OUR FATHER

Beneath the sod he is sleeping,

.....His troubles are all passed;

And his angelic spirit has reached

.....That heavenly home at last.

The family tie is broken,

.....Our father he is dead;

May God permit his blessing,

.....To rest upon our heads.

Oh! how we miss our father

.....No human tongue can tell;

We long to leave this sinful world,

....And go to heaven to dwell.

He has joined members of the family,

.....Who have passed on before;

They have crossed o’er Jordan,

.....Where parting is no more.

A sister and a mother

.....From life’s troubles and cares are o’er,

They have entered that peaceful home,

.....And will wait and watch on the other shore.

We hope to join our father,

.....When life’s troubles are all o’er;

And pray that each member of the family

.....May safely reach that shore.

Funeral services for Henry Clayton Stearns, 25, of 1120-B Lacoma Road, Erie, Pa. who died almost instantly Sunday afternoon when he was thrown from his newly-purchased motorcycle as it skidded on a gravel road near Ellery Center, will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Ellery Center Church. The Rev. Constant Johnson will officiate. Burial will be at Bemus Point. Coroner Samuel T. Bowers today said he had issued a verdict of accidental death. He said Stearns had received a skull fracture in the fall from the motorcycle he had purchased Saturday from Edward C. Sidelinger, 3532 Wesley Avenue, Wesleyville, Pa. Shortly before the accident the young man had taken his wife, Mrs. Elsie Warner Stearns, to visit her parents in Ellery Center. A girl leaving the Ellery Center Church at the time of the mishap told Deputy Sheriff Gust Nelson of Bemus Point, that she had seen the motorcycle skid on the gravel road and then turn over, throwing the rider into the air. After taking his wife to the home of her parents, not far from the scene of the accident Stearns had left to visit a friend about a mile away. He had almost reached the highway on the Belleview road when the accident occurred in front of the Louie Hallberg home. The machine hit a bump and then skidded on the loose gravel, Coroner Bowers believed. Stearns, who had been employed at the General Electric Company plant in Erie for two years, was scheduled to enter the Army soon. He had lived previously in the Bemus Point vicinity. He was a graduate of Bemus Point High School in the Class of 1935. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Elsie Warner Stearns; his father, Steward L. Stearns, Frewsburg; a brother, Norman Stearns, Portland, Ore.; three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Wiltsie, Frewsburg, Mrs. William Fletcher, Denver, Colo., Mrs. Ingelehert, Greenbelt, Md. 5. Joanna Ethel Stearns Brooks. (also known as Ethel, Anna Ethel) b. Feb. 16, 1919 Manley Homestead, NW of Ellery Center, Chautauqua County, N.Y. d. Feb. 2, 2000 1545 Texas Ave., Grand Junction, Co. bd. May 28, 2000 Lone Tree Cemetery, Telluride, SanMiguel County, Colorado. md. June 6, 1936 Frewsburg - Joseph Milo Wiltsie. Joanna E. Wiltsie, age 80, of Grand Junction died Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at her home. A memorial service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church with Dr. John Bruington officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mrs. Wiltsie was born February 16, 1919 in Ellery Center, New York to Steward and Carrie Ethel Stearns and was later adopted on November 2, 1921 by Ray and Hazel Eldridge Brooks. She spent her childhood in Frewsburg, New York and married Joseph M. Wiltsie on June 6, 1936 in the Baptist Parsonage in Frewsburg, New York. They lived in Frewsburg until 1943 to 1974 and Zapata, Texas from 1974 to 1983. She then moved to Grand Junction in 1983. Mrs. Wiltsie was a homemaker, a member of the North Presbyterian Church in Denver and has been supported by the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Junction. She belonged to the Ladies Society of Locomotive Fireman and Enginemen. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, visiting with friends, listening to church services on tape, and especially her poodle companions. Survivors include her daughters, Joy M. (Richard M.) Swerdfeger and Patricia J. (James R.) Osborn of Grand Junction; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Inez Fletcher of Port Charlotte Florida and Norma Rengarts of Sebring, Florida. She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Sue J. Fletcher; a sister, Isabel McKinsey; and brothers Norman and Clayton Stearns. Arrangements are under the direction of Callahan-Edfast Mortuary.

When Caroline Ethel "Carrie" Manley Stearns died the children had a very difficult time. At first, the Grandmother (Steward’s mother) was taking care of the children, except for Annie (Joanna). She was being "tossed" around Frewsburg to various people until adopted by Ray and Hazel Brooks. A neighbor of the Brooks, Mrs. Fisk, told Joanna (years later) that she cried and cried the first three days she was with Hazel and Ray.

Steward’s sister, Inez Winters, came from Mason City, Iowa and took Grandmother and "Little Inez" to Iowa. Inez has no memory of her mother’s death. The Grandmother Stearns died in Iowa.

Norman and Clayton "Cricket" lived with their father and were raised by the neighbors, the town, and according to Norman, "We raised ourselves." Someone in the town nicknamed Norman "Grasshopper" and Clayton "Cricket." The name "Cricket" stayed with Clayton all his life.

Some cousins took Isabel, but she kept running away. Eventually the Grant Putnam family adopted her.
