  Amanda's poem

It all started with this photo in 2008
A picture of an old lady, with no Christian name or date
Only the words "What do you think about it not bad for over
seventy eh" written on the back, and I thought, WHO?
Someone else had added - Great Grandmother Foster, and then in brackets
(Grandma Eastwood’s mother) – which gave me a clue

My curiosity was piqued and with these facts in hand
I began to find out about her life in a foreign land
A fire burned within and the more I discovered, the more I looked
And without even realising it, I was well and truly hooked

And so it was that night after night
I would sit at my computer until it was nearly light
My thirst for knowledge about my family tree
Does not stop and I will never be free

But I love what I do and I enjoy the hunt
I am a family detective who takes a punt
Digging and delving, following each lead
Trying to be patient, until I succeed

Sometimes though I will hit a brick wall,
But with persistence and determination I continue to trawl
Through the mountain of information available to me,
Until the day you find me smiling with glee

Because I have crashed through the barriers and broken down the walls
Even though I know, I will have many more falls
So I sift and I sort, fiction from fact
And talk to relo’s with good humour and tact

Asking them questions about my ancestors
Were they famous or just common jesters
Did they work or were they lazy as hell
And in what locations did they dwell

I have met many people that I may never have known
And as a result my family tree has grown
I now have people from all walks of life
And the stories and paperwork in my office are rife

But I love what I do and I enjoy the hunt
I am a family detective who takes a punt
Digging and delving, following each lead
Trying to be patient, until I succeed
