The original Town of DeRuyter, like the original Town of Cazenovia, was once much larger than it is today.  The Town of DeRuyter in 1800 included all of the present towns of DeRuyter and Georgetown and part of the present Town of Cazenovia in Madison County, and all of the present towns of Otselic, Lincklaen, German and Pitcher in Chenango County.  While this was an immense region of nearly 100,000 acres the 1800 census shows that there were only 68 families settled there with a total population of 290 inhabitants.  In comparing the census data to land records of the Holland Land Company and in the Chenango County Clerk's Office it has been found that not one of these families lived in the area now included in the towns of German and Otselic.  The population was also not spread very far across the rest of the landscape and is found to be clustered along the fertile low lands near the heads of the east and middle branches of Tioughnioga Creek, the larger Otselic River, and along the old Cayuga Road.  These areas are still where concentrations of population are found, namely the Village of DeRuyter and the hamlets or crossroad communities of Quaker Basin, Lincklaen, Union Valley, North Pitcher, Ufford Corners, Pitcher and German.  That is not to say that these were communities, but the seeds had been planted by the first settlers by this time.
Because the enumeration covers an area now broken into several townships I have also made an effort to identify the present township in which these individuals would now be located.  This was primarily achieved by comparing to the records of the Holland Land Company, but also in part by working with the early deeds recorded in the Chenango County Clerk's office.  In all but a few instances I was able to identify the lot on which these families lived.  By looking at the order in which these families are given the route taken by the census enumerator is clear.

Rather than present this information in a difficult-to-extract (and space-consuming) table I have spelled out the data accompanying the names.  I have taken the simple liberty of abbreviating the original wording of the age categories from the difficult to manage "of 10 and under 16" to read "10-15" which means the same thing.  In this Town of DeRuyter 1800 census there are no persons listed in the Free White, Other, or Slave categories.

The name presented in bold, Paddack, Aaron, at the beginning of each entry, are my interpretation of the correct name of the individual listed.  The name which appears in parentheses (Peadack, Aaron) is as it appears on the original list (in the original list the name is presented thus: "Aaron Peadack").  The need for computer searchability and organization in such as massive project has necessitated that I transpose the first and surnames: "Peadack, Aaron."
