Ballina & Richmond River GenWeb Ballina Pioneer Cemetery
Overlooking North Creek, the Richmond River and the Northern Coast of South Ballina rests the Ballina Pioneer Cemetery. The Cemetery is bordered by The Serpentine, Hill Street and Park Street. The Pioneer Cemetery is now a peaceful park with a glorious view. The headstones have been removed from their original grave site and placed in a group of walls in the park. The walls form the centre of a recreational facility containing small expanses of grass and seating. The location of the first cemetery in Ballina was selected because it was convenient to the settlement by land and provided easy access by water. The soft, sandy soil was also favourable.
