Obituary of Hiram Haskin - June 2, 1890 by Nathan Wilbur: Again we are called to pay the last tribute to one of our dear ones, and a son of Ira Haskin. Hiram Haskin was born in Hadley, Saratoga County, on the 20th day of Nov. 1816 and died at Ellery, Chautauqua. Co. Sept. 23, 1889 and buried in Lewis Burying Ground. He moved with his parents to Chautauqua in Aug. 1819, he then being nearly 3 years old. The journey which was made with ox team, over hill, hollow and logs, took six weeks to accomplish, and we can now almost encircle the globe in that time. Hiram’s wife died June 20, 1851, his mother died next day, June 21, 1851. Sad, sad days for us all. His second wife was Rebecca Parker, no children. She died Jan. 30, 1867. This third wife was Adelia Sturgis. Two children, Frank and Clarence. His principle business was farming. He was classed by our business men, as honest, upright and always to be trusted. He was one of the best fishermen on Chautauqua Lake. He played violin for dances, all over the county--he was jolly, llurly and enthusiastic. We can look back during his eight years of his presidency of the Haskin Reunion. For several years he had the Cannon Booming at 7 a.m. telling all around the day of Jubilee Haskin Reunion. In the year 1881 he commenced to act as President of the Association and held that position until June 13, 1889.

Following written by Mrs. Hannah Haskin Case, Jan. 1904 and read at the Haskin Reunion: Ira Haskin’s brother Freedom Haskin was 21 years older than Ira.. Ira moved from Saratoga in 1819 and moved with ox team over logs through woods and located on the farm that he cleared up with his boys, Hiram, James and Andrew. His farm was Maple, Oak and Chestnut with a lovely Maple Sugar bush where he made all the sugar that his family used, for in those days there was no granulated sugar. When they wanted something nice in the sugar line, they would stir the maple syrup when it became sugar until it was small particles of sugar for the table use and made buckets full of soft sugar for pumpkin pie or cake with no frosting, which was a thing unheard of then. In early days the only nice fruit for sauce was boiled apples. Cider cooked down thick with sweet apples made lovely sauce for any one to eat in those days. He built a nice barn which in those times there was a "Raising Bee", everybody turned out to help for there was a big time then. Men carried their wives then to help and to make a visit. Sister Jane can remember when that barn was raised and what a time they had with those heavy timbers to lift in place. They got their water down the hill, a nice spring with water as clear as crystal with two or three speckled trout in the spring to keep it pure and nice. He had a shed for the cows and ox team and when he had his new house he thought he had a palace. Then later he was Justice of Peace. He tried many a suit, for then there was not so many to war against one another for every one lived and let live. He was a man that was never sued, nor he never sued a man - that is saying a good deal for a man that has lived on the same farm for seventy years or more. The builder of his large barn was Tubal C. Owen. He did the carpentering, that would of been seventy or eighty years ago and in 1849 he built a new cottage house on a hill south of the old log house, which in those days was a palace, for style and architecture it was something wonderful. There was a cellar the whole length of the house, which held all the vegetables of the season. There was a large parlor, dining room, kitchen and wood house, six bedbrooms, two from each room and had a nice bed in it. The pantry was from the kitchen, and a large one for we had cows, which used to be all the place for to care for the milk. Butter used to be cheap in those days. I can remember when father only got 10 and some cents for it, but they thought that a big price. The next year my mother was taken sick and was sick one year. She did not live long to enjoy her new home which we moved into in 1850. She was taken too much comfort in her new home to stay with us long and in June 20, 1851 she died and then we were left without a mother. Cornelia and myself cared for the house and then my father got married again, brought a wife home and children so "we stepped out". Father married Mrs. Sarah Moulton or Beach as she was called. She had quite a large family, 4 boys and 2 girls so they "stepped in" and "we stepped out." Then he sold his one hundred acres for 50 of Hiram’s farm, joining and moved there. He had got too old to work so hard and to take life easier. He was taken sick and died July 20, 1873, age 81 years. He was buried in Lewis Burying Ground where mother, brothers and sisters are buried and good many relatives are buried and where they are at rest and their works do follow them.
HASKIN, James. b. Dec. 1, 1814 Hadley, Saratoga County, N.Y. d. Jan. 20, 1886 Bemus Point, Chautauqua County, N.Y. Age 71/1/20. s/o Ira and Hannah (Serles) Haskin. md. 1st - Cornelia Brown. md. 2nd - Amy Culver. The parents of James, Ira and Hannah Haskin, emigrated to Chautauqua County in 1818 and settled in the town of Ellery. James was the oldest of a large family of 4 boys and 7 girls. He endured the many hardships and privation of the early settlers of this county, many a tall tree has been felled by his hands, where now the beautiful green fields can be seen and many, yes countless are the fish he has caught in the waters of our beautiful Chautauqua Lake. He was a good Christian and died in the faith of Jesus Christ. His work is finished and our Heavenly Father has bidden him come home to the eternal Mansion prepared from the foundation of the world. He has joined that reunion where there will be no more parting, no more sorrow, no more pain. All is well, he is at rest.

Obit. 5/10/1874: Levi Hoag departed this life May 1st in his ninety-fourth year. He was born in Delaware County, New York December 13th, 1780. He was married to Desire Gardner October 11th, 1798, and with his family settled in the town of Ellery, within about one mile of the lake, the 6th of June, 1832. Settling upon a heavily timbered piece of land, he battled manfully for a home with muscle, energy and time gave to him and his in all its beauty and comforts. A Quaker by birth, he too was a consistent and exemplary friend in all of his intercourse with mankind. Some fifteen years since he gave to his only son Levi his homestead, and with his second wife settled upon a small place in Fluvanna. He was a regular attendant upon the means of Divine Grace; an earnest listener, and whenever the spirit moved, a pleasant and interesting exhorter. Many who will see his going out and coming in no more, will remember his words of comfort and gladness as he has spoken them in the past. He passed on to the better land after a few days of suffering in his ninety-fourth year. Ripe with old age and full of years, he leaves a name unsullied, an example worthy of imitation and a memory long to be remembered and loved.
