SHIRT: Joseph Arthur b Aug 16 1887, Workington, Cumberland, England. He was the son of Ellis Shirt (1862, d 1893) and Sarah Ann MARTIN. Ellis and his brother Arthur( 1865 d 1923) moved from the Dronfield Woodhouse/Holmesfield area of North East Derbyshire during the 1880s when the firm Cammell moved to Workington. After his father's death in1893, Joseph Arthur's mother married again, but she was already separated from her second husband when she enrolled Joseph at the Bluecoat Hospital School, Liverpool in 1899. Records show he became, at the age of 14, an apprentice at either Holme and King or Messrs. Cammell and Co. He later disappears from all British records. I suspect he emigrated to Australia and I have seen an unlabeled photograph that suggests he worked on the building of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It is possible he changed his surname to SHEARD. He married Annie HUGHES (born c. 1848), a schoolteacher, and resided at Rossgarron, Magherafelt. They had eight sons and one daughter. The daughter, Nancy, was my grandmother. Six of the sons, John, James, William, Charles, Richard and Henry, emigrated to Australia between, I believe, 1898 and 1912. Only one of them, Charles, ever came back to Ireland, making two trips in the 1950s. On the first of these trips, in 1954, his wife, Mary Ann (Martha), died and is buried in the grounds of St. Swithin's Church at Magherafelt. They had two sons, John and Robert. After her death, my great-grandmother, Annie Stewart (nee Hughes), decided to go to Australia (in 1914) to visit her six sons. She was to stay for six months but World War 1 broke out and she was unable to get home. In 1918 she had a riding accident and sustained a leg fracture. She never fully recovered and died in 1923.
