Post - 1901 Census
As an update on the status of the Post-1901 Census, portions of the following letter have been taken from the following site: Web Site - Gordon A. Watts, Port Coquitlam, BC. gordon_watts@telus.net. (Permission to forward without notification is granted)
"Senator Lorna Milne requested us to pass on the message below relating to her efforts in the Senate and the effect of the newly called Federal election on Bill S-15."
'Greetings everyone!
As you know by now, Prime Minister Chrétien has called an election for the 27th of November. I want to bring you all up-to-date on the implications of the election on Bill S-15, my Archives of Canada Act (census records).
Bill S-15 had been referred for further study to the Senate Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology. It has now died, along with that committee, but I intend to reintroduce the same bill as soon as Parliament resumes after the election. I expect that it will move through the Senate much more quickly this next time, as my colleagues will be familiar with the intent of the bill.
My real agenda has always been to get the Minister responsible for Statistics Canad, formerly John Manley but now Brian Tobin, to introduce a Government Bill to solve our problem. Several of the key players in this exercise, including myself, the head of 'Stats' Canada, the Privacy Commissioner and the National Archivist, worked all summer to hammer out a compromise position for a Government Bill. We had succeeded, and our proposition was placed before Cabinet just prior to the election call. Now, of course, all bets are off since after the election we will be dealing with a new Minister, a new Cabinet and a new Privacy Commissioner.
In the meantime, I urge all of you to take advantage of this election to press all the candidates in your own riding for their stance on the Release of the Historic Census issue. Don't forget that it was the pressure you put on all Parliamentarians that helped me get the issue this far!
Sincerely, Senator Lorna Milne

Preserving Canada's Wartime Experience
A new Canadian history project entitled "The Canadian Letters and Images Project", the purpose of which is to create a permanent national electronic archive of Canadian war-related correspondence, accessible to anyone interested in this aspect of Canada's history. The project is seeking contribution from Canadians of all regions. The SSGS received a letter requesting us to advise our members.
"We are urging Canadians to look in their closets and attics for any correspondence and to share a part of Canada's past. Every letter or postcard we receive will make a difference in preserving this important aspect of Canada's heritage."

....from Bridgewater Bulletin, 1920
"Bride Sent from Altar to Dress" - New Orleans, USA June 23, 1920. A wedding ceremony in St. Louis Cathedral was postponed several hours today, because the officiating priest, Father Antoine, of the Order of Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate, declared the bride was immodestly attired and violated a recent order of the diocese relative to wearing apparel.
Although he declined to reveal the name of the bride, he declared she "wanted to fly in society style at her wedding, much to her disgrace."
Everything had been prepared for the wedding and the bridegroom was in the edifice. The altars were ablaze with candles and the electric lights in every part of the ancient cathedral were lighted. The bride started up the main isle, but had not gone far before the priest viewed the gown, ordered the lights out and sent her to assume other garments. The ceremony was then performed.
