THE COE FAMILY IN NEW ENGLAND AND CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, NEW YORK By Frank Samuel Coe, 1932 Updated in 1989 and 2003 by His granddaughter Martha Coe Friddle ROBERT COE 9 (1596 - ) (Son of Henry Coe) Born at Thorpe Morieux, Suffolk, baptized there on October 26, 1596. He was next found in records at Boxford, Suffolk, where on April 18, 1625 he was chosen overseer of cloth, and in 1629 was elected Questman. Robert Coe married first in about 1623 Marie __________by whom he had four children. Her burial is recorded Marie Coe, the wife of Robert Coe, the 27th of October 1628. He married second Hanna Dearsley, as appears from the registers of Assington: Robert Coe and Hanna Dearsley, April 29, 1630 Children by the first marriage, all of whom were baptized at Boxford: 1. John Baptized 20th August 1625 2. Robert Born Sept 1626, died Sept. 1629. Baptized on Sept. 19, 1626 3. 3. Mary Born September 1626 (twin), the daughter of Robert Coe and Marie Coe was baptized September 19, 1626. 4. Benjamin Born 1628. Benjammin Coe, the son of Robert and Marie Coe his wife, was baptized October 16, 1628. This is the sole record of the name Benjamin that our records have disclosed in England at any place or time, except on the shipping list hereafter given. After 1630 Robert Coe and his family totally disappear from the records in Boxford and all of the neighboring parishes. The progenitor in New England of most of the Coes in America was born at Thorpe Morieux, a mall rural parish in Suffolk Co, England, and was baptized there on October 26, 1596 as recorded in the old parish register still preserved. Henry Coe was a substantial yeoman, probably a cloth maker, and a man of character and standing in the community, holding for several years the honorable position at Thorpe Morieux of Warden. Little is known of his early life, but without he remained in his native parish until after 1610, when he appears in 1625 in Boxford, Suffolk, about eight miles from Thorpe Morieux. He lived in Boxford until his removal to New England in 1624 His education was superior to that of the majority in his standing in life at that time, and perhaps at some time he may have attended the Boxford Grammar School, founded by Queen Elizabeth in 1596 Religious conditions and environment were the principal factors in determining for Robert Coe a different career from the lives of his ancestors: During his early manhood Puritanism, which had been growing in England for a generation, became paramount in Essex and Suffolk counties, which resulted in the great Puritan emigration to New England in 1630, under the leadership of Govenor John Winthrop of Groton, Suffolk In the spring of 1634 Robert Coe took his family to the town of Ipswich, the port of Suffolk Co., and about 15 miles east of Boxford, and there on April 30 they were among the eighty three passengers who embarked for New England on the ship 'Francis', commanded by Captain John Cutting. At the record office in London is still preserved the roll of the ships' passengers, taken at the custom house in Ipswich, on which appears the names of Robert Cooe, aged 38, Anna Cooe his wife, aged 43, and their children John Cooe, aged 8, Robert Cooe aged 7, and Benjamin Cooe aged 5 years. (See Hottens list (original) of early emigrants to America.) In those days a voyage to America took about ten weeks, so in all probability Robert Coe arrived in Boston in July 1634, and he immediately went to Watertown, a suburb of Boston, where he found many settlers who came over with Gov. John Winthrop in 1630 from the same vicinity in England. The first mention of his name in New England is his admission to the church as a freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony on September 3, 1634. His previous admission to the church was requisite to be a freeman; that is, a citizen entitled to vote and hold office in public affairs. His residence at Watertown lasted less than one year, as the town became overcrowded by the influx of new settlers, so in June 1635 Robert Coe joined with a few others in the starting of a new plantation at Wethersfield, Connecticut, in the fertile Connecticut River Valley. He was dismissed from the church at Watertown May 20, 1635. Robert and his family next resided at Wethersfield about five years. His house stood on a three acre home lot, situated on what is now the northwest corner of East Main and Broad Streets, besides this house he also owned several other parcels of land in Wethersfield, amounting to twelve acres of meadow, thirteen acres of swamp, over a hundred acres of upland, as recorded April 28, 1641. These lands he sold to James Botsey, who had them recorded on May 11, 1644. On May 4, 1641 Robert Coe recorded a tract of land of nine hundred acres, which he had bought of Matthew Mitchell, bounded west on the Connecticut River, south on Sturgeon River (now Roaring Brook), and extending easterly up same, and north on land of Mr. Chaplin. This great tract was situated in the present Town of Glastonbury. He sold to Robert Rose, who had them recorded November 4, 1643 Due to a disagreement which arose in the church in November 1640, Robert Coe and his adherents purchased for a new plantation lands at Stamford Connecticut, and removed there. The settlement at Stamford took place in the early spring of 1641, and Robert Coe was granted a house lot of fourteen acres, only two of the company having a larger amount (see history of Stamford). However, his residence at Stamford was destined to be of brief duration, with the growth of the town from new settlers and the attempts by the Government at New Haven to regulate its affairs. In a short time a difficulty arose in the Stamford church similar to that which caused the withdrawal from the Wethersfield church, and the faction led by the Rev. Richard Denton, and Robert Coe, despairing of success, crossed Long Island Sound in 1644, where a settlement was then established at what is now called Hempstead. A church was then established there and immediately Robert Coe is said to have been chosen elder. Here be remained for eight years, and was the leading man of the town and magistrate under the Dutch Government. But the energetic, enterprising spirit of Robert Coe craved further activity, and in the pring of 1652 he was the leader in the formation of another settlement a few miles further west on Long Island at a pla Here a church was organized, of which the Reverend John Moore was the pastor, and Robert Coe elder. The new settlement was at first called Middleburg, and a few months later in 1664 it was known as Hastings, but in 1665 it was permanently named New Town. Robert Coe remained at New Town for four years, being the most prominent man in the town. In 1653 he went to Boston as the deputy of the town to invoke the protection of the Massachusetts Bay Colony against the Indians, who were threatening the town, and the attack of English settlers on Long Island. In 1665 Robert Coe made over his interest to his eldest son John Coe, and in the spring of that year was the leader again of another new settlement. He and his youngest son Benjamin Coe and several others, purchased from the Indians a large tract of land south of New Town and moved there, founding Jamaica. (In the Dutch records this was called Rustdorp.) On November 20, 1660 when 64 years of age Robert Coe disposed of certain boundaries in Hempstead, and in a petition to the Dutch government dated May 9, 1661 Robert Coe refers to Richard Crabbe as his brother-in-law. In 1658 Robert Coe was appointed by the Dutch government as a magistrate, which he held to 1664. At the age of 75 year he retired from public life. Robert Coe's first wife Marie, who was the mother of all his children is buried in England. Her burial is recorded Marie Coe, wife of Robert Coe, October 27, 1628. Recorded in the registers at Assington, Suffolk, on April 29, 1630 is his subsequent marriage to Hanna Dearsley. She came to New England with her husband, but the time of her death is unknown. He married the third time Jane Rose or Rause, license dated February 15, 1674-75 in the registers at Assington, Suffolk. She being the widow of Edward Rause, who died 2 1/2 years before. She had been married at an earlier date to John Smith of Taunton, MA, who , who was killed in 1643 by the Indians in a raid which destroyed the settlement of Mespat on Long Island. ce called Mespat, which had previously been settled in 1642, but had been destroyed by Indians in a raid the following year after the first settlement, and had been abandoned. lat settlement. dated Children of Robert and Marie Coe. ROBERT COE 10 (1626 - 1659) (Son of Robert Coe) Born at Boxford England in Suffolk September 1626, and was baptized there September 19, 1626. He was brought to New England in the spring of 1634 when seven years of age and taken in successive moves to Watertown, Massachusetts, Wethersfield, Connecticut, and later to Stamford, Connecticut. His father and brothers later removed to Long Island in 1644,but he remained permanently in Connecticut. About 1650 he married Hanna Mitchell, whose records show that she was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, England in 1635. The records show that in 1650 Robert Coe purchased a homestead of the widow Ramble in Stratford, Connecticut. This being taken from an old deed of 1652. The lands of Robert Coe purchased by him of the Widow Ramble were: one house lot, three acres and a quarter more or less, butting east upon the and bounded with Samuel Sherman's on the north, Thomas Ufford on the south, highway, and bounded with Samuel Sherman's on the north, Thomas Ufford on the south, and west upon the swamp. The house lot was located on what is now known as the west side of lower Main street, between South Ave., and Birdsley Streets. Besides this home lot, he also owned forty-seven acres of land elsewhere in Stratford. Robert Coe died intestate about September 1659 and was buried at Stratford on October 20, 1659. His widow presented an inventory of L 179-16-0. The court ordered the estate to be devided among the widow, son John aged one and one half years, daughter Suzanna, aged six and one-half years, and daughter Sarah, aged three and one-half years. Son John to have his portion at twenty one, and the daughters theirs at eighteen or at marriage. The descendants of Robert Coe were prolific and vigorous, and for a century they lived in Connecticut. About 1756, some of the descendants settled in western Masachusetts, and after the Revolution other branches were etablished. Most of the descendants have been Congregationalists, and several members have been ministers of that church. Children born to Robert and Hanna (Mitchell) Coe 1. Hannah Born December 14, 1651. In the year 1815 he removed to Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., NY as one of the early settlers in that part of New York State. In those days many of the early settlers coming to that area were engaged in the lumber business, and this also was the occupation of Cyrus Coe. Later, he turned to farming and so continued until his death in Ellicott on April 17, 1853. He and Elsie are buried in Allen Cemetery, Poland, NY, as is Elsie's father Nathaniel Fenton. He married in 1810 Elsie Fenton of Burlington, born on June 29, 1793, she was the daughter of Colonel Nathaniel and Rachel Fenton. She died on May 21, 1842. The writer of this genealogy (Frank S. Coe) found records that show that Nathaniel and Rachel (Fletcher) Fenton were married in the First Congregational Church at Mansfield, CT., on Sept. 18, 1783, and two of their children; Orilla and Richard, were born there also, but as the census of 1790 shows Nathaniel Fenton as the head of a family at Burlington, Otsego Co, it is also likely that Elsie Fenton, the wife of Cyrus Coe, was born at the latter place also. It is also probable that Cyrus Coe and Nathaniel came to Ellicott, Chautauqua Co., at or near the same time. Nathaniel Fenton was a soldier in the Revolution, and saw service in the Connecticut Militia, as did Zechariah, the father of Cyrus Coe. He was granted a pension in 1833 at Jamestown, New York. The following information came from Betty Kreig of MO, a Coe cousin: Cyrus married Elsie Fenton of Burlington in 1810. She was the daughter of Col. Nathaniel and Rachel Fletcher Fenton. Records show that Nathaniel and Rachel Fletcher were married in the First Congregational Church at Mansfield, Connecticut on September 18, 1783, and two of their children, Orilla and Richard, were born there. Since the 1790 census of Burlington, Otsego County, New York shows Nathaniel Fenton as the head of a family, it is also likely that Elsie Fenton, the wife of Cyrus Coe, was born at the later place also. It is also probable that Cyrus Coe and Nathaniel Fenton came to Ellicott at or near the same time. Nathaniel Fenton was a soldier in the Revolution and saw service in the Connecticut Militia, as did also the father of Cyrus Coe. He was granted a pension in 1833 at Jamestown, New York. In 1832 the town of Poland, New York was created by the legislature from Ellicott. The first town meeting was held on March 5, 1833. Nathan Fenton was supervisor, and Cyrus Coe was Overseer of the Poor. Cyrus and Elsie Fenton Coe and her parents, Nathaniel and Rachel Fletcher Fenton are buried in the Allen Cemetery, in Poland, New York. Children born to Cyrus and Elsie (Fenton) Coe: 1. Later that same year, his occupation as an Engineer caused him to move again to Providence, RI. Frank S. Coe remained in Providence for about two years, and then relocated to Boston, MA, in which vicinity he lived for the next 13 years, living at Cambridge, then at Watertown. In July of 1926 he moved to Springfield, MA, and in 1932 was living with his wife and son at 117 Olmstead Drive. It was while living at Springfield that Frank became interested in the Coe genealogy. As all of the previous publications were of dates not later than 1911, and his particular branch included only the 8th American generation (Miles, his grandfather), Frank took it upon himself to compile the complete genealogy of his branch of the Coe family. This document is the result of his efforts. The eldest of Samuels' five children, a heavy burden fell on Frank when he was orphaned at twelve years of age. His education was cut short, but like his forefathers, Frank was a man of intelligence and energy. He was employed by the American Bosch Company for several years, holding a patent on a valve for a jet engine (then a Top Secret project for the U.S. Government, at the height of World War II). A scale model of this valve is in the possession of his great grandson, Robert Sean Marra. Frank also held other patents as well. Frank did the original research for this genealogy. What he lacked in formal education, he more than made up for in intelligence, foresight and energy. He retired to North Miami, Florida, in the early 1950s, and died there in September of 1967. In 1963 they celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary in Miami. Lillian died in 1973 at the home of their son, Gerald Frank Coe, in Greensboro, NC. Both are buried in Miami, Florida. They resided at Shaker Pines Lake, Hazardville, CT (now Enfield) until 1966, when Gilbarco relocated and transfered them to Greensboro, North Carolina. Gerald was a lifelong sportsman, and like his ancestors was a man of energy and spirit. He once crossed the flood-swollen Connecticut River in a rowboat, dodging debris, to check the flooded premises of Gilbarco when it was located in West Springfield, MA. He passed his zest for life on to his children and grandchildren. He died while on vacation at Myrtle Beach, SC on May 26, 1984, and is buried at Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro, North Carolina.
