Oct. 15, 1846 - Thisbe Ann Ferris, d/o Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Ferris of Eaton Rapids township. By the death of Morris St. John Annis, which occurred at noon Thursday, October 18, 1900, one of the early settlers of Eaton Rapids, and widely known among the pioneers of the county, passed away. He was born of revolutionary stock in the town of Sparta, Livingston County, N.Y. where he resided until the year 1843, when he started out on a western trip and landed in Louisville, Ky., where he worked about a year on the Ohio river, from which place he went to the state of Ohio, where he worked in an edge tool factory, returning to his birth place in the state of New York soon after. In the fall of 1845 he came to Michigan, locating at Eaton Rapids, where he worked at his trade, that of a blacksmith. October 15, 1846, he was united in marriage to Miss Thisbe Ann Ferris, after which he located on a farm three miles northwest of Eaton Rapids, where by hard work he made himself quite comfortable in this worlds goods. In his labors he was aided by his good wife, who did her part to build a home for their future years. As a result of their marriage seven children were born to them, five of whom are now living, viz: Samuel Annis, farmer of Eaton Rapids township; A. (Alvirus) W. Annis, shoe dealer of this city; Mrs. George Seely (Roxanne) of this city; Mrs. James William Seely (Sally Ann) of Eaton Rapids township; and Mrs. George Dewey of Machinac Island. The older residents of the city were quite well acquainted with the deceased, he having moved here from the farm some 18 years ago, and he was respected by all as a straightforward citizen and a good neighbor. Both Mr. and Mrs. Annis were always pleased to entertain their old friends, and the best from their abundant larder was none too good for those who called to see them. He was the son of Jacob Annis, a soldier of the revolution, and he took pride in informing his friends of the fact. For many years Mr. Annis was a member of the Baptist Church in this city and during the past two years of his illness he expressed a desire to be taken home to his Lord and Savior whenever He was ready. His companion, who has also been a great sufferer, is now in feeble health, and has the sympathy of her neighbors and friends in her affliction.

The funeral took place from the Baptist Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Dr. Callen of the M.E. Church officiating owing to illness of the pastor. The remains were laid to rest in the Brickyard Cemetery two miles west of the city. George L. Booth, George B. Hamlin, Samuel Horner, Robert Hayward, George Rogers, and Henry Hused acting as pall bearers.

8. George W. Annis. b. 1825. md. Hannah (__________).

Jacob Annis enlisted in the spring of 1780 in Capt. Ebenezer Fry’s Company of the 1st Massachusetts Regiment, Continental Line, commanded by Col. Joseph Vose, and served until the spring or summer of 1783. He saw battle action at White Plains, King’s Bridge, and at Yorktown. His regiment was part of General Lafayette’s Light Infantry Division. His pension application was dated April 30, 1818, Canandaigua, Ontario County, N.Y. He was granted a soldier’s pension -- #17235. He is named in the 1840 Pension List as being 77 years of age. After Jacob Annis death, his widow Deborah applied for pension, May 30, 1853, when she was 67 years old. In 1854 she was residing with her youngest son, George, at Eaton Rapids, Mich.

John Annis was a younger brother of Jacob Annis. "DAR Patriot Index," p. 16, gives his date of birth as July 1, but the "Annis Genealogy" (1978) compiled by Verle L. Annis, gives his birth date as Aug. 20, 1764. He died Jan. 19, 1839 at Frewsburg, town of Carroll, Chautauqua County, N.Y. not Jan. 18. 1834 as the 1966 "DAR Patriot Index" states on p. 16.

The list of men raised in Massachusetts to reinforce the Continental Army for a term of six months in 1780, pursuant to a resolve of June 5, 1780, included the name of John Annis. He was described as 16 years of age, 5 ft. 6 in. in stature, of ruddy complexion, residence - Andover. He arrived at Springfield, Mass., on July 2, 1780, and marched to camp the same day under command of Capt. Phineas Parker. This data is recorded in "Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors of the Revolution, I, 275. During this enlistment he served at West Point, Fishkill, and Tappan, N.J., where he witnessed the hanging of Andre, Oct. 2, 1780. He was discharged at West Point, Jan. 1781, having served 6 months, 10 days.

John Annis, re-enlisted in May, 1782 under Israel Morey at Orford, Vt., then in N.H., for six months duty on the northern frontier against Canadian Indians. His experiences in this area induced him to remain on the frontier when his service was ended. He settled in Thetford, Vt., and was responsible for numerous relatives moving from the Andover and Tewksbury sections of Massachusetts to Thetford township.

John and Sabra (Closson) Annis lived in Thetford, Vt., until after all their children were born. About 1806 they removed to western New York with their youngest children and established a new home near Batavia, N.Y. They were residing there at the outbreak of the War of 1812. John Annis served during the war as Captain of a company comprising mainly of revolutionary war veterans. His son, Harvey, was killed in action at Fort Erie in 1814 in his 15th year. Soon after the end of the war, the family moved farther west and settled in the town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, N.Y., where John lived from 1815 to 1834.

After his wife’s death in 1833, John Annis moved to Frewsburg, town of Carroll, Chautauqua County, NY, to be near his son Phineas, who lived about a mile distant. John Annis died of burns received when his house caught fire, Jan. 19, 1839 and was buried in Lewis Cemetery.

Memo: from Edna Ingham, 1968: I am sure John Annis, brother of Jacob Annis, a Revolutionary soldier known to be in Lewis Cemetery, is also here in Lewis Cemetery. I checked with Frewsburg regarding John and Phineas, his son, and there is no record of either being buried in Frewsburg, though both died there. John Annis’s house caught fire and he was so badly burned that he died. Apparently that was not newsworthy, as I can find no account of it in the newspapers. I have listed John and Phineas and their wives here in the Lewis Cemetery where they belong.

Phineas Annis was the last child of John and Sabra (Closson) Annis. He was still only a boy when his parents permanently settled in Ellery, shortly after the War of 1812. He bought and sold a considerable number of farms in Ellery township during his lifetime. He was best known, however, as a skilled carpenter throughout Chautauqua County, where a number of examples of his work still can be identified. In 1847 he was head carpenter when the first Baptist Church of Frewsburg was built. This splendid structure is still in use, and has been closely related to the pioneer families and their descendants continuously to the present.

Phineas was an active churchman, like his father-in-law, John Putnam. Both were deacons, and there are records showing that the first church meetings were held in the Putnam home.

Due to the evident closeness of the Annis and Putnam families, it is understandable that the recently widowed Phoebe (Wilmarth) Putnam should come to the aid of Phineas when his wife died in 1841, leaving eight young children. She, too, had eight children, but her children were older. The union of the two families provided for the needs of both, and was successful as shown by a newspaper clipping found in the scrapbook of Minerva (Fenton) Annis, a daughter-in-law of Phineas, which reported an event occurring about thirty-two years following this second marriage of Phineas:

"A FAMILY REUNION. A social gathering and reunion of the family of Mrs. Phoebe Annis, of Carroll, was held at the house of Mr. Warren Putney, in Poland, on Thursday, Oct. 2, 1873. Mrs. Putney is a granddaughter of Mrs. Annis and had invited all the family to meet and pay their respects to their aged mother. Mrs. Annis was the daughter of Mrs. Selah Wilmarth and was born on Long Island, near Brooklyn, Oct. 22, 1791. Her father was with Gen. Washington’s Army when the British took New York during the Revolutionary War. About the year 1800 her parents removed to Cayuga County, N.Y. In 1808 she married Ephron Putnam and they settled the same year in what is now the town of Ellery. Here they brought up a family of eight children, all of whom are now living. Mr. Putnam died in 1839 and in 1841 she was married to Dea. Phineas Annis, of Carroll, where they still reside. Her family consists of eight children, namely Eliza, wife of Edward Wait of Carroll; Rhoda, wife of Peter Brownell of Ellery; Esther, wife of Wm. B. Smedley of Carroll; Jane, wife of John Vanderwork of Ellery; Margaret wife of D. S. Whitman of Carroll, and Mortimer Putnam of Carroll. She has thirty grandchildren living, forty-five great grandchildren and six great, great grandchildren. All of her children were present except Mrs. Vanderwork, with a goodly number of grandchildren and great grandchildren, and two of her great, great grandchildren, namely Mariette, a daughter of Mrs. L. D. Whitcomb, of Forest County, Pa., who is a daughter of Mrs. Joshua Picard of Forest County, a daughter of Mrs. Wait, and also Maud Belle, a daughter of William E. Wait, of Randolph, a son of Mrs. Wait of Carroll.

It was a sight such as is not often witnessed to see these grandchildren of Mrs. Annis, namely Mrs. Pickard and Mr. Oliver Wait, present, to hear their grandchildren saying "Grandmother this is my granddaughter."

Mr. Nathan Wilmarth of Frewsburg, the only surviving brother of Mrs. Annis was also present, together with several of the children and grandchildren of Dea. Annis and his first wife, making, with a few other guests a company of about seventy-five persons. Dea. Annis was the son of Mr. John Annis and was born in Thetford, Orange Co., Vt., Dec. 14, 1803. He has attained a good old age, and like the patriarch Joseph has lived to see his children’s children of the third generation, but in this respect he has to yield the palm to his wife who has seen her grandchildren’s grandchildren of the fifth generation. Dea. and Mrs. Annis have been for many years worthy members of the Frewsburg Baptist Church and by invitation their pastor, Rev. A. D. Bush, was present, and they had devotional exercises with their numerous family gathered about them.

Hoard & Upham, the well known photographic artists of Jamestown, were also present and took a picture of the venerable couple, with daughter, granddaughter, great granddaughter and great, great granddaughter, a group such as few artists ever had before them. The day was beautiful, the entertainment excellent and everything passed off pleasantly as was appropriate to such an interesting and in many respects remarkable occasion. May the days of the patriarchal pair be yet long upon the earth, their posterity increase in numbers and in worth, and all gathered at the last in their Heavenly Father’s House."

NOTE: The clipping quoted above was saved by Hannah Minerva (Fenton) Annis, the wife of James Quincy Annis, the seventh child of Phineas Annis. She and her husband were living in, or near, Erie, Pa., at the date of the reunion and had three small children. Since the parents of both were in the Carroll-Frewsburg community, it is possible that they may have been among the children and grandchildren present at the reunion who were descendants of Phineas. The closeness of these families is further illustrated by the fact that Maud Fenton Annis, the youngest daughter of James Q. and Minerva Annis, married Lesley Sherman Whitcomb in 1902. He was the young widower with two baby daughters, Marie and Beth Whitcomb, granddaughters of the L. D. Whitcomb mentioned in the foregoing clipping.

Washington at the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Lord Corwallis, commander of the British Forces. He was discharged Oct. 28, 1783. The above data obtained from the government records at Washington, D.C.

There has been a family narrative handed down from generation to generation that Joseph Boyd was one of Gen. Washington’s body guards during the last two years of the war. This, however, cannot be substantiated from the records.

After Joseph Boyd was discharged in Oct. 1788 he returned to Plainfield, Conn. where on Feb. 5, 1784 he married Zerua Williams. In 1781 he moved his family to Sangerfield District, Oneida County., N.Y. where he took up a grant of land. On Apr. 1, 1818 he made application for government pension, claim No. S45299 from Brookfield, Madison County, N.Y. at which place government records show he was living. Pension records place him at Sangerfield, N.Y. in 1820 where he was living with his wife, Zerua, who was 59 years of age, and a daughter, Lucretia, aged 17 years. He was receiving a pension at this time under certificate No. 11283 issued June 3, 1819, commencing Apr. 1, 1818 as per Act of Mar. 18, 1818.

The next government records show Joseph Boyd as living with his son, Alvin Boyd, in 1840 in Ellery, Chautauqua County, N.Y. On Mar. 4, 1846 records show that Joseph Boyd certified that he had resided for seven years at Stockton, Chautauqua County, N.Y. The last pension payment covering the period Sept. 4, 1845 to Mar. 4, 1846 was made to Madison Burnell at Albany, N.Y. on Mar. 16, 1846 as attorney for Joseph Boyd.

According to the above records Joseph Boyd moved from Sangerfield, N.Y. to Stockton, N.Y. in 1833, soon after his wife, Zerua (Williams) had died.

Mr. Jay Boyd Myers of Relay, Md. located the Lewis Cemetery which was very much overgrown with small trees and brush and with the help of Mr. Purl Cornell Sr., Legion Commander at Bemus Point, N.Y., he found the grave of Joseph Boyd. The Legion had placed a flag marker on the grave as they said that a soldier was buried there, but that they did not know his name. Later, Mr. Cornell advised Mr. Myers that when cleaning up the cemetery in the spring of 1934 they had found two field stones that had been placed on the graves, one marking the grave of Joseph Boyd and that stone had the date 1845 cut into the surface. This date is the year in which Joseph Boyd died, so the grave of Joseph was identified without question. The other stone had no marking but as we know that Alvin Boyd was buried on his own lot, the second stone must have marked Alvin’s grave.

In December 1935 Mr. Myers made arrangements with the Quartermaster’s office in Washington, D. C. to furnish a headstone to government standards as furnished by government for all Revolutionary soldiers. The marker was sent to Bemus Point, Chautauqua County, N.Y. Mar. 25, 1936 and it was placed on the grave of Joseph Boyd.

A sampler made by Lucretia Boyd at Sangerfield, Aug,. 7, 1831 giving the names and births of Joseph Boyd’s family was in the possession of Miss Carrie M. Young, great-great-granddaughter of Joseph Boyd. Carrie lived in Bemus Point, N.Y. born July 4, 1882 in the town of Ellery, Chautauqua County, N.Y., died. Mar. 6, 1969 at Fenton Park Nursing Home, age 86. She is buried in Fluvanna Cemetery. Carrie was the daughter of Eugene and Belle (Smiley) Young.

1. Sarah Elizabeth Brownell. b. May 17, 1850 Ellery, Chautauqua County, N.Y. d. Sept. 16, 1905. md - John C. Lewis.

David Brownell received his education at the district school in Sand Lake, N.Y., and while a young man he used to build flaxmills in the summer and would work in them winters. In the summer of 1831, he with one of his wife’s uncles, came from Pittstown, N.Y. to Ellery, N.Y., with a horse and wagon, returning the same way, looking for a farm to locate upon., James McCoul had offered his farm previously, for eighteen dollars an acre, but would not say what he would take now. He found one he could buy, located between Bemus Point, N.Y., and Ellery Center, N.Y., for nine dollars an acre. Before leaving Pittstown, N.Y., he had made up his mind not to buy a farm until he had returned home.

After returning to Pittstown, N.Y., he made up his mind to buy the farm for nine dollars an acre, and wrote his father-in-law, Joseph Brownell, to buy it for him. Before sealing the letter, he again thought he would like the McCoul farm, and instructed his father-in-law to buy it if he could get it for eighteen dollars an acre. Joseph Brownell saw McCoul, making a contract for his farm at eighteen dollars an acre, paying one hundred dollars to bind the bargain, McCoul saying, "that was the easiest hundred dollars he ever received, as David Brownell would never come after the farm." He was to be disappointed, for David Brownell with his family started again that fall for Ellery, N.Y. going as far a Buffalo, N.Y., on the Erie Canal. McCoul was digging potatoes when Brownell came in sight. Throwing down his hoe, he said, "The farm’s gone."

In 1851 he moved on the farm joining him on the south, and while living there he built a new house on the farm and he had vacated, moving into it in 1857, living there until his death. Although of a strong Christian character, he never identified himself with any church. He never sought political preferment. He was once nominated for a town office and lost the election by one vote. Jedediah Vorce, an Ellery pioneer and intimate friend, rode with him to election, and wanting to vote for a man on the opposition ticket, voted it straight, thus causing his defeat. He was a man of very strong mind. He accumulated quite a property, owning at one time three hundred and twenty-five acres of land on the east shore of Lake Chautauqua, opposite the now famous Chautauqua Assembly. He is buried beside his wife in the Lewis Cemetery in Ellery, Chautauqua County, N.Y.

There is no actual evidence of Cynthia being interred at Lewis Cemetery. The caretaker told Charles Lorain Carpenter, who compiled "The Descendants of Timothy Carpenter" that in years past a wagon load of gravestones had been carted off to construct a private home walk. At this time the Lewis Cemetery was in a state of being restored. Some stones were covered with sod, but the compiler tried to uncover those in the vicinity of the Oliver Carpenter site. There were numerous stones piled in corners along the edge of the cemetery.
