Raner, William. b. Mar. 25, 1930 Dunkirk, NY. d. Dec. 27, 1997 in his home. Age 67. s/o George & Mabel (Sischo) Raner. w/ Hazel M. Raner. (William Raner & Hazel M. Raner were cousins). PJ: 12/28/1997. Dewittville: William Raner, 67, of 5196 Ellery-Centralia Road, died Saturday (Dec. 27, 1997) in his home. He was born March 25, 1930, in Dunkirk, the son of the late George and Mabel Sischo Raner. A Chautauqua County resident his entire life, he was employed as a general laborer for the Growers Co-op in Westfield. He was a self-employed woodcutter and enjoyed mechanical work as a hobby. He was also a former member of the Ellery Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are a daughter, Kimberly Farnsworth of Dewittville; and three grandsons: Gilbert, Daniel and Thomas Farnsworth, all of Dewittville. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel M. Raner, who died March 24, 1987. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Jordan Funeral Home in Sinclairville, with the Rev. Irwin L. Hallett of Kabob Gospel Tabernacle officiating. Burial will be in the Red Bird Cemetery.
Raner, Hazel M. (Raner). b. Feb. 16, 1938 Jamestown, NY. d. Mar. 24, 1987. She shot herself. Body was found in group of trees near her home. d/o Harry & Saddie (Perry) Raner. Hazel was also a foster daughter of Donald B. Dubois. w/o William Raner. PJ: 3/25/1987: Hazel was a 1957 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School. She has sisters: Goldie Johnston of Busti, Mary LeRoy of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Dorothy Morrison of Jamestown; and brothers: Edward Raner and Timothy Miller, both of the U.S. Army; Milton Raner and George Raner, both of Kennedy; and William Raner of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Raner.

He was employed by the Case family (Red Bird Corners) as their farm manager from 1947 to 1953, where he operated their dairy farm on Centralia Road. He later purchased the farm and an additional farm at Red Bird Corners, where he worked until his retirement. He then did various jobs with Clyne Builders of Bradford, Pa. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. He has a brother, Clifford Reardon of Panama. He was preceded in death by six sisters: Bessie Barnhart, Olive Gormley, Belle Farnham, Helen Opalecky, Ruth Lyon and Elsie Edmonds; and two brothers: Clyde and Leon Reardon.

Mrs. Rhinehart was a former employee of the Ideal Peerless and W. C. A. Hospital. She had resided in Jamestown 43 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church and Butts Sunday School of the Church, Golden Age Society Fireside Hobby Club and was a Golden member of Union Grange.

Robinson, Liscomb C. b. Oct. 1, 1824. d. June 30, 1888. Veteran of Civil War - Co. C. 9th N. Y. Cal. Enlisted in the regiment at Poland, NY, on November 9, 1862, to serve nine months. He was 38 years old. Robinson was wounded near Cedar Run, VA on August 22, 1863, and he was mustered out on November 26, 1863, at Culpeper Court House, Va. Robinson was wounded by Mosby’s guerillas in the same action that took Private Asa N. Comstock prisoner. Comstock was assumed to have been murdered and his grave never found.

A Gerry resident the past 38 years, he was born Aug. 5, 1912, in Ellery Center, a son of Frank T. and Belle Pratt Sample. Sample was a 27-year employee of Watson Manufacturing Co., retiring as a foreman in 1972. He was an avid trapper, hunter and beekeeper. Surviving are his wife, the former Evelyn Faulkner, whom he married Jan. 1, 1943 in Bemus Point; two daughters: Lydia B. Lindquist of Sinclairville and Susanne Blair of Clayton, N.C.; two sons: F. Steven Sample of Jamestown and Thomas Sample of Sinclairville; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Mark Sample of Maple Springs, and two sisters: Elsie Peterson of Busti and Mary Stearns of Portland, Ore. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Sample, in 1980. The funeral will be held Sunday in Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. A private burial will be Monday in Red Bird Cemetery, Ellery.

A lifelong area resident, she was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Ellery Center, the daughter of John and Liefy Stowell Persons. Surviving are a son, Henry Seekings of Jamestown, a daughter, Arlene Colburn of Hidden Valley Campgrounds, Kiantone; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucy Sipe of Cortland, NY. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons: Gordon and Maitland Seekings; a daughter, Ruth Snipe; three brothers, Everett, Frank and Shearl Persons and three sisters, Mary Persons Irene Seekings and Edna Brown. PVT John Lee Sharp, 21, son of Sterl U. and Nellie Bennett Sharp of the Centralia-Hartfield Road, was killed Monday evening (Aug. 9, 1965) in a one-car accident near Marlinton, W. Va., according to word received by his brother, Stanford Sharp of the Centralia-Hartfield Road. Private Sharp, who had just completed basic training at Fort Dix, N.J., had spent a leave at home and, with his parents, was visiting his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Rosa Sharp and other relatives of Slaty Ford, W. Va. He was born in Jamestown, Jan. 15, 1944, and was graduated from Cassadaga Valley Central School in 1962. Before entering the service, he was employed at the Ring Punch and Dye Division, Products Machine Co., Jamestown. Besides his parents, brother, and grandmother, he is survived by another brother, Kyle Sharp, at home, and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sophia Bennett, Jamestown. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. Roger B. Smith, pastor of the Centralia Methodist Church, will officiate. SIMMONS
Simmons, Amos. b. 1738 Mass. d. 1825 Town of Ellery. no marker. Age 87. Mr. and Mrs. Amos Simmons were maternal grandparents of William Barrows who built the Red Bird Inn. Amos was a veteran of the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Amos’ wartime service in the Revolutionary War lasted for only 3 months and 21 days, from his enlistment July 11, 1780 at age 42 years until his discharge Oct. 31, 1780. He served as Lieutenant in Capt. George Claghorn’s Com. in Col. Abiel Mitchell’s regiment of Mass. Militia. The regiment was raised in Bristol Co., Mass., to reinforce the Continental Army for three months. Amos and his wife came to Chautauqua County from Massachusetts about 1810 to live with their unmarried, orphan grandson William Barrows, and to maintain his house for him. Wm. Barrows was born in New Bedford, Mass., Jan. 25, 1788. He was left an orphan when quite young, and went to live with his maternal grandfather Amos Simmons. At the age of 22, he came to Chautauqua, called at Maj. Sinclair’s , on Mill Creek for a few weeks; and in the month of Oct. 1809, located on lot 6 in the 3d township, range 12...Barrows was not yet married, and his house was kept in order by his grandmother Simmons, while grandfather Simmons kept and made his garden the pleasure and admiration of all who beheld it. Simmons was a Revolutionary soldier, a carpenter and joiner by trade, and was wont to make the children both laugh and wonder t his marvelous exploits in war; and his work on the tallest steeple in Providence, R. I. Amos Simmons is remembered as a short, trim built man with blue eyes, a pleasant countenance; and the accepted friend of all the children that knew him. His wife died, about 1818, and he, about 1823; and both are buried in the graveyard (on old Barrows farm) with no humble stone or monument to mark their last resting place.

She was a former member of the Centralia Grange, Stockton Rebeckas, Red Bird Cemetery Association and during World war II, she served as an Army aircraft spotter. She also was a 4-H Club leader. Surviving are four daughters: Allene Piazza, Gerry, Anne Nickerson, Falconer, Evelyn Sample, Gerry, and Lois Leslie, Port Richey; one son, Ralph Faulkner, Sinclairville; 20 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great- grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Warren D. Faulkner, whom she married March 22, 1919, and who died June 28, 1967; one daughter, Frances Martin, who died March 23, 1993; one great-grandson, Robert Pierce, who died June 1992; four brothers: Ray, Ralph, Lee and Fay Spooner; and one infant sister. The family lived there until 1920 when it came east and she had since lived in this county. PJ: 12/ /1962: Mrs. Sarah M. Winton, 95, a resident of Towerville for the past 58 years, died Monday afternoon (Dec. 3, 1962). She was born June 11, 1867, in Erie County, Pa., the daughter of Edward and Jane Porter Sturdevant. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer E. Winton, who died Dec. 11, 1940. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Lena Perry, Sinclairville; two sons, Floyd E. Winton, with whom she resided, and Lloyd E. Winton, Ellery; 10 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Jordan Funeral Home, Sinclairville. The Rev. Mary Hale of the South Stockton Church of God will officiate. Burial will be in Red Bird Cemetery.
