There are two old lists for this cemetery, an undated one made by the Skenendoah
Chapter, DAR, and second by Clezzie Gallup about 1948, and a third by Robert
V. Moyer in 1963. When these three lists were compared a large number
of discrepancies were found between them. When the field check was
made in 1994 an incredible number of mistakes were found on each of the
old lists and two more stones were found. Several stones on the Gallup
list are actually to be found in another cemetery! No pattern of
mistakes was apparent from my comparisons, each list having some mistakes
and only that of Robert V. Moyer being somewhat unreliable.
I was shown the cemetery
by Bruce Cary who lives across the road and who is the brother of Russ
Cary the property owner. The cemetery is located at the top of a
westward-pointing gravelly knoll. Although the point of land is triangular,
the cemetery does not exactly follow the landform. The east and south
sides are straight with a right angle corner, and the west and north sides
follow the edge of the land. A ridge of soil along the south and
east suggests that a fence had stood along these sides and the surrounding
land was tilled. The cemetery measures 50 feet on the east and about
90 feet on the south, but because the west and north sides are irregular
(and heavy undergrowth prevents accurate measurement) the area of the site
is only approximately calculated at 3500 square feet.
A large boulder, which Bruce
Cary likened to the Oneida stone as it seems shaped like a turtle, is on
the northeast part of the site (large stones such as this are found in
many places in the region and are not necessarily "Oneida Stones").
A rectangular pile of stone, indicating a stone covered burial spot, measuring
4 x 8 feet is located on the south side 30 feet from the southeast corner
(there are no markers with this feature). The graves are arranged
in rows that are about ten feet apart with the headstones on the west facing
west. Because of the heavy underbrush it was difficult to keep track
of the graves that were marked only by field stones, there being 15 to
20 in number. Several sunken areas were seen indicating graves, one
of which Mr. Cary told me was of recent origin (someone trying to dig up
a grave).
Three stones from the old
lists were not found in 1994: Lousia Anders, ______ Roberts, and Mariah
Young. Two additional stones were found in my 1994 survey: Greene
C. Brownson and Calpurnia C. Rice. A broken marble stone was found
standing at northwest corner, with the name gone, and only "daughter of"
still legible. This may be a fragment of the stone for Louisa Anders
or __________ Roberts.
