TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA SPORTS
1927-1928 TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA CHAMPIONSHIP BASKETBALL TEAM
Jim Estes sent us this picture of the Northern New York Champions. Jim's father, Bill, is second from left. Bill lived in the Dingman house on Dingman Point, and had the store there. Ice cream cones were five cents in the 1930s, and if you dropped yours in the dirt road outside the door, he graciously replaced it--free. Jim's Uncle John Estes, fourth from left, had a trucking business at the Bay. Jim's Uncle Fred Estes, sixth from left, ran the IGA store on Church Street, near the Corner Pharmacy, handy to the Upper Dock, where islanders could come for their groceries. Guilds Wallace, second from the right, also had a grocery store, the Red and White, occupying a building where E.A. Havens once ran a grocery on Walton Street, across from the cemetery. When one needed a pound of cheese, Mr. Wallace could whack off a piece from the giant wheel of cheddar cheese on the meat counter, coming within a half ounce of your request.
The team members are, from left to right:
Jim Blevins, Bill Estes, Jim Priestly, John Estes, Bill Ritter, Fred Estes, Red Sampson, Guilds
Wallace, Bill Aiken
Thanks to Jim for remembering us, and thanks to Jon Holcombe for making the picture fit!
