This is a record of the identifying marks of cattle kept by the Cazenovia Town Clerk to prove ownership in case of dispute.  Only the names of cattle owners are listed here as the crop marks are not of much historical value (Rush Marshall has compiled a copy of this with illustrations of the crop marks and this is to be found at the Cazenovia Library also).
        The book, marked "Cazenovia Town Book Containing Marks of Creatures" on the cover and "Marks of Cattle A" on the spine, contains a brief written description of the distinctive cuts, notches or markings on the ears of the cattle and sometimes a sketch of the pattern.  Some of these patterns and combinations of patterns include: swallow-tail cut, cropped off ear, slits, holes, spade shaped cuts, and "two half pennies."  Some of these marks were "taken" or used by others at a later date and their names have been inserted into the book (and this listing) near the original description of the mark.  Usually the date that the mark was taken by the next owner is not noted.
