This is a preliminary test to determine the feasibility of posting more of the Cazenovia, Fenner, and Nelson census lists (I have transcribed all of 1800, 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840 and the 1850 and 1855 heads of families, as well as many of the annual Holland Land Company census lists from 1800 to 1803 and 1806). Changes and additions will be made to this page as needs and circumstances dictate. If there are any questions or comments, please contact me, to let me know what you think. As time permits I will continue adding other years.
I began transcription of these census records as a way to identify the "catchment" of local cemeteries. First I found that there had never been a transcription of the hard to access enumerations from 1820, 1830, and 1840, and that the 1800, 1810 and 1820 transcripts, like the cemetery records I was studying, had many errors and incorrect names. It has been about 5 years since I started transcribing and checking these records and while I have them about 80% entered and about half proofed, the 1855 Fenner Population Schedules were fairly straight forward and I feel confident in the accuracy of the material that I am presenting here.
The original manuscript census
for 1855 can be found in the Madison County Clerk's Office, and I understand
that the original copies sent to the State Census Bureau were destroyed
after microfilming some years ago. There are very slight discrepancies
between some of the county-held originals and those that were microfilmed
(LDS filmed from wherever had the best copy and did not note its source)
but comparison between them was not made as the differences are minuscule.
The original copies of the
1855 census at the Madison County Clerk's Office contain the Fenner enumeration
but this transcription is entirely copied from the microfilms obtained
from the LDS through various Family History Centers.
I have made every effort
to assure correctness in the identification of the individuals listed,
but many questions remain and those that I am most unsure of are highlighted.
Rather than present this information in a difficult-to-extract (and space-consuming)
table, I have spelled out the data accompanying the names. The names
presented in bold, Jerome Laird, at the beginning of each entry,
are my interpretation of what appears on the census list, and the name
in parentheses (Elexander, Calvin) is as it appears on the original list.
In the original list the name is presented thus: "Jeroam Lard" (note the
misspelling) but the need for computer searchability and organization in
such as massive project has necessitated that also transpose the first
and surnames: "Lard, Jeroam."
