He was born on June 21, 1938, in Van Kirk Station, Pa., a son of the late Charles R. and Theresa ‘‘Ressie’’ Shrader Bane. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor P. Utegg Batts Bane, whom he married on Jan. 26, 1991; two sons: John Bane Jr. of Wimauma, Fla., and Michael Bane of Tampa; five daughters: Kim Bane of Sherman, Crystle Christopher and Carolyn Reynolds, both of Dunkirk, Brenda Ardillo and ** Johnette Bane, both of Fredonia; and a stepson, Tim Batts of Ripley; four stepdaughters: Muriel Redick of Bear Lake, Pa., Lorie Nellis of Ripley, Lou Ann Batts of Pittsboro, N.C., and Valerie Hayes of North East; 17 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two brothers: Robert Bane of Westfield and George Bane of Jamestown; six sisters: Margaret Lindstrom and Betty Jones, both of Brocton, Ruth Hayner and Freda Tilly, both of Fredonia, Bertha ‘‘Bert’’ Nolan of Cassadaga and Sarah Deyell of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Charles, Donald, Fred and Raymond Bane; and two sisters: Katie Bane and Edna Mae Marello.

BANE, Johnette May Bane, 40, of Porter Road, died Monday (Nov. 25, 2002) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, following a lengthy illness. She was born in Westfield, the daughter of the Carol Bane and the late John Bane. Besides her mother Fredonia, she is survived by her stepfather, Buster Burns of Fredonia; two sons: Eddie and Nathan Kaus, both of Dunkirk; four sisters: Kim Bane of Sherman, Crystal Christopher of Dunkirk, Brenda Ardillo of Fredonia and her twin sister, Carolyn Reynolds of Dunkirk; three brothers: John Bane Jr. and Michael Bane, both of Florida, and Derrick Burns of Brocton.

BARKER, Barzilla (57) Was the son of Hezekiah and Sarah Barker and b. at Newport, R. I. Aug. 20th 1784. In 1800 the family settled in Paris, Oneida county and in 1806 removed to Canadaway. Then five dwellings contained the entire population of the present town of Pomfret. Mr. B’s father opened the first tavern in the place. The whole tract where the village now stands was an entire wilderness. Mr. B. m. Mary MARSH in 1808. Mrs. B. came with her family to Canadaway the same year, 1805. In the fall of 1815 Mr. B. came to P. and settled on pt. of lots 5 and 6, T. 5, purchasing of Roe Goldsmith. The improvements were a slashing of five acres and a log house. The first settlement east was on the farm of Henry Bradley at Milford, and the first west was at Brocton. Mr. B. built the third frame barn on the Main road. He built a small frame house now occupied by his son Corington. Mr. B. was a Baptist in sentiment; politically a Whig, and in after life a Republican. He d. Aug. 17th 1859. Mrs. B. d. June 7th, 1855. They were bu. in Brocton (Portland Evergreen) Cemetery. (Portland Sketches) children,

BARNES, Calvin (30) Was the son of Comfort Barnes and Hannah Cook his wife, and was born Nov. 7th, 1766 at Weston, Mass. He came from Norway, Herkimer county, N.Y. to P/ in Apr. 1811, and purchased a claim to E. pt. lot 33, T. 5; cleared a few acres of land, planted it to corn, and built a log house, and removed his family in Sept. following. Mrs. B. was born in Voluntown, Conn., March 3d, 1772. They occupied their log house until 1824, when the frame house now on the farm and occupied by J. S. West , was built. Mr. B. was the first postmaster appointed in town, and held the office until it was discontinued in 1829. He was in the war of 1812, and was wounded at the battle of Black Rock, a ball passing through the knee joint, rendering him a cripple for life. He was an antislavery man, but acted with the Whig party. He was not a religious man. He was universally respected.

Was born at Watertown CT Dec 4, 1763. He died in the town of Portland, in 1854, and his grave is in lot 55 of this Portland Evergreen Cemetery. He served 3 enlistments in the CT militia, beginning in 1780 in Plymouth CT, in Col. Porter’s regiment, His second enlistment was served in Captain Mansfield’s company and his third in Capt. Asahel Hodge’s co of Col. Isaac Sherman’s regiment in 1782. He married to Lucina KING in 1783 . They lived in Vermont until 1809 when he lost his farm because of a defective title. They came to Portland in the spring of 1810 and he articled on March 29, 1810 all lots 4 and 3 and part of lot 3 Twp 5, In 1811 he opened a tavern which he operated til after the War of 1812, Over the years , he sold off his land to incoming settlers, and in 1832 or 1833 sold his homestead on which he had erected a frame house in 1830. Misfortune and hard times appear to have befallen him from this time forward for he was dependent on public charity until his death. His one daughter Fanny , born in Vermont, the wife of Samuel PERRY, died Feb 14, 1822 and his wife had died several years before his death;

She was born in Jamestown on Dec. 16, 1916, the daughter of the late Sydney and Bessie Gardner Benson. She was a 1934 graduate of the Jamestown School system. She had been a resident of Fredonia for the past 12 years.She is survived by six sons, Gerald S. Barnes of Dunkirk, John L. Barnes of Titusville, Fla., Robert L. Barnes of Huntsville, Ala., Daniel W. Barnes of Fairport, Jay S. Barnes of Chicago, Ill. and Jefferson T. Barnes of Fredonia; one daughter, Betty Barnes of Fredonia; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Barnes, whom she married in 1937 and preceded her in death in 1968; and two sisters, Janet Cuoco and Lourene Wheelock.

Born at Heilwood, Pa., he was the son of the late Eugene and Maria (Poncette) Bellando.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and belonged to the John W. Dill American Legion Post 434 of Brocton. He also was an exempt volunteer fireman of the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are two sons, Edward Bellando of Coldwater, Ohio, and Portland; Michael ''Buzz'' Bellando one brother, Robert Bellando of Brocton; two sisters, Mary Presto and Elizabeth Marx of Brocton; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Parisio) Bellando, whom he married June 15, 1946 and who died in 1996; and two sisters, Thelma Parisio and Mae Bellando.

A lifelong resident of Portland, Chautauqua CO NY, was born in 1843 in Stockholm Sweden, and emigrated with his parents to this country when he was about 4 years old. When a small boy, he was adopted by Asa BLOOD of Portland, and through his natural ability acquired a superior education for those times. Early in life he became a teacher, and taught in Portland and for a short time in Illinois, During his sojurn in Illinois, he was united in marriage with Miss Hattie LaDUE, the dau of U.S. LaDUE of Portland NY. In 1862 he enlisted in Co G of the 112th NY and served his country until he was mustered out in 1865. Returning to the village of Brocton, he was associated in business with US LaDUE, in buying cattle and livestock. He afterward went into the mercantile business and while pursuing this occupation, was appointed postmaster.. In 1891 he was elected Supervisor of the town of Portland.
The last 15 years of his life were quiet because of physical infirmity, He departed this life, January 26th, 1926 at his residence in the village of Brocton.

Harold L. Bloss, 72, of East Main Street, died Tuesday (May 8, 2001) in his home. He was born July 13, 1927, in North East, Pa., the son of Roy and Maude Hellyer Bloss. A Brocton area resident most of his life, he was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, and had been a member of the National Guard for many years. He is survived by his wife, Grace Brown Bloss, whom he married April 14, 1953; four sons: Roger Bloss of Dayton, N.Y., William, Donald and Frederick Bloss, all of Brocton; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two sisters: Meredyth Meadows of Westfield and Marvelyn Courtney of Sherman. He was preceded in death by a brother, Harlan Bloss, who died in 1987. Interment will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

She was born March 17, 1936, in Dewittville, the daughter of the late Fred and Grace Osborne Brown.She is survived by four sons: Roger Bloss of Dayton and William, Donald and Roger Bloss, all of Brocton; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Fred Brown of Brocton; two stepbrothers: Lawrence Kingsley of Dunkirk and Richard Kingsley of Fredonia; a half-brother, David Kingsley of Brockton, Mass.; three sisters: Margaret Panek of Dunkirk, Patricia Brown of Worcester, Mass., and Doris Rhodes of Waltham, Mass.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Bloss, whom she married in 1953 and who died in 2001; and her stepfather, George Kingsley.

* Frank J. ''Bomber'' Bomasuto, 80, of Spencerport Road, formerly of Brocton, Dunkirk, Rochester and Lakeland, Fla., died Saturday (Sept. 7, 2002) in Park Ridge Hospital in Rochester. He was born April 15, 1922, in Dunkirk, the son of Angelo and Josephine Tabone Bomasuto. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Ranger as a signalman. He was a former trustee of the village of Brocton and served four terms as mayor of Brocton. He was a former constable of the town of Portland, a special deputy of the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department, in charge of security at Van Buren Point in Portland and a hunting safety teacher for the state Department of Environmental Conservation in the Brocton area. He was also an exempt member of the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department.He is survived by his wife, Rose D. Maioranna Bomasuto, whom he married July 27, 1946; four daughters: Darlene Markham of Rochester, Kate McIntee of Webster, Marlene Orr of Fredonia and Jacqueline Gregory of Kendall, N.Y.; four grandchildren: two brothers: Michael Bomasuto of Silver Creek and Angelo Bomasuto of Dunkirk; and a sister, Josephine Woloszyn. He was preceded in death by two sisters: Margaret Leone and Frances Mancuso; and a brother, Vincent Bomasuto.

BRAINARD, Cephas (44) Was the son of Samuel, and b. in Conn. Jan. 24, 1788. He removed to Herkimer county, N.Y., when a boy.
He m. Polly Crosby March 10, 1808. Mrs. B. was b. Nov. 22, 1789, and was sister of Luther Crosby, an early settler in P.(Mr. B.) emigrated to P. in the fall of 1814; settled on the N. pt. of lot 29, T. 5, farm now owned and occupied by A. T. Mead .
Upon this purchase he built a log house which was occupied by the family the following winter. In 1825 or ’26 he purchased a piece of land of James Dunn on the opposite side of the road and erected the house now on the farm occupied by Mr. Mead. Mr. B. was a farmer and in after years a cattle dealer, driving to the Buffalo or Toronto markets; probably the first dealer of that class of any note in town. In 1836 he removed to Arkwright, in this county; in 1852 to McKean, Erie county, Pa. and in 1865 to DeKalb Co., Ill., where he died July 9, 1868. Mrs. B. d. Feb 1, 1868.
Mr. B. was a Universalist; politically a whig, American and through the war of 1812 a democrat. (*they are NOT BURIED in Portland Evergreen Cemetery as far as I can find )

farm, then later, they lived on farms growing grapes, cherries, peaches,
and apples. He always farmed with two horses named Dan and Fan, and it
was not until 1954 that he got his first tractor. He continued farming
until shortly before his death at the age of 91.

Burgess of Fort Plain, Steve W. Burgess of Westfield, Scott A. Burgess of Rock Hill, S.C. and Duane T. Burgess and Darren W. Burgess, both of Brocton; one brother, Clare Perryman of Fredonia; one sister, Marion Hallmark of Dora, Ala.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Sunny Perryman; and three sisters, Ruth Gale, Ardy's Bundy and Dorothy Lanski

She was born July 6, 1929 in Garfield, N.J., the daughter of the late John and Barbara Pastor. A 10-year resident of Arkwright, Mrs. Byczek previously lived in Brocton.
Surviving are one daughter, Jane Palmer of Arkwright; one son, Theodore Byczek of Jamestown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Theodore J. Byczek, whom she married May 29, 1946 and preceded her in death on April 25, 1981; one brother, Michael Pastor; and four sisters, Mary, Rose, Claire and Margaret Pastor.
