PJ: 3/28/1943: Henry Clayton Stearns, 25, of 1120-B Lacoma Road, Erie, Pa. and formerly of this city, was almost instantly killed this afternoon at Ellery Center. Coroner Samuel T. Bowers said Stearns suffered a fractured skull as the result of a fall from a motorcycle which he purchased last night. The coroner said he was informed by Deputy Sheriff Gust Nelson of Bemus Point that Steans was alive only a few minutes after a young girl leaving the Ellery Center church saw his motorcycle "hop around" on the gravel road and then turn turtle, throwing the rider into the air. Stearns, a war worker, purchased the motorcycle last evening from Edward C. Sidelinger, 3532 Rose Avenue, Wesleyville, Pa., the coroner reported, and this morning drove it to Ellery Center with his wife as a passenger. They had gone to his wife’s home nearby, and Stearns left a few minutes later to visit a friend in Ellery Center a mile away, and had almost reached the highway on the Belleview Road when the accident occurred in front of the home of Louie Hallberg. Coroner Bowers said marks indicated that the machine struck a bump and then skidded on the loose gravel. Stearns had lived previously in the Bemus Point area. Stearns, who had been employed by the General Electric Company Plant in Erie for two years, was scheduled to enter the Army soon. He was a graduate of Bemus Point High School in the Class of 1935.
