Hanly Family of Brierfield. Settled in the area August 1878

Kindly contributed by Margaret Hayes, written by her mother Rose Hanly.

This is a history of the Hanly family of Brierfield (formerly Spicketts Creek) on the south Arm of the Bellinger River (now called the Kalang River). It was hand written by Rosie Crossingham (grand daughter of Daniel Hanly who settled Brierfield) when asked by one of her daughters Margaret Crossingham. The date of its being written is uncertain, but about 1986. Margaret was kind enough to give me a photocopy.

Editors notes are {enclosed}. Illegible omissions are shown .........

My grandfather Hanly {Daniel Hanly, b 1840 Roscommon Ireland} came from Ireland in the early 1860's (Eighteen Sixties). He came to the Hunter River and then on to the .......... He selected a hundred acres of land called "Red Bank". {This property was probably in the Port Macquarie area, possibly at Rawdon Island as Daniel Hanly and Margaret Danaher were married in port Macquarie on 11 May 1865} He cleared it all up, felled the trees, and burned off, and it was really a beautiful property. {Rosie was not born at this time} So, he put it all in with corn, just by digging it with a hoe. they had no ploughs in those days, so they put their crops in by hoe digging. They called it "hoe corn".

When land owners in those days selected, they mostly put up a bark hut to live in and had a certain time to build a house on the property. An English Officer used to go around and inspect the property to see if that law was carried out. And when he saw my grandfather's beautiful crop and farm he said, "This property belongs to me". He said he pegged it out many years before. He took the property and all Grandfather's work, and in the end, Grandfather had to move out. So he and Grandma and their five children {then} walked all the way to the Bellinger. When they came to a river or big creek they had to find a suitable log and push it into the water, and paddle across with their few belongings, and a fifty pound bag of flour. So they would have several trips across the waters.

It took them a week to travel from the McLeay to the Bellinger, and grandfather selected the first property that had been selected on the South Arm of the Bellinger River. Grandfather was a school teacher before he left Ireland, so he opened up the first little post office on the South Arm and he called the Post Office "Brierfield", after thier home in Ireland. At that time the district was called "Spicketts Creek", but as more setlers came and the land was all cleared the whole district became known as Brierfield, and still is today. {See the map linked from sitemap page of the website. Brierfield is South East of Bellingen, towards Urunga.}

Dad was twelve years old when his father settled at Brierfield, and when he was twenty one he selected a property adjoining his father's farm. So Dad cleared all his over three hundred acres, and put it all in hoe corn. Before the corn was fit to pull, a big flood came and washed it all away. Dad built a nice little house on the farm, and when he was twenty four he married my mother, who was Rose McNally of Bellingen.

Her father came from Armagh in Ireland when he was a young man and selected a property at North Bellingen, on the main Bellinger River. He grew corn.

And in those days a young Russian came to Bellingen. It was called Boat Harbour in those days, because the young Russian put up a mill and cut timber and built the first (or I think the only) boats that were built on the Bellinger.

A few years after he was in Bellingen he married Mary Anne McNally, my mother's sister, so he became my Uncle Fred Doepel. uncle built a couple of big punts to take his timber he cut to Urunga to meet the ships that took the timber to Sydney.

When my Dad's hoe corn crop was washed away the two years running, Dad got a job on uncle's punt, taking the timber to Urungato meet the ship. And the ship used to bring all the food stuffs (like tea sugar flour) and materials etc on its trip from Sydney to Urunga. And Dad would put them on the punt and deliver the goods to the farmers. Each farmer would have a wharf for his goods to be loaded on to. in those days the punts had to be poled all teh way down to Urunga with the timber, and back to Bellingen and all the ships were sailing ships carried along with sails and the wind.

In about the year Nineteen Hundred my uncle built a steam ship nd it was named the S.S. Bellinger. He built about five or six sailing ships. one was called the Violet Doepel, one the Selma Doepel and one the Alma Doepel. he called most of his ships after his daughters. The Alma Doepel was in action in World War Two as a landing barge for the troops to and on the islands or beaches. i heard lately that an American bought the Alma Doepel, and had it all done up like new, and that it ran aground and was broken up. {The Alma Doepel was in Darling Harbour, Sydney during the 1988 Bicentennial Celebrations and a grand daughter of Fred Doepel was married aboard.}

Dad's uncle Denny Dannaher, got the contract to put the Dorrigo cutting in so people could travel from Bellingen to Dorrigo and Armadale. so he got Dad to go to work for him, with his horse and cart. The whole cutting was done with pick and shovel, and Denny paid dad seven and six a week for himself and hishorse and cart. Dad had to buy feed for the horse out of that so he didn't have much to keep Mum, and at that time he had two children. They worked from before sunrise till dusk every day in the week. When the contract for the cutting was done, they built the bridges. When that was all done Dad bought a team of bullocks and hauled timber from off his farm to the Brierfield wharf, where they were picked up by the punts and taken to the mill.

My two eldest brothers always worked in the bush cutting logs for Dad till they were old enough to have a team of bullocks for themselves. And Dad bought cows and all us girls milked the cows. In those days we had to separate all the milk, and we used to send the cream to a butter factory in East Bellingen. i used to put the cows in the bails for the older girls when I was five till I was seven, then I had to help milk.

When Grandfather Hanly died, Dad bought his selection or farm as it was then, off Grandma, and she took the younger members of her family to live in Sydney. We used to rent one farm and we all worked the other farm.

There was a school, Post Ofice and dance hall, all on our farm. We all played music. Dad and the six boys and the oldest girl all played the violin, and the women folk all played the piano. In those days the only entertainment was house parties and a couple of dances a week in the local hall. They were much more happy days because we all had to make our own fun. There were no wirelesses or TV's. When the wireless and TV came people knocked off their musical evenings and card evenings and people stayed home more, and so it ended the good times we all used to have having a sing-song around the piano. And we didn't even have as many dances. So now you know how the other half lived.

When my eldest brother Harry was old enough, he selected a property on the Lower South Arm of the Bellinger. he used to haul his logs to Martell's Wharf for the punt to pick up and take to the mill. when Harry was about twenty years old, Dad was so pleased with how well he played the violin that he sent him to the Conservatorium in Sydney to further his musical career. So Harry taught music and also had a hire car in Bellingen and Inverell. He married Rita Forbes from Inverell.

As time went by and the Nineteen Thirty depressions was on, no one could afford to have their children taught music. Harry moved to Sydney. he is now {in 1986} ninety four years of age. And he still plays the violin and he drove his car until he was ninety one years of age, and had his sixtieth driving licence. And had never had an accident (not even a bump) in all that Sixty years!

Frank still kept on bush work till he got too sick to work, so passed away in his sixties. Mick had a banana plantation for years at John's River on one of the Three Brother Mountains, "The Middle Brother" as it was called. One week he didn't turn up in Taree with his bananas, to our sister where he always went for dinner when he was in town. She wondered why and rang her son up, who lived near Mick's plantation, to go and see if Mick was sick, so Cyril {McGovern} went to Mick's house and could see the fire hadn't been lit for some time, and so he went to the plantation and found poor old Mick's body. He had a heart attack and died with his banana knife still in his hand. Mick was also in his sixties. Mick had never married so he had no one to notice he didn't come home. So that is how the other half lives.

My Mother had a wonderful foresight. One night at about one o'clock in the morning she sat up in bed, and said to Dad poor Mrs Matherson wants help. Mum was so upset. Dad said "you just had a bad nightmare, but Mum insisted that Mrs Matherson was at the foot of her bed asking for them to help her. It was early in November and we had over a week's constant heavy rain. The Matherson family lived in a marquee on the other side of Spikkets Creek so as to be handy for water for their use and washing etc. Any way, the flood came up, and Mr Matherson's sister lived on a hill on the same property and as the waters got higher the sister and her husband went down to the creek and her husband went down to the creek just in time to see the marquee washed away and Mr and Mrs Matherson Jack Mary and Kathleen were washed away in the flood and drowned at .... exact time my Mother saw Mrs Matherson at the foot of her bed asking for help.

{Clare Smith (William Behan + Mary Foster/Supple > Elizabeth Behan + John Matheson > Annie Matheson + Charles Edmund Smith > Elizabeth Clare Smith) says that it was Angus Sharkey who went to help, the Mathesons. A son William was in hospital at the time and survived. An aboriginal fellow spent three days diving for the bodies before they were found. They were buried at Bowraville. The deaths were subject of an article in the Bellingen papers.}

One morning a few years after that Mum came out of her bed room crying and didn't want to have any breakfast. And Dad asked her if she was sick or what was wrong. Mum said her sister Alice was dead or very ill. Dad said it is only that you haven't seen her for a while as she lived on the Nambucca and we lived in the Bellinger district. Dad said have some breakfast and I will take you over to see her but Mum said but I saw her coffin, it had a very big white flower on it. And before breakfast was over, the neighbours boy who kept the little post office came with a telegram to say Aunty Alice had taken a stroke. so Mum and Dad went over to her place and she was unconscious and died in a few days without regaining consciousness.

When Aunty Alice was a girl in north Bellingen she planted a big white Magnolia tree in front of their house, and every time she went over to Bellingen she used to call at the old farm, that had then been rented to a family named Breathweit, and she always told Mrs Brethweit that she grew the tree when she was a young girl. And the tree was out in flower when aunty died, and Mrs Brethweight {3 different spellings have been used} sent a big flower and it was put on the coffin, and as my Dad said years after Mum had passed away, it was exactly as Mum had told him the morning she was so upset and we got the bad news.

Mum was the second daughter of Grandfather and Grandma McNally of North Bellingen, where she was born on the farm. In those days a midwife came to the homes and delivered the child at home, in time the government took a portion of Grandfather's back paddock and made a cemetery out of it. So Mum was born and buried on the one farm. She only moved to Brierfield when she married and was married fifty years. And she lived at Brierfield for that fifty years.
Dad was the oldest of a family of Thirteen children, Six boys and seven girls. My eldest sister Violet when she got married, she and her husband selected a farm out of Eumundi about a hundred miles North of Brisbane. they put in a big banana plantation and grew paw-paws and pineapples. They had eight children, two lots of twins. and Violet worked cutting and carrying and packing fruit till the time arrived for the midwife to come and deliver the baby, and would be back on the job in a week after, taking the new baby and other children with them to the packing shed.

One night about midnight Violet was wakened up by a strange noise in the baby's cot. It was a very large carpet snake. it had the baby slimed all over and its arm swallowed to the shoulder. So they killed the snake, bathed the baby, and her arm never suffered any effect from the experience.

When Mum was a young girl, her grand father and Grandma lived very close so the whole family took out a selection each joining together, and so they had hundreds of acres of land as there was a big family.

One day my Mothers Grandma didn't come home for her dinner, and she had been working in the cornfield. So they went looking for her. They found her body with a mark around her neck, where she had been strangled. At that time there were very few settlers, and still a lot of wild blacks. They think Grandma caught the black stealing the corn to eat it, and strangled her.
But I always think, and I still do think that a whip snake twisted around her neck, and when she had died just crawled away again. The case was left as an open verdict. So we will never really know how she was strangled
.

Frederick Cecil Hanly (b.1909)

As printed in a local Urunga paper about the date of Cecil's 90th birthday, 23 June, 1999 - 90 Years & Still going Strong

Well known and well respected local identity Cecil Hanly turns the grand age of 90 on Wednesday June 23 and to celebrate Cec is having two birthday parties. We have much pleasure in bringing to you a small part of Cecil's life.

Cec, a farmer for most of his life, was born at Brierfield on June 23, 1909, and is the 10th in a family of 12. He tells us his story...
"I was educated at a little school at Brierfield with my main subjects being arithmetic, mental arithmetic, writing and spelling and I was Dux of the Class in those four subjects every year until I finished school. I left school at age 14 as did most country children in those days to help on the farm.

"When I was 20 I was the only child left and the farm has become too large to care for so we left to go to a smaller, poorer property, still at Brierfield. From there I started helping my brothers in the bush, cutting logs and helping with what they call "blue tonguing", tying logs with ropes and helping to bring these from the bush. I did this for about 2 years.

"Things were rather tough in those days, with butter selling for less than a shilling a pound. My dad had two large farms leased out to tenants, but they couldn't afford to pay any rent and after two years they got so far in debt with all the shops around that my dad offered to me to take on the old farm "Brierfield". This name my grandfather brought from Ireland and that's where the whole district - the school, the hall, everything - got its name, because they were within that property.

"When I was 25 years of age I took on the running of Brierfield and I worked that for my dad until I was just on 39 years of age. It was dairying, pigs and growing potatoes and maize. After 14 years my health became bad and I had to give it away.

"This caused me to put a share farmer on the property and I myself moved into Bellingen. this is where I met my 'lady' Una who was, at that time, working as a dental mechanic.

"After two years and no sign of children we decided to adopt a daughter, and then two years following my wife did become pregnant. We had four children all up.

"During this time I worked as a green keeper with Bellingen Bowling Club, but didn't get it as easy as they do these days! I had to manhandle the roller, a great big huge steel roller full of water, pushing it back and forward across the greens. Another tool I used was a spike roller - a large implement with steel spikes which punched thousands of holes in the green to let the air and water soak through. I should have had a draught horse to pull it but, unfortunately, there were none available.

"After two years I went on a tour around Australia with some mates. Una, my wife, encouraged me to go as she knew there would probably not be another chance coming along and also it was not her idea of a holiday travelling in the back of an old truck, sleeping under a tarpaulin at night. We travelled up to Darwin, and down through Central Australia, Cooper Pedy and one day we found ourselves right in the middle of the Woomera Rocket Range. That was a funny one, we must have taken a wrong turn. the officials were quite upset as a couple of us had cameras. After we explained what and who we were we were allowed to leave. From there we finished up at Port Augusta near Adelaide. Then back through Broken Hill, Armidale, Tamworth to the top of the mountain.

"While we were away, unknown to me, the '50 flood had taken place so when we got back there was four foot of water through my farm and there was hardly a fence left standing. At this stage I had a young married couple share farming the property but they were so upset at the loss of stock and money that I paid him his price and took the place off his hands so I could renew all the fences. After this I took another sharefarmer back onto the property and sold them half the stock and plant to give them a greater interest and respect for what they're looking after.

"Shortly after this I took up a job delivering the Sydney Morning Herald which arrived in Coffs Harbour by plane. As I had a lovely new Chevrolet Utility I was asked if I would be interested in going into partnerships. I did but it got rather monotonous seven days a week, getting up at 5am delivering every paper through Sawtell, Bonville, Repton, Bellingen, drop the Dorrigo papers then have breakfast. Down again to Urunga and over to Nambucca Heads and Macksville. If it was too wet for the plane to drop papers at Kempsey, we did that and then back to Bowraville, over the mountains and back to Bellingen. That was our run every day.

"When this job folded I was approached by Mr Pollack, the then manager of the Hammond & Wheatley store, who said he was having great difficulty in getting a decent delivery man, one that would bring back the correct money. I discussed this with Una who said 'I suppose it's alright'. at that time I was earning Ł12 a week. This job lasted me for 11 years, during which time I got to know every gate and backyard in the Bellinger Shire and Urunga, Valery and Hydes Creek. I could have done it blindfolded!

"Then I moved to working at Wills Mills at Thora using a huge new all electronic bandsaw. I stayed there for two years and then went back on to the farm for a further 14 years where my wife and I raised our family.

"It was in 1969, when I had just turned 70, that I finally gave farming away. We were fortunate enough to be able to divide the farm into six sections and sell them all, so Una and I were able to move into our unit here in Urunga which was being built at the time of our sale. In those days your word was your bond. So when I looked at the unit and said I wanted to buy it, the builder didn't want a deposit, just told me to pay him when I had the money. I was able to pay him cash a short time later.

" I have lived here for the past 20 years. una passed away just on 10 years ago now I am alone except for my youngest son, Raymond, who is living with me at present.

"Since I have lived here I have done gardening around the place, up until two years ago when they put a contractor in charge. This wasn't done successfully and the place 'went to the dogs'. When I was in charge I even won a trophy for best kept garden, that was in 1990. I think I shall be doing it for quite a while yet" he said.

Not looking anywhere near his ninety years, Cec has lived a full and satisfying life and even now still enjoys one of his other loves - fishing. Cec is the state's oldest active member of the NSW Amateur Fishing Clubs' Association, receiving a certificate to commemorate this occasion from the Urunga Amateur Anglers' Club, making Cec a very proud man. He has many a record for the biggest catch of the week, with his most recent prize catch being a 3.92 kg Mangrove Jack which he caught while fishing from the Bellinger River's South wall. Cec thinks nothing of going for an early morning walk along the wall, taking with him his old and trusty 'Ned Kelly' rod and line to see what fish are 'biting'.

Cec plans to live out the rest of his days continuing with his gardening, fishing and the occasional beer with the boys at the local club and spending time with neighbours and friends.

{Note: Cecil for many years acted as Power of Attorney for his sister in law Rita (Wife of Henry Daniel ("Harry")) who was in the Belarona Nursing home at Bellingen hospital until her death in 1999. He was having trouble keeping his driving licence, because of cataracts and was restricted to the route from Urunga to Bellingen and return to enable him to help Rita and his sister Ceil, also confined to Belarona Nursing Home at Bellingen. After a cataract operation, Cecil's sight was restored, giving him a new lease of life. Farming is in his blood. a friend had a few acres on Newry Island. The friend would run the rotary hoe over ti and from there on Cecil would plant and grow pumpkins, melons and other vegetables, all by hand. he was still doing this at the age of 88!!}

Michael Hanly (1866-1948) Obituary

Courier-Sun, Tuesday, September 28, 1948
Obituary
Mr Michael Hanly

The death of Mr Michael Hanly of Brierfield, at he age of 82 years, has removed from the Bellinger River district another of its grand old pioneers, and a colourful, genial personality.

The late Mr Hanly, who passed away at the Bellinger River District Hospital on Friday, 17 September, after the illness which followed a severe and fatal stroke of some fifteen weeks ago, previously suffered very little illness.

Born on the Hastings River in 1866, he came with his parents, the late Mr and Mrs Daniel Hanly, to the South Arm of the Bellinger River when he was a boy of twelve. For seventy years he resided continuously at Brierfield.

The Hanly family was the first to settle on that section of the river, and their farm selection, which they called "Brierfield", later gave its name to the area. At that time Bellingen (or Boat Harbour) on the North Arm had not been founded.

Clearing the virgin land, the large and growing Hanly family commenced maize growing, one of the main industries of the new land.

At the age of 21 years, the subject of this notice, Michael Hanly, selected his own property and pioneered, cleared, fenced and established the 300 acre farm which is now occupied by Mr E. C. Moody.

In his teens and early twenties, Mr Hanly carried out the duty, with Mr Albert Cook, of punting corn down the river to Bellinger Heads and bringing back provisions for the settlers. The punt had to be poled all the way. They also travelled with the punt over portions of the lower North Arm, then becoming settled. Mr Hanly was a keen sportsman in those younger days. At one stage he held the high jump and hop, step and jump records for the Bellinger, and for many years was a keen cricketer.

After taking up his own selection, Mr Hanly engaged in maize growing, but big losses of crops through floods compelled him to give up this avenue. He then commenced work on the shire roads, and later, as a bridge and culvert builder was responsible for very sound constructions. Two bridges built by him, some 50 years ago, are still in use on the Bellingen-Bowraville Road, near what is known as Keane's Farm. He also constructed many Nambucca Bridges. He worked with his uncle, Mr Dinny Danaker (sic: Danaher), who had the first contract for the construction of the Dorrigo cutting. the contract was not a financial success, however, and the late Mr Hanly often related, with humour, that he came off the job, after twelve weeks work, with a pair of new blucher boots - all that he got for his labour. He next engaged in timber hauling, and for 17 years worked a team of bullocks in the Brierfield area, before taking up dairying....

After the death of his father, at the age of 56 (the late Daniel Hanly's headstone still stands in the old cemetery near the present bowling green at Bellingen), the late Michael Hanly took over the farm "Brierfield", his mother and other members of the family going to live in Sydney. He later purchased the farm from his mother, working one farm and leasing the other, for about 18 years.

The late Mr Hanly was married at the age of 24, to Rose McNally, of North Bellingen, who predeceased him some 8 years ago. They reared a large family. during late years, Mr Hanly senr., had lived with his son Cecil on the farm "Brierfield", which Cecil acquired from his father about three years ago. some twelve months ago the son was compelled to give up dairying through ill-health and shortage of labour and they then moved to Bowra Road. For the fifteen weeks prior to his death, Mr Hanly was confined to hospital in a helpless condition.

As stated before, the late Mr Hanly was a happy personality, and right up till a few months ago played the violin with a loving touch. Down the years he has supplied music, often in the company of his brother, Den, at countless dances and functions in this and the Nambucca districts. He was Pastures Protection officer right up till the time of his death.

A family of six sons and six daughters survive. The sons are Harry (Ryde), Frank (Brierfield), Mick (Stewart's River), Reg (Sydney) and Cecil (Bellingen); and the daughters are Mrs T. Ulrick (Brisbane), Mrs P. L. McGovern (Stewart's River), Mrs Frank McKenzie (Sydney) and Mrs O. Mulheron (Sydney).

Also surviving are four brothers and seven sisters: Den (Strathfield), Pat (New Zealand), Dan (Repton), Tim (Concord) ; Mrs W. Foley (Nambucca Heads), Mrs J. Mansel (sic: Maunsell) (Bonalbo), Mrs A. Lee (Coogee) and Misses Mary, Nora and Cecilia (Coogee), and Gertie (Katoomba). One brother (Frank) predeceased him.

Members of his family as well as some of the brothers and sisters living in other districts, were present for the funeral on Sunday, when Father Ryan conducted services at St Mary's Church and at the Bellingen cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion. Mr E. C. White attended to the funeral arrangements.

Reginald Timothy Hanly (1911-1974) Life Story

Buried Northern Suburbs Cemetery, North Ryde, Sydney, with Amy (nee Keys) in Catholic lawn, Block 7 Grave 57.  He always said he only progressed at school to "a piece of chalk and a slate".  Worked during the depression shovelling gravel?

He was in the Survey Corp during WW2 mainly as a truck driver and was in Darwin but not when it was bombed. He had dermatitis from his Army service and it was a terrible torment to him for much of his later life. He eventually got a partial war service pension, then 100%, then after many years was TPI (Totally and Permanently Incapacitated).

Worked as a taxi driver with his brother Harry after WW2

He worked as a truck driver and was almost killed when a barrel fell on him about 1953. During these times of ill health, the family was assisted by other family members and local groups. The family took a boarder at their Mellor Street Meadowbank home. He was a fireman at Ryde by the name of Duncan .

Amy's father John Keys lived with the family on and off for a number of years. Sometimes he stayed with Amy's sister Marie and her husband Phillip Waugh at Figtree near Wollongong. He was "6 foot 6 inches in his socks" and was eventually unable to live with the family and went into a nursing home at Chatswood, NSW.

Reg was a spray painter and talented colour matcher, even on the most difficult metallic finishes.

He worked at J E Rowan at Epping about 1956 and again in 1960, Berry's Bay about 1958,  and Aub's Smash Repairs at Artarmon. He had to give it away because of chest problems and dermatitis. He then had a job as a profile cutter operator in Higginbotham Road, Gladesville.

Reg was a keen fisherman. Often fished with his brother Dinny in an open boat with outboard from La Perouse where Dinny lived for many years in a caravan. He also enjoyed fishing at Coal and Candle Creek on the Hawkesbury River.

After the finalisation of the McNally estate, instead of getting the kitchen fixed as he had promised his wife, he bought a boat "Sturdee". This had an unreliable Alfa Craig 4 cylinder which always broke down just before the Harbour Bridge. He replaced it with a single cylinder Simplex. He and his son Paul were "outside" when 2 sailors were washed off the bow of a Destroyer and an Asian student was washed off rocks at Narrabeen in what were described as 50 foot waves, all in a 16 foot half cabin launch! He once went out for an afternoons fishing and rang from Wollongong at midnight. He eventually lost the boat 7 miles off Barrenjoey light house. He was broken down, was picked up by a BHP freighter the Iron Monarch and was deposited at Newcastle. This earnt him an article in the Sydney papers!  The boat sank in mountainous seas while under tow. he bought another boat with the insurance money but the adventures were less as his health declined.

Reg was a keen violinist and appeared on talent quests on radio 2UW. He was a member of the Joyspreaders, a group which gave concerts in orphanages and homes for the intellectually disabled. His son Paul often accompanied him. The annual concert was held a couple of times at the Hall at Meadowbank Boys High School, about 100 yards from the Mellor Street family home. He also appeared in talent quests at Penrith Leagues Club, playing novelty violin (with a dowel, blindfolded, by ear) and the saw (an ordinary carpenter's saw). he owned a Colin Mezzin and a Stradivarius. (It may well have been a copy, but Reg always called it "the Strad" and other family members did not disagree with him. He also did a tour of Northern NSW in a country and western band called the Rock Jim Jordan show. It was not a financial success and was always referred to as: "the Rocky Jim Jordan show...no dough!" Reg and a friend Jack Fisher composed a piece of music "Untrue" for which copyright was registered in 1958.

Some of the cars Reg owned after his marriage to Amy included a Buick La Salle straight 8, Vanguard, Skoda, Ford Prefect, Peugeot 203C, Peugeot 403 and 403B, Vauxhall Victor, and Morris 1100

Reg looked after Amy after her diagnosis with cancer. He only lived about 20 months after her death and was hospitalised with lung cancer and died at Lady Davidson Hospital, Turramurra, NSW.

Reg's only son Paul married Narelle Bock, daughter of Jack and Edna (nee Hickey) Bock of Concord West on 7 May 1975, the first  anniversary of Reg's death.
