HANCOCK

MARK HANCOCK was born 1820 in Henbury Gloucestershire England, and died 18 May 1898 in Ballina NSW Aust. He married ISABELLA HANNAM 17 June 1838 in St Mary Le Port Bristol England, daughter of RACHEL HANNAM. She was born 27 March 1814 in Fifehead Magdalen Dorset England, and died 8 April 1878 in Woodburn NSW Aust.

Notes for MARK HANCOCK:

Mark and Isabella gave birth to at least six children. Three sons survived and sailed for Australia, as assisted immigrants with Mark and Isabella on the 'Anna Maria' on the 9th March, 1857. The Journey to Sydney took 108 days; arrival being on the 25th June 1857. It is not clear whether the family disembarked at Sydney or Ballina. Mark was listed as a sawyer who could read but not write and Isabella was a tailoress who could both read and write.
The booklet 'Reminiscences - Ballina The Early Days' refers to Mark and his son Charles. Charles. J. AINSWORTH recalled Mark Hancock living at Mobbs Bay at about the same time as Thomas MOBBS senior - 1854 or thereabouts - (we believe the timing is just a little out), he also stated that Mark was the father of Charles Hancock of Pimlico and that Mark later moved to Woodburn where he took up one of the first selections in the district. Mark was a witness at the funeral of William Ward (23/12/1862), at Ballina.

Mark took up a selection of 40 acres on the South Bank of the Richmond River on the 1st January, 1964. Although Mark's death certificate described him as a sawyer, it is believed he was involved in dairy farming at Kilgen. The 1890/1891 Electors Richmond River Electorate places a Mark Hancock at Ballina. The three sons of Mark and Isabella:
