HOLMES

Richard Holmes was the son of James Holmes & Mary Ann Kiland of the Clarence River. James & Mary Ann married in 1856. They produced an enormous family. Their children included: Thomas (1857), Elizabeth (1859), Mary (1860), Jane (1861 - 1862), Ellen (1863), James (1865), Andrew M. (1867), female (1868), William J. (1870), Richard (1872), Joseph (1874), Jane (1876), Charles P. (1878) & Agnes (1880 - 1880).

Richard moved from the Clarence in 1894 & worked as a contract road maker. In September 1896 Richard married Margaret Hartigan (daughter of Denis & Winifred Hartigan) & took up residence at East Wardell.

Richard & Margaret had three children: Denis (1897), Ruby May (1899) & Ellen Mary [Nelly](1901). Denis served in France during the First World War. He was wounded & invalided out of the ARmy in March 1918. Denis then lived at Randwick, Sydney.Ruby married Viv Sanderson of Sydney. Ellen gained her teaching qualification at Hereford House in Sydney & taught for some time at Wardell Public School. She married Stan Schwinghammer of South Grafton.
