 Revolutionary War Soldiers

Photo from The Revolutionary War, National Geographic, 1967

Western New York wasn't settled until 1800, so the soldiers listed here did not live in Gainesville during the war.  Rather, they lived in New England, New Jersey, or the NY Hudson Valley during the Revolution, then moved to Gainesville later in their lives.
They are listed here because they were buried in the town of Gainesville (or so we thought).

Historical Wyoming - July 1976: Nathan Fuller, Jr., born in Hebron, Connecticut June 10, 1759,
died Gainesville November 23, 1840.  He married Hannah Welch June 18, 1786 at Thetford, Vermont.
Hannah was born in 1766 and died in Gainesville May 22, 1848.  They are buried in the part of the
Warsaw Cemetery on the west side of South Main Street.  A tall marble shaft marks the spot.
While living in Hebron, Nathan enlisted and served as a private in the Connecticut troops. From the
later part of August and early September 1776 he served in Capt. David Miller's Co. of Hebron.  The
company marched to New Haven where they halted two days, thence to Stamford, Connecticut where
Fuller was taken sick and left behind until a townsman got him a horse and carried him home.  Nathan
was gone from home 10 to 12 days.
January 1, 1777 one forth of the militia from Connecticut were attached to Capt. Skinner's Co. of
Connecticut troops and stationed at New London for its defense.  Nathan stayed there the rest of his
two months enlistment.
From Sept 1778 Fuller was at Fort Trumble near New London on military duty and worked on a fort
for one month (Lieut. William Buel and col. Ledyard were in command) until the expiration of his term
and was discharged.
Fuller was a substitute for Elisha Lord of Colchester, Connecticut in February 1779 in Capt. Lathan's Co.
of Artillery at Fort Griswold in the Town of Groton, New York.  Col. Ledyard was in command.  Fuller also
took his father's place,  Nathan Fuller, at Fort Griswold the last half of July 1779.
Three months from July 1780 Nathan, Jr. was in Lieut. William Buel's Co. Col. Ledyard's regiment.  He
went to Chatham, where the regiment was formed, and then to New London.  The regiment was ordered
up to Moheg to work for a few weeks and then back to New London.
Mr. Fuller received a pension in 1833 and was paid $75.20 for arrears and current pension.  His widow
recieved a pension dated March 5, 1844.

History of ancient Woodbury, pg 778: List of Soldiers in the Revolutionary War from Woodbury
It may be safely asserted that no town in Connecticut, or in New England, furnished a greater number of
men in the war of the Revolution, in proportion to the number of its inhabitants, than the town of Woodbury.
In 1776, every able-bodied man in this and the other western towns of Connecticut, between the ages of
sixteen and sixty years, was marched to New York, by order of Gen. Washington, and Woodbury was
during the entire war the head-quarters of the recruiting service in western Connecticut.  No complete list
of soldiers can be obtained.  The following is the best that can now be had.  It contains nearly 1,000 names.
A few in this list may have come here from other towns to enlist.  Probably not far from 1,500 men went from
this town during the course of the war.

Still Researching
Census: 1820 (Wisman)           Land:  Lot 48 22Oc1829
DAR Record, copy from Stan Rutherford:
Wiseman, Thomas was born in Norwich, County Norfolk, England on 18 July 1753.  He came to America
as a member of the British Ninth Regiment of Foot in General Burgoyne's army in 1776.  He was captured
by American forces at the Battle of Stillwater, NY on October 7, 1777.
After the surrender of British forces at Stillwater the captured soldiers were marched overland in the
"Convention Army" to the port of Boston.  Being too late in the year to be sent to England, the "army"
members were sent to quarters in Cambridge MA and were confined to barracks on Prospect and Winter
Hills until April 1778 when they were sent to the internment camps in Worchester County, MA.  The group
which included Thomas Wisemen [as a member of the Ninth Regiment of Foot] was sent to the internment
camp at Rutland MA, arriving there on 17 April 1778.
The British prisoners were removed from Rutland on 10 Nov. 1778.  They began a long march to new
internment camps in and around Charlottesville, VA.  Many of the prisoners deserted along the way,
remaining in America, and located particularly in Worchester Co. MA, and the colonies of NY, NJ & PA.
[See Murphy, Timothy. History of Rutland in Massachusetts, 1928, pg 62, 64]
Thomas was among those who escaped along the journey and made his way back to Charlton, MA
[Worcester Co.] where he joined the local Baptist church and married Abigail McIntire, a local girl, the
daughter of Noah McIntire.  By 1780 Thomas had joined the American forces and served two enlistments.
He was with the American forces at West Point when Arnold turned traitor and also witnessed the hanging
of Major Andre.
