Since the demise of the Herald Tribune, it has been known as just The Fresh Air Fund) for bringing city children to the country in the summer. The first children (9) went to Sherman, PA where Willard was a minister. He left the ministry and personally built The Fresh Air Fund over the next 30 years until he retired. Early in the life of The Fund, children went to Franklin, NY. Two memorial tablets were erected-"..one in Franklin, New York, where he was born (and is buried) and one in Sherman, Pennsylvania where where his great life-work was done".

4. ELVIRA BEDA 7 PARSONS (JOSEPH PORTER6, TIMOTHY5, JOHN (LT.)4, TIMOTHY3, SAMUEL2, JOSEPH (CORNET)1)1 3 was born April 20, 1826 in Meredith, Delaware Co., New York3, and died December 10, 1882 in Long Eddy, Delaware Co., New York3. She married JEPTHA KELLAM July 23, 1846 in Merideth, Delaware Co., New York, son of JACOB KELLAM and HANNAH PIERCE. He was born September 21, 1820 in Little Equinunk,Wayne Co., Pennsylvania, died February 05, 1889 in Long Eddy, Delaware Co., New York.

Notes for ELVIRA BEDA PARSONS: Elvira was born in Merideth, New York, raised there, in nearby Franklin. She was educated at the Franklin Academy. On the 1850 census, the family can be found living in Delaware Co., where her husband, Jeptha, had purchased some land. He was from a rafting family, his family having established the rafting on the Delaware River 2 generations prior. They then lived in Long Eddy, New York, where he was both a farmer, and a rafter--referred to in the Historys of the Rafting as "Jep Kellam", was considered quite a steersman.

There was a period when Elvira was alone with several small children, she didn't even know for certain where he was. her letters to her sister in law, Barilla Kellam of Philadelphia are in the possession of a descendant, Sheila Spencer Stover. They show her to be well educated, capable, above all, devoted and patient, with a delightful sense of humor and enjoyment of pranks. Elvira looked after her home, garden, infant childlren, friends without reported/recorded complaint.

Jeptha was gone about a year--the family has long speculated he went west to avoid the Civil War---he did return, they had more children, from all reports, "lived happily ever after", were quite devoted. An oil painting of Elvira belongs to another descendant, she looks a bit stern, but that was the method of doing things in the period, not her personality!!! She is buried in Long Eddy, Delaware Co., New York.

Notes for EDWIN SMITH PARSONS: Edwin was an artist and a teacher, taught in Treadwell, the Delaware Literary Institute in Franklin, may have been a teacher at Pen Yan Academy (besides Henry).

The "Parsons house" is three doors south on Center St. from Bush house in Franklin. Many of his paintings belong to several descendants of the family via the Kellams and Sheila Spencer Stover. He painted river scenes, pastoral depictions.

Edwin died at Arthur's home in Equinunk, his coffin had to be taken to Franklin part of the way by sleigh. He is buried in the Ouleout Cemetery in Franklin, NY in the "Parsons" plot. His wife, Elizabeth, who died when Isabella was 4 years old , is presumably buried in Cannonsville. Burials in the Cannonsville Cemetery were moved to Downsville Cemetery in the early 1950's when NYC Cannonsville Reservoir was built, flooding the town of Cannonsville.

More About EDWIN SMITH PARSONS: Burial: Ouleout Cemetery, Franklin, NY7

Notes for ELIZABETH ISABELLA MCGIBBON: Two different sources use Isabella or Louise as the middle name. Isabella Parsons Bush stated that her mother was called Isabella at times. (Her mother died when she was 4 years old.) She was presumably buried in Cannonsville. Burials in the Cannonsville Cemetery were moved to Downsville Cemetery in the early 1950's when NYC Cannonsville Reservoir was built, flooding the entire town of Cannonsville.

She died when Isabella was 4 years old and brought up by aunts Kate & Janet. At one place in family lore, her birth was shown as Aug. 1934

His marriage to Jean Hegan had no children.

Notes for ISABELLA BELFRAGE PARSONS: Isabella's mother died when she was 4 years old. She was brought up in Cannonsville and Equinunk, Pa. by Aunt Kate (until she moved to California), then by Aunt Janet.

She was valedictorian at Pen Yan Academy (NY) in 1894 where her uncle Henry Parsons taught. She then went to Europe for 6 mos with uncles Willard & Henry. Isabella was one of the founding members of the "Merry Delvers" in Canonsville, a literary society whose full name was "Merrily Delving into books". The Deposit Historical Society has their minutes.

She and Junius lived in East Orange from approximately 1910 on. They kept the Center St. house (across Center St. from Wakeman Ln) and the "Bush stores" in Franklin, NY after Junius' father James Clark died. The house was used as a summer home for Isabella. Junius and Isabella , their daughters (and later families) would visit during the summer (except during World War II).

There is a Bush memorial plot in the Ouleout Valley Cemetery outside the Village of Franklin where James Clark Bush, his parents, Junius, Isabella and daughters Janet and Katherine (and spouses) are buried. Also in this cemetery is the Parsons plot where her uncles Willard (Fresh Air Fund founder) and Henry Parsons are buried. The "Parson's House" is on Center St., 3 houses west of the Bush house and on the same side.

1900 Census Town of Franklin, Dist. 2 Bush, Isabella b.1874 Burial: Ouleout Cemetery, Franklin, NY7

Census: 1900, Franklin, Delaware Co., NY

Notes for JUNIUS COMBS BUSH: Information from daughter, Janet Hunter was that he attended Sargent School in Poughkeepsie, however the only Sargent school in the area in late 1800's was in Beacon and was for girls. I suspect he attended the Eastman Business School in POK.

When he and Isabella were married, they honeymooned bicycling on a bicycle-built-for-two from Franklin to Schenectady.

His Franklin, NY house on Center St opposite Wakeman Ln. was built by his father for his mother, Augusta. James Clark Bush also built the "Bush stores" on Main St. in Franklin(1872), next to Post Office.

Junius (known as June) was a commission merchant initially. The family lived in Scranton, PA. His sales included grains, feed & hay from farms of NY and PA and sold in the NYC and metropolitan NJ area. They moved to East Orange, NJ when his sister Cora's husband died, to assist in caring for her family and with the decline of private feed merchants, he went to work for Fuller Brush Co in industrial sales up to his sudden death in April 1945.

He is mentioned (page 98) in a trout fishing episode on the Ouleout Creek with the author's father in a book of old Franklin stories by Maria Sherrill Miller Albrecht entitled "Franklin Lore" (1980).

1900 Census Town of Franklin, Dist. 2 Bush, James b.1867 (based on birth year, this incorrectly documented Junius)
