| Helpful Hints | |
| Attachments | Please do not send attachments to the list. They can cause problems for some subscribers. Instead, announce to the list what you have to share, and then send the attachment to those who request it from you. |
| Chain Letters | Please do not post chain letters to the mailing list. 99.99% of them are hoaxes. |
| Commercial Postings | Subscribers are encouraged to post messages about books, other materials and services for sale if they relate to Pictou County genealogy, history, and culture. However, frequent postings can be annoying so I ask you to use good judgement. |
| Patience | Many subscribers are new and unsure of how to go about their genealogical pursuits, and therefore unsure how to ask questions in a way that elicits the help of others. Please be patient with these eager folks as they will get the hang of it soon enough. |
| Personal Attacks | Otherwise known as "flames", as well as offensive or discriminatory language cannot be tolerated. These are the sole reasons for removing someone from the list. |
| Responding to Posted Messages | Replies to the list are highly encouraged, especially if the topic is relevant to others on the list. This list was created for a public exchange of information. |
| Spam | To help remain spam free, this list is closed. You must be subscribed in order to post a message to it. |
| Subject line | To get the most from your postings, encourage readers to actually read it by placing the specific surname, place name in the subject line, e.g. MacNeil in NewGlasgow, 1860. |
| Surname | Always write the surname in CAPS. However, writing all of your message in caps is hard to read and considered rude behaviour. You will probably be asked why you are shouting if your message is all in caps. |
| Virus Alerts | Please do not post virus alerts to the mailing list. 99.99% of them are hoaxes. For information on virus hoaxes, visit: http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html |
