CAFFOE

Caffoe, Roger P. b. Oct. 19, 1937 Jamestown, NY. d. Jan. 13, 2003 in his home. Age 65. s/o Peter and Anne (Euroe) Caffoe. md. Oct. 1, 1966 - Sandy White. PJ: 1/14/2003: Roger P. Caffoe, 65, of 2798 Bittersweet Dr., died at 9:10 a.m. Monday (Jan. 15, 2003) in his home. He was born Oct. 19, 1937, in Jamestown, the son of the late Peter and Anne Euroe Caffoe. He was a 1955 graduate of Jamestown High School and attended Jamestown Community College. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by the former Randco Incorporated in Sinclairville as company manager, and in earlier years, had been employed by Hopes Windows as a draftsman. After retirement, he worked doing light carpentry. He was a former Little League Baseball coach. His memberships include the Bemus Point Golf League, Lakewood Tennis Club, War Vets Recreation, and the Lakewood Rod & Gun club. He was a lifetime member of the Fluvanna Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a board member and chairman of the fund drive. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees, and golfing and skiing. He enjoyed spending time with his family and numerous friends. He is survived by his wife, the former Sandy White, whom he married Oct. 1, 1966; a son, Douglas Caffoe and a daughter, Dawn Dalson, both of Cleveland; a granddaughter, Grace Caffoe of Cleveland; and a brother Earl Caffoe of Jamestown. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Caffoe. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Dayle F. Keefer, pastor of Fluvanna Community Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, 113 East Second St., Jamestown or Hospice of Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake road, Mayville, N. Y., 14757. Caldwell, 4-month-old son of David E. and Jamie Monagan Caldwell of Fairview Avenue, Jamestown, died at 12:12 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 27, 2001) in WCA Hospital. He was born Sept. 29, 2000, in Jamestown. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Nicolas D. Caldwell at home; his maternal grandparents; John and Maria Monagan of Jamestown; his paternal grandparents: Ronald and Judith Caldwell of Bemus Point; and his great-grandparents: Elmer and June Monagan, Bertha Trigla and Jean Caldwell, all of Jamestown, Blaine D. and Sara Jane Fairman of Home, Pa., and Vincent Trigilia of Florida. A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family in Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Mike Cox will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Carlson, 69, of Ellery-Centralia Road, Bemus Point, died at 4:08 p.m. Wednesday (June 25, 1981) in Jamestown General Hospital, after a sudden illness. She was the widow of Alfred W. Carlson, who died Aug. 22, 1989. They were married July 25, 1831 in Johnstown, Pa. A lifelong area resident, Mrs. Carlson was born July 16, 1911 in Ellery Center, the daughter of Corydon and Maude Preston Walker. Mrs. Carlson was Historian for the Town of Ellery. Surviving are a daughter, Loraine C. Smith; a grandson, Alfred G. Cornell, and a granddaughter, Malissa Smith, all of Bemus Point. A private committal service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Bemus Point Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel McBride, pastor of Bemus Point United Methodist Church, will officiate. G - 11. Age 76. w/ Amanda Elisabeth Karlson. Obit: Andrew P. Carlson of Ellery Center died at the state hospital at Helmuth, aged 76 years. Surviving are three sons, Walfrid Carlson of Tonawanda, Alfred W. Carlson of Bemus Point and Carl S. Carlson of Jamestown.....The funeral of Andrew P. Carlson was held Saturday afternoon from the Youngberg Funeral Home with Rev. L. F. Nordstrom officiating. Bearers were Henry Dahlgren, Joe Williams, Carl Danielson, Noel E. Lawson, Kenneth Kesby and Frank Welch. Burial was in Bemus Point Cemetery.

Obit: Mrs. Amanda Elisabeth Carlson, wife of Andrew Carlson of Ellery Center, died at her home this morning at 11:10 o’clock aged 64 years. She is also survived by three sons, G. Walfrid Carlson of Tonawanda, NY; Alfred W. Carlson of Bemus Point; and Carl S. Carlson of Jamestown; one brother, Carl Fahstrom of Waldron, Washington; and one granddaughter Elizabeth Carlson of Jamestown. Mrs. Carlson was a member of Ellery Grange No. 353. Private funeral services will be held at the family residence Monday at 2:30 p.m..... Funeral services for Mrs. Amanda Elisabeth Carlson were held at the home at Ellery Monday afternoon. Rev. L. F. PJ: 4/ /1955: Bemus Point: Carl Carlson, 71, died at 12 noon Tuesday at his home in Oriental Park. Mr. Carlson was born in Norms Bruk Hedmara Saken, Sweden, the son of Lars and Johanna Larson Carlson. He came to this country in 1910. Prior to his retirement in 1952, Mr. Carlson was employed as an inspector at the Crescent Tool company. He was employed by this company 11 years. He married Elsie Bennight, March 31, 1925. The couple moved to Bemus Point in 1930, where they had since resided. He is survived by his wife; a step-daughter, Mrs. Willard Kestler, Bemus Point; a grandson, Ernest Kestler, Bemus Point; two nieces, Mrs. Julia Launstein, Chesaming, Mich., and Mrs. Ella McChestney, Okalhoma City, Okla. Carlson, Ephiram. d. Feb. 20, 19__. Shot himself through mouth and head at his home at Quail Trap, Town of Ellery. w/ Hilda M. Johnson. PJ: 2/26 /19__: Bemus Point: Ephraim Carlson committed suicide Friday afternoon by shooting himself with a shot-gun thru the mouth and head at his home at Quail Trap, some three miles above this village. his daughter, Mrs. Alton Casselman, had left the house for a few moments, and upon her return, found her father lying on the kitchen floor where he had fallen, apparently from the door of his bedroom. Mr. Carlson had recently been in poor health and more or less depressed and moody. There was no apparent motive for his desperate act. The deceased was a little over seventy years of age and is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hilda Johnson Carlson, five daughters, Mrs. Alton Casselman of Bemus Point, Mrs. Henry Bernard and Mrs. Elmer Peterson, Falconer, and Mrs. Kanock Bjork and Mrs. Albert Mestings of Frewsburg; two sons, Alem Carlson of Frewsburg and Warner Carlson of Greenhurst; one brother, Claus Carlson of Falconer, a sister who resides in Sweden, and twenty-five grandchildren. The funeral will be held on Monday.

A Jamestown area resident most of her life, she was born Jan. 17, 1915, in Snyder, Pa., a daughter of John and Louise Anderson. Mrs. Carlson was a retired bookkeeper at the former Bank of Jamestown. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Salvation Army Senior Citizens. Surviving are a daughter, Suzanne Vassallo of Jamestown; a son, David C. Carlson of Jacksonville, Fla.; four grandchildren: Kimberly and Frank D. Vassallo, both of Jamestown, Brett and Amanda Carlson, both of Jacksonville; and a sister, Emma Carlson of Kenmore. For many years Mrs. Carlson gave piano lessons in Bemus Point. She was a member of the Mozart Club in Jamestown. Mrs. Carlson was born in Corry, Pa., March 12, 1890, to LaVern and Pauline Phillips Dunham. Her husband, John Carlson, died several years ago. She had lived in this area most of her life. Mrs. Carlson was a member of the former Universalist Church of Bemus Point, the Bemus Point Study Club, the Ellery Post American Legion Auxiliary and the Ellery Senior Citizens Club. Her sister, Mrs. Mary Cooper, Jamestown, survives. Evans Funeral Home, Bemus Point, is in charge of arrangements.

Carlson, Oscar "William". b. Nov. 1, 1901 Port Allegany, Pa. d. Sept. 24, 1956 at his home, 80 Lakeside Drive, Bemus Point, NY of heart disease. Age 54. bd. Sept. 26, 1956 Lot 244 G - 7. s/o Carl A. & Ellen (Dahlquist) Carlson. w/ Edna Nobles. PJ: 9/24/1956: Bemus Point: One of the area’s best known law enforcement officers, O. William Carlson, Town of Ellery Police Chief, died at 5 a.m. today at his home here in Lakeside Drive. Chief Carlson had served in his present post since 1947. He was a familiar figure in this resort village where he also occupied the post of Bemus Point Police Officer and was a County Deputy Sheriff. He was born Nov. 1, 1901, at Port Allegany, Pa., the son of Carl A. and Ellen Dahlquist Carlson. He was confirmed at Lutheran Immanuel Church, Jamestown. Mr. Carlson was a member of Chautauqua County Deputy Sheriff’s Association; Sylvan Lodge, F. & A.M., Sinclairville; Bemus Point Masonic Club; and New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. He was past president of Chautauqua County Firemen’s Fraternity, Inc. He was an honorary member of Kendall Club and an exempt member of both Celoron and Bemus Point Fire Departments. He was past president and secretary of Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. Carlson was on Jamestown’s Police Force from 1942 until 1947, and since then was Police Chief of the Town of Ellery. Was in World War II, 604th Technical School Squadron, St. Petersburg, Fla. He was inducted Apr. 13, 1941 and received basic training at Keesler Field, Miss. Survivors include his wife, Edna Noble Carlson; a daughter, Mrs. Robert Stahley, Bemus Point; a sister, Mrs. Roy S. Ponton, Lakewood; a brother Carl A. Carlson, Celoron, and two grandchildren. Friends may call at Evans Funeral Home, Bemus Point, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with Rev. Karl Bach, pastor of First Unitarian Church, Jamestown, officiating. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening in the funeral home.

She and her sister, Ann Paterniti, owned and operated the Four Seasons Card Shop, from 1975 until 1979. For the past 14 years, she was a Mary Kay Cosmetic consultant. She was a 1945 graduate of Jamestown High School and a member of the Stillwater United Methodist Church. Survived by three sisters: Pauline Dellario and Ann Paterniti, both of Jamestown, and Marion Gullard of Nevada; and a brother, John Fragione of Jamestown. Mr. and Mrs. Carlson lived at Sunset Bay, Bemus Point, NY.

Sept. 30, 1942 Manse of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church, Jamestown, NY - Gladys C. Swanson. PJ: 8/13/2006 - Robert W. Carlson, 84, of 11114 Wind Palm Rd., Ft. Myers, Fla. and Sunset Bay, Bemus Point, formerly of Sanibel Island, Fla., died on Thursday, August 10, 2006 in Hope Hospice, Ft. Myers. A Jamestown resident, he was born December 14, 1921, in Kane, Pa., the son of Ethel J. Carlson Youngren. Mr. Carlson attended school in Kane until his family moved to Jamestown, where he attended Rogers St. School, Jefferson Jr. High School and graduated from Jamestown High School in June 1940. Upon graduation from high school, Mr. Carlson joined the National Guard on Porter Avenue, training at that location until the National Guard was mobilized and was sent to Fort Dix, N.J. He applied and was accepted into pilot training school at the time of the outbreak of World War II and was transferred back into the infantry in the light weapons NCO. He was sent to Germany where he served in the 357th Infantry Division until the war ended. He received for his valor in service the Bronze Star Metal, with an Oak Leaf Cluster, and was also very proud of the fact that General George Patton pinned his first Bronze star, asking, "Are you scared soldier?" with his reply, "Yes Sir," and the General said, "So am I." Mr. Carlson earned the American Defense Service Metal, Good Conduct Metal, European African Middle Eastern Service Metal and the Purple Heart. He was discharged from the service on October 13, 1945. Mr. Carlson was a member of the Jamestown Police Dept., where he became a lieutenant, serving from 1953 to 1959, at which time he became licensed by the State of New York as a private investigator, owning and operating Pri-Det Investigations with Mrs. Carlson from 1958 until ill health forced him to retire in 1982, at which time his son, Gary, took over the business. Mr. Carlson was a life member of the Combat Infantryman's Association, A Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Regiment, Ft. Myers, Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion for 36 years, a member of the BPO Elks Lodge 263 for 44 years and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars of Fort Myers, Fla. He was also a charter member of Heritage Palms Country Club, Ft. Myers. Surviving are his wife, Gladys C. Swanson Carlson, whom he married in the Manse of Grace Evangelical United Brethren Church on September 30, 1942; a son, Gary W. Carlson of Fort Myers; two grandsons: Adam W. Carlson of Fort Myers and Courtney J. Carlson of Brooklyn, N.Y. Mr. Carlson was preceded in death by his mother on October 9, 1986. Burial will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.

Levi came with his parents to Chautauqua County in 1822, when he was eight years old . Jane Haskin came one or two years later from Herkimer County by the Erie Canal to Buffalo. Levi and his wife lived several years in a log cabin.

Obit: The death of Mrs. Levi Carpenter occurred at the family residence in Ellery Thursday morning. She had been confined to her bed for the past five months and death resulted from the exhaustion caused from cancer. She was 81 years old and had long been a resident of Ellery. On June 1, 1897, Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter celebrated the 60th anniversary of their marriage. Besides the husband, Levi Carpenter, she leaves five children: Mrs. A. J. Russell of Manisteo, Mich.; Mrs. William Russell of Dewittville; Mrs. Henry Sherman of New Orleans; Alanson B. Carpenter of Omaha, Neb.; and Orlando Carpenter of Ellery.

Carpenter. PJ: 5/31/1934: Maple Springs: Mrs. Fannie Fenton Carpenter, a life resident of the Town of Ellery, died at her country home Tuesday at 1:10 o’clock, aged nearly 85 years. She was born July 21, 1849 in the Town of Ellery, a daughter of the late Bicknel D. and Cordelia Fenton, and had always resided in this vicinity. In 1869 Fannie Fenton was married to Orlando H. Carpenter, and to them four daughters were born, Mrs. Martin H. Furlow and Mrs. Lester W. Townsend of Maple Springs, Mrs. Elton Hunt of Buffalo, and Mrs. Ward Cadwell of Dewittville. Mrs. Carpenter is also survived by eight grandchildren: Mrs. Harold Fairbank of Jamestown, Mrs. Orland Underwood of Oklahoma City, Miss Laura Furlow, Miss Lillian Furlow, Mrs. Ernest Smith, Miss Clara Townsend and Emmett Townsend, all of Maple Springs and Ford Cadwell of Dewittville; one niece, Mrs. Lucy Fenton Ross of Jamestown; and two nephews, Louis H. Fenton of Brooklyn and Yates Fenton of New York City. Mr. Carpenter died Dec. 13, 1915. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Maple Springs Union Church, the Maple Springs Ladies’ Aid Society and Dewittville Grange. Her sweet gentleness endeared her to members of the summer colony as well as the year round residents of this community. Funeral services will be held at the home Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.

He was the husband of the former Helen E. Pickard Carr, whom he married Feb. 8, 1946, in Ripley. He was born June 25, 1922, in Fredonia, a son of Morrison and Maude Silleman Carr. Carr served in Darby’s First Rangers, of U.S. Army Special Forces, serving in Central Europe, Africa, Sicily, and was a prisoner of war in Germany for 18 months. He entered the Army Oct. 15, 1942 and was discharged Oct. 2, 1945. He owned and operated Lakeview Restaurant in Mayville from 1948 to 1953, and until his death, the Salt and Pepper Restaurant, in Bemus Point. He had been a bus driver for Bemus Point Central School System for 20 years, retiring this year. Surviving beside his wife, are two sons: Dennis E. Carr and Gary M. Carr; six granddaughters: Andrea R., Alicia A., Abigail C., Jennifer M., Tracy A. and Lori A. Carr, all of Jamestown. He was a retired telegrapher for the Pennsylvania Railroad and later for the JW and NW Railroad. He also operated a Jersey dairy and was an organizer and long time member of the Dairymen’s League Association. Mr. Case was born in Ellery Center Dec. 23, 1877, the son of George and Eva Winchester Case, and was a life long resident of the area. He was married in Niagara Falls on Nov. 19, 1903 to the former Elizabeth Lemke, who died Dec. 24, 1959. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eva C. Wright, Huron, S.D. and Mrs. Elizabeth Alday, R. Casselman of Manchester, Tenn; 17 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Viola Carlson in May 1952, a daughter Shirley V. Proper, in August, 1995; two brothers: DeForest and Irwin Casselman; and six sisters: Pearl Crandall, Stella Hallberg, Ruby Crandall, Margaret Skillman, Marjorie Stowell and Norma Casselman. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Bemus Point Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church will officiate. Church in Bemus Point. Casselman, whom she married Aug. 8, 1945, in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Bemus Point and who died Oct. 8, 1994. An area resident most of her life, she was born July 19, 1922, in Lincoln, Neb., a daughter of Max and Theresa Ramackers Heck. She was a graduate of Bemus Point High School. She had been employed by the former Crescent Tool Company and Marlin Rockwell Corp. She had also been employed for 10 years at the Cummins Engine Company, retiring in 1984. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and a member of its Altar and Rosary Society. Surviving are six daughters: Rita Stenstrom of Falconer, Mary Beck and Barbara Pearson, both of Pittsburgh, Pa., Sandra Bosworth of Kennedy, Judith Powell of Amherst, Joan Fagerstrom of Jamestown; five sons: Jerome Casselman of Oklahoma City, Thomas Casselman of Churchville, Richard Casselman of Jamestown, Mark Casselman and James Casselman, both of Amherst; 25 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Dolores Peterson of Syracuse. Mr. Casselman had served as supervisor for the Town of Ellery for one term, 1919-1920. He was born Jan. 23, 1867, the son of Benjamin and Melissa Wheeler Casselman. Surviving are two sons, DeForest Casselman, Youngstown, Ohio and Elton Casselman, Bemus Point; four daughters, Mrs. Stella Hallberg, Falconer; Mrs. George Crandall, Mrs. Elmer Skillman, and Mrs. Clyde Stowell, all of Bemus Point; 40 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Evan’s Funeral Home, Bemus Point. The Rev. Bruce Hankey, pastor of the Bemus Point Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. (Mr. Casselman was the youngest of nine children of Benjamin and Melissa Wheeler Casselman. He moved to North Ellery when his parents purchased a farm there when he was about two years old. He spent the greater part of his life on this farm. He learned the carpentry trade early in life.)
