Grants, Deeds, &c

Grants, deeds, mortgages and release of mortgage, leases, liens, and sheriff's deeds can provide a wealth of information to researchers. In addition to locating the  ancestor you are looking for you may also determine:
  • location of the property bought or sold,
  • occupation of the grantor (purchasor) and grantee (vendor),
  • name of spouse
  • names of neighbours bordering the property,
  • witnesses who are often siblings or parents, and
  • children may be named if the property is being divided
Pictou County Deeds can be found for 1771 onward at:
The Registry of Deeds,
69 Water Street,
Justice Complex,
Pictou, NS

While many of the original land grant documents have been removed to the Public Archives (PANS) in Halifax, a number of them still remain at the Pictou Registry of Deeds.  Deeds are indexed in groups by year by grantor and also by grantee.

In July, 2002 the fee was $5 per half day search fee.
