Take a second look at this map.  The red lines are roads for automobiles, they are railroad lines - still the primary mode of transportation.  This view of western NY shows one reason that Gainesville, Silver Springs, and Rock Glen prospered in the early 1900s... two major railroad routes passed through the town.
