great hawk soaring lazily overhead.
This the time when nature seems to bring
A sense of bliss to every living thing.
From dawn's enchant when rosy-tint is spilling
To sunset crimson-jade the sight is thrilling,
And all around the mantel-wrap of green
Adds glowing beauty to the springtime sceneby. Lillian Mona Smith

Service Pays Tribute To Late Curate And Wife A memorial service impressive and of much interest, especially to the older residents of the town, was held Sunday afternoon August 17 [1933] in St. John's Anglican Church, the officiating clergyman being Rev. H.J. Knickle of the Church of the Holy Trinity, New York City, in the absence of the rector, Rev. W. E. Ryder. The service was in memory of the Rev. George D. Harris, a curate to the late Rev. H.L. Owen, who was the beloved rector of St. John's parish from 1852 to 1884, and his wife, Susan Harris, daughter of Rev. H.L. Owen, whose cremated remains were brought here by their two sons, Rev. Cyril Harris of Providence, R.I., and Warwick Harris of Lincoln, Mass., and buried in one grave in the Owen family plot in the Lunenburg cemetery in accordance with the wishes of the deceased.
Both the burial service in the church and the committal service at the grace were taken by Rev. H.J. Knickle. Special music was rendered by the choir and a large number of the friends of the family were present.
Rev. George Harris was rector of Upper LaHave for a number of years and also of Weymouth, and since then was a resident of the United States where he was in active service clergyman until his sudden death, which occurred at his home at Randolph, Mass. On May 24, 1933, eighteen days after his wife had passed away following a lengthy illness at the hospital at Jamaica Plains.
King's Graduate
Mrs. Harris was the daughter of Rev. Henry L. Owen who graduated from King's College in 1933 and became rector of St. John's In 1852. The Owen family had been closely associated with the interests of this town and St. John's church, the founder of the family here, John Owen, a native of Wales, Coming from Lunenburg in 1819. Heads of the Owen Families prominent in the life of Lunenburg in their day were: Rev. Henry L. Owen and Daniel Owen, barrister, who both passed away at an advanced age and are buried in the Lunenburg cemetery. A son Daniel Owen, now of Halifax, followed his father's profession and practised in Lunenburg for many years. Four years ago Mr. & Mrs. Daniel M. Owen presented $10 000 to St. John's Anglican Church, Lunenburg; to be known as the Owen Family Memorial Trust Fund, the interest of which is to assist in the education at King's college of two divinity students from the parish, and a tablet bearing all the family names is placed in the church directly opposite the Owen pew. Other relatives present at the service besides the two sons of Rev. Mr. Harris were Mr. & Mrs. D.M. Owen and daughter, Elizabeth, Halifax; and Napean C. Owen and two daughters, Bridgewater.

Summer Projects Along with the veterans project and the boat launch, the SSGS has a number of projects planned for the summer.
Audrey Heim Collection
The SSGS is currently working on organizing and indexing the genealogical work of the late Audrey Heim. Her collection includes Arenburg, Gillmore, Baker, and Fancy families to name a few. The collection has been generously donated and includes over 40 binders on Lunenburg County names. The society hopes to have the Heim collection on the shelves for viewing this fall.
Electronic Index
In an effort to make research easier the SSGS office now has a searchable inventory for visitors to find what they are looking for on the shelves. Hopefully this system will eventually replace the traditional index cards.
Cemetery Updates
The SSGS will continue to revise cemetery databases that input new information on Lunenburg County cemeteries. The information recorded comes from tombstone inscriptions that are recorded by volunteers that visit the cemeteries.
Computer Resources The SSGS has quite a bit of computer resources that have been donated, and can be viewed in the office. The collection includes Don Shankle's genealogy work; Nova Scotia Obituaries; Fader Family genealogy; Monuments of New Ross; Dorr Family Research; Obituaries from the Halifax Herald; A family tree of Westhavers; Sea Captains; Vital Statistics from Newfoundland; King's County cemeteries & Vital Statistics, the Acadian Census, and more !
Back in 1894..... Local and Other Matter
-Lemonade and lemon pies are the rage
-Don't take a tumble on the deceptive orange peel
-The hotels have been doing a fine business the past week. Travel has been exceedingly brisk.
-Mrs. Adolphus Wile showed us a curiosity this morning in the shape of three roses which grew from one bud.
-Mr. Commissioner of Streets, there is another hole in the sidewalk in front of the Post Office requiring a slab patch. Be sure and make the slab high enough to trip over!
-Trout fishing is again the local fad. Every day parties may be seen wending their way to or from the abode of the wily fish, more or less successful. Logan and Spencer brought home some beauties last week.Weekly Bulletin Monday May 14,1894
Vital Statistics The SSGS has completed the second volume of the Index To Vital Statistics. The second volume spans the years of 1900-1909, and to give an indication of the format that was used for both the first and second volumes, a copy of a page has been enclosed. Volume two of the index is being sold by the society for $35.00, and all references in the index can be found at the SSGS.
