This so called Gamlin Cemetery (also spelled Gamlen) is said to be located
on the former Howlett Gamlin farm (now part of the large Weisbrod farm).
The Gamlin (later Weisbrod) house, recently torn down, was located at the
end of a long driveway on the south side of Bear Swamp Road about 1500
feet west of Nelson-Fenner Road. The existence of this cemetery is
known through the old lists and I was unable to find it in my searches
of 1994 and 1995. Local residents who had seen it years ago said
that it was no longer to be found. Gallup notes 3 stones in 1948,
but by 1960 Meyer, et al. found only two - that of William Ballou was missing.
The area in which the Gamlin Cemetery is said to have been located is not
far from the
Ballou
Cemetery and since both contain members of the Ballou family I wonder
if these stones had not once been part of that cemetery but had been removed
for who knows what reason. They are not presently among that set.
(Census records indicate that William Ballou was living there in 1830 [page
271 line 13] and he is not found on other census records.)
The Gamlin (or Gamlen) family
moved to this farm sometime before 1937 as they appear on the Rural Index
of that year. There were no Gamlins in Madison County according to
the
1917 Madison County
Rural Directory. Howlett (1893-1981), Iva B. (1889-1981) and
LaMoyne M. Gamlin (1926-1945) are buried in the
Perryville
Cemetery.
Those buried in the Gamlin Cemetery include:
Ballou, (maiden name), see Lillis Ballou Jones.
Ballou, Ruth, wife of William Ballou, died June 21, 1839, age
70 years 3 months.
Ballou, William, (stone was there in 1948, missing in 1960).
Jones, Lillis Ballou, daughter of William and Ruth Ballou, wife
of James Jones, died October 11, 18__, age not given.
