CARANDINI: the maternal grandfather of my half-brother, Christopher, had more Italian titles than you could poke a stick at. He was the 11^th Marquis of Sarzono and Cortogno, Count Carandini, Patrician of Modena and Noble of Bologna. His Christian names were Frank James. How did this come about? The only clue I have is that he was born in Sydney on May 20, 1847. What was his family doing here? I have heard mention of an opera company, but that thickens the plot even further. He joined the British Army in a cavalry regiment, 5^th Lancers, and went to India where he married. His title of marquis was recognised for use in England by George V. Can anyone shed any light on what seems to be a rather extraordinary story? Nicolas Lee, PO Box 2309, Bromhof, 2154, South Africa (Published 01-02MAY2004) |
