THANK YOU

The S.S.G.S would like to give many thanks to members and non-members for their support during the family reunion. The office received 302 visitors in the month of July, and the enthusiasm for genealogy was over-whelming. The Society can not express enough gratitude for the priceless materials donated throughout that week and the summer. Some materials received have taken a life time to collect and provide people from far and wide with an opportunity to find new relatives. Donations keep our shelves up to date and aid many people on their quests. Special thanks to these people who have been so generous with their work. In addition to the visitors, the S.S.G.S really appreciates your contributions

THIEL/DIEHL SPELLING

The following are excerpts from an e-mail the Society received from Scott Winston Teal regarding the Thiel/ Diehl family.

"There has been an error frequently recorded online and in many genealogies regarding the 4 Thiel/Diehl Families that were among the Foreign Protestants. Nobody knows for certain what the original spellings of these families were and it is possible some were Thiel while others were Diehl."

"It is my hope and intention to straighten out this matter once and for all. Everywhere I see that the descendants of Johann Erasmus, Conrad, Johannes and John Jacob Thiel are now the Deal families of today. This is quite incorrect!"

For more information about the concerns outlined above, or to read the rest of this e-mail contact Mr. Teal at swthiel@hotmail.com

GERMAN TRANSLATIONS

The S.S.G.S has been working on updating the records for Hillcrest Cemetery in Lunenburg. The new project allows people to locate the exact place in the cemetery where their relatives are buried. In compiling this project the society was delighted to have help from the Neumann family. In a chance meeting the compilers of the cemetery project stumbled across a family from Germany. The family helped a great deal in translating German text for the Society's records. They even translated some German-Swiss stones! We would like to extend much gratitude for their contributions

E-MAILS ABOUT THE REUNION

As some members already know, the S.S.G.S took some criticism for the amount of involvement in the reunion and the location of the office. To give our members some indication of the society's stance on the feedback the following are excerpts from an e-mail by Joan Parks-Hubley. Joan is a board member of the S.S.G.S who is not responding officially for the society, but expresses her own personal experiences.

"First, I want to be sure folks understand there are no permanent staff members at S.S.G.S. we have one summer student this year. In years past, we have sometimes had two summer students and an occasional grant person for a specific project. We do not have any permanent ongoing grants that sustain us.....S.S.G.S has a small but dedicated group of members in Lunenburg. Some of these people are older and are not in good health and cannot do what they used to."

"I think the local S.S.G.S. members participated as much as they were able to and the reason they were not at the Academy more days was because they could not get volunteers to staff a table, as well as the office. Barbara Spindler and Janet Heisler were helping people find graves in the cemetery. Lots of S.S.G.S members like myself were at tables representing families. Some S.S.G.S members were the key people on the Monument Committee and were working hard at fund-raising and ensuring the special event came together for the rest of us...... There just is a limited pool of people locally to do all the possible tasks."

Program and Education for S.S.G.S

Another e-mail written by Rosemary Rafuse outlines reactions from a long time volunteer:

"I have been a once-a-week volunteer at the office of S.S.G.S for over six years. I have never, in that time, seen a Thursday when anyone was ever turned away from our room. There has always been room for all to work. It is not a dark, cramped room. We try to make it a friendly place where everyone gets help in their research. The museum staff has always welcomed me to their building. They are very generous and giving to the S.S.G.S. Mr Tupper and all his staff go out of their way to make room for us. There are many visitors to our office who have benefited greatly from the knowledge of Ralph Getson. One only has to ask and one receives. The S.S.G.S. is very fortunate to have an office in the museum building. We do enjoy being there"
