I need to write a papragraph or two about this tract
Nathaniel Locke 1793
In drawing this map I could not resolve one discrepancies between the
historic record (the original HLCo surveys, lot dimensions, and lot areas)
and the physical evidence (as found on the ground, shown in modern maps,
and in aerial photographs) and I found one apparent error in the topographic
maps:
-
The northern most row of lots is narrower north to south than it should
be. This row of lots should be of the same dimension as the lots
in the row below it. What I show here fully conforms to what is indicated
on later historic maps (Hunt Road does lie along the northern line of the
tract) and the field and woods edges and fence lines visible on aerial
photos and the topographic maps.
-
The wording of the act which created Madison County in 1806 clearly states
that the south line of the county ran westward from what is now the southwest
corner of the Town of Georgetown (SW corner of Otselic) and historic maps
(1875 Madison Co. and 1863 and 1875 Chenango Co.) also show this.
Contrary to this the USGS topographic maps, which I used as a base for
these plats, indicates that the county line runs along the original Great
Lot Lines. Whether this is an error on the part of USGS cartographers
or has been changed since the historic maps were drawn, I do not know.
