Julia Cotterdown

Julia COTTERDOWN was born in 1812 (calculated) in Bantry Bay, Cork, Ireland. Various researchers record her as being born in 1818 but she arrived as a convict in 1834, aged 22 years; giving a birthdate of c.1812. This anomaly is still to be resolved. Julia's parents have been recorded by researcher Susan MORTON as John and Margaret BOLTON of County Cork (Bantry Bay) but the source and reliability of this information is unknown. If this is true, then her birthname was BOLTON which suggests a marrige before she was transported as that happened under the COTTERDOWN name.

Julia was convicted in 1833 in Westminster, England possibly in the City of Westminster . She was sentenced to 7 years transportation for an unknown crime. She immigrated to Sydney, NSW, Australia from England in 1834. She was transported to Australia on board the "Buffalo".

In 1834 she was a servant in Port Macquarie, NSW, Australia. She was assigned to Stephen and this is how they met. She married Stephen PARTRIDGE on 18 March 1834 at the St Thomas Church of England in Port Macquarie.

Julia had been assigned to him as a nursemaid which contravened the law which forbade single female convicts being assigned to single men.

Julia's name has been recorded variously as Julia COTTERDOWN, Julia Cotter DOWN and Julia COTTER (nee DOWN). At this stage it hasn't been determined which is correct although if her birthname was BOLTON then the latter is clearly not the case.

Julia died on 26 May 1889 in Port Macquarie. She was buried on 8 May 1889 in the General Cemetery, Church of England Section in Port Macquarie.

Stephen PARTRIDGE was the son of Thomas PARTRIDGE ( - ) and Jane OSMOND ( - ). He and Julia COTTERDOWN had the following children :
John William PARTRIDGE (1835 - 1884)
Richard Stephen PARTRIDGE (1836 - 1881)
Margaret Marion PARTRIDGE (1838 - 1842)
Sarah Julia PARTRIDGE (1839 -   )
Ann Caroline PARTRIDGE (1842 -   )
Margaret Marion Susannah PARTRIDGE (1844 -   )
