| BANCROFT HOMESTEAD, This is a
fine farm and a landmark in the town of Ledyard. It is owned by George
W. Bancroft. Postoffice address, Scipioville, New York, and consists
of two hundred and fifty acres. It is located at Barber's Corners on the
Scipioville road to Levanna, two miles distant, four miles from Aurora and
fourteen from Auburn. Stock raising and dairying are the principal resources;
the milk is taken to the skimming station at Scipioville, two miles east.
While the farm is well adapted to stock raising, it is also noted for its
soil products; much of attention is given to the culture of fruits of different
varieties. This model farm is supplied with the latest improvements in the
way of machinery, including a portable engine for grinding feed, and a threshing
machine for home use and the convenience of neighbors. Bancroft Homestead
commands a most picturesque view of Cayuga Lake for ten miles, and of Seneca
Lake to the west. The residence is supplied with water from never failing
springs and wells, and there is a spring brook which courses through the
entire length of the farm on the north side. There are twenty-five acres
of hard-wood timber, and three tenant houses on the farm, all in good repair.
The ownership record is as follows: H. Barber to W. R. Taber
, thence to William F. Bancroft, and from him to George W.
Bancroft, the present owner, who was born in 1858, and was married to
Miss Kitty H. Hussey in 1882. They have two sons and two daughters.
Mr. Bancroft is an enterprising citizen of his town and has held the
office of Supervisor for four years, and has filled other minor offices. |
