FOREWORD

"MACLEAN, THE FIRST FIFTY YEARS 1862-1912"

The Maclean District Historical Society Inc. has again successfully undertaken to capture and record the history of our area.

This publication traces the development of the Town of Maclean from the time of its survey and first settlement in 1862 for 50 years to 1912. This was a very important era during which the foundation of present Maclean was laid.

The publication concentrates entirely on the early history of the town and records in considerable detail information about the people who contributed to its establishment during its first 50 years. It is a tribute to these early pioneers.

Many people will readily relate to the names of these pioneers of the town as many of the names continue on today in current generations of these families. Many streets and public facilities have been named in honour of these pioneers.

The book comprises some 380 pages of text, pictures and maps and it will prove to be a valuable reference for people interested in the early history of the town and in its current architecture. Many of the town's buildings were erected during this early period.

Mrs. Lin McSwan, assisted by members of the Historical Society, has again put her extraordinary talent to use in researching and preparing this important historical book. She is to be congratulated again on this publication.

Council has been very pleased to support the Society in the production of this book and, I commend it to everyone whether they be interested in the early history of the town of Maclean or they simply want to peruse a very interesting book.

John E. Harvey, Shire President, Maclean Shire Council.
