Belmont in the News

Friendship Chronicle, May 5, 1880, Volume 1, Number 1.

Mr. Isaac Willets is enlarging his trotting track and has fifteen men and five teams employed upon it.

The advantages of Belmont as a county site was one of the themes discussed by the legal fraternity during the Court vocations last week.

Sheriff Gillies, it is said, will present a public fountain to the village. The main body of the fountain will be a group of statuary illustrating the song of Bobbie Burns “Willie brewed a peek o' maut."”

       Belmont, May 3, 1880. L.

Friendship Chronicle, May 12, 1880, Volume 1, Number 2.

Mrs. Della Knight is visiting here from Toledo, Ohio.

Mr. Elmer Willets is home from College for the purpose of experimenting with and studying the various phases of measles.

Mr. C. S. Whitney and Mr. Isaac Willets are each putting in a fountain, we hail with pleasure each improvement in our little old-played-out town (so called) that isn't to have even the county seat. “To him that hath shall be given, and to him that hath not shall be taken even that he hath.”

The Rev. Mr. Cummings filled the pulpit of the M.E. Church last Sabbath very acceptably, a collection was to be taken for the Freedman's aid society, and the Dr. gave an extended account of the state of affairs in the city of Charleston, S. C., where he resided during the war, and from which place he has now many correspondents who keep him informed of the progress of the colored population, he says the negroes are filling the highest expectations of friends who are interested in them.

To people visiting our town we would especially call attention to our Cemetery and invite them to take a walk in its grounds. It is but a short distance from the center of the town, beautifully laid out and contains many fine monuments also two of the finest pieces of statuary in this or surrounding counties. Neither should they neglect to take a boat ride, and see the numerous pretty islands covered with trees, flowers, vines and ferns. We can truly say our little Genesee is a beauty and showed her taste for the picturesque by cutting up pranks to the disgust of land owners, but to the delight of those fond of boating.

Belmont May 10.
