JOSHUA11 FAIRBANK (LUTHER10,
JOSHUA9, JABEZ8,
JONAS7, JONATHAN6
FAIREBANKE, GEORGE5, GEORGE4,
GILBERT3, JOHN2,
WILLIAM1) was born January 30,
1793 in Royalton, Windsor, Vermont1,2, and died
January 6, 1882 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York.3.
He married LUCY DAIN4 July 24, 1814 in
Stockbridge, Windsor, Vermont5,6, daughter of LEMUEL
DAIN and ABIAH HARRIS. She was born April 19, 1791 in
Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut7, and died
September 12, 1868 in Ellington, Chautauqua, New York.7.
Notes
for JOSHUA FAIRBANK:
From:
"The Fairbanks Family in America" by Lorenzo S.
Fairbanks: In 1820 he went to Painesville, Geauga, Ohio,
but returned the next year to Vermont. In April 1833, with
his wife and eight children, he started to remove to New York
state. They had two yokes of oxen, two pairs of horses, and
a complete emigrant outfit. They were 19 days in reaching
Pike, Wyoming County, New York, where they remained until autumn,
and then continued their journey to Kennedy, Chautauqua County.
There he engaged in the lumber business, but afterwards bought a
farm in Ellington, and resided there until his death. (Note:
Pike, New York, was in Allegany County in 1833.)
The
above mentioned book also states that Joshua was born in Barnard,
Windsor, Vermont. Luther, his father, was living in
Royalton, Windsor, Vermont for the 1790 census and Barnard for
the 1800 census. The "History of Barnard," by
William Monroe Newton, states that Joshua was born in Barnard and
the "History of Royalton," by Evelyn M. Wood Lovejoy,
states he was probably born in Royalton. The town clerks
for both locations do not have a record of his birth.

Notes
for LUCY DAIN:
"The
Fairbanks Family in America," by Lorenzo S. Fairbanks states
that Lucy's maiden name was Davis and her parents were Lemuel
Davis and Lucy Harris. The town records of Stockbridge,
Windsor, Vermont, show that Lucy's maiden name was Dean. There
were only two Dean/Dain families living in Stockbridge in 1814
when Lucy and Joshua married: Lemuel and his brother, Oxenbridge.
Oxenbridge was probably too young to have been her father and did
not marry until 1799. Lemuel Dain's marriage record from
Windham, Windham, Connecticut, shows that he married Abiah Harris
and not Lucy Harris. Lucy's son, Stillman's death
certificate from Amador County, California, states that his
mother's maiden name was Dane.
Her
tombstone states that she was born in Mansfield, Connecticut.
Baptismal records have not been found for her and the Mansfield
town records do not show her birth.

Jamestown
Journal, page 3, March 24, 1841: "Drowned, in
Kennedyville, on Saturday last, Mr. Joshua A. Fairbank, aged 25."
"The
Fairbanks Family in America," by Lorenzo S. Fairbanks
indicates that Joshua was born in Barnard. When his
parents, Joshua and Lucy, married, Joshua, his father, was living
in Pittsfield. When Joshua, his father, along with
James Dean (who was probably the brother of Joshua's wife, Lucy)
bought land in Pittsfield on October 1, 1814, the deed said that
Joshua was of Pittsfield, subsequent deeds say that Joshua was of
Pittsfield.

From
the "Cuba True Patriot," Volume V, Friday, April 5,
1867, Received From New York State Library: FATAL ACCIDENT - On
Saturday afternoon last a man by the name of Fairbanks, who
resided in the town of Ellington, Chautauqua county, was killed
at North Cuba, two miles from this village, under the most
distressing circumstances. Mr. Fairbanks was on a visit to
some of his relatives, residing in the town of Lyndon, and
together with them came down to this village Saturday forenoon.
Starting for home, riding on a "buck-board," just above
the Reservoir House, their horse suddenly started up, throwing
Fairbanks and two of his friends to the ground. Mr. F.
struck upon his head, and it is thought the other must have fell
upon him, as the unfortunately man's neck was broken, and he died
almost immediately.

Notes
for LUCY AMORETTE FAIRBANK:
Regarding
Lucy's birthplace: The 1850 census states Vermont,
the 1855 census states Utica (probably Utica, New York - there is
no Utica in Ohio), the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses state New
York. The family is found in the 1820 census for LeRoy,
Geagua, Ohio. I believe she may have told the census taker
she was born in Utica, not knowing what county it was in.
