From 1989 Memories of the Thousand Islands Sun, by the gracious permission of Jeanne Snow, editor. The St. Lawrence Hotel, which was located on the corner of James and Church Streets in Alexandria Bay, dates back to the 1880s when it was known as the Hartman House and later as the Jefferson House. In the fall of 1928 the hotel was rebuilt and redecorated (lower photo). In 1939 the hotel and the Carleton Hotel, adjoining on James Street, were completely destroyed by fire. The Tassey block next to the Carleton was burned entirely, with the exception of its solid granite front, the Westcott block was two-thirds burned and the Snyder Boat Line garage was half burned.
